Chapter 1 of My Mate Rejected Me and Locked Me Underground

The bond went cold at the exact moment Maddox opened his mouth.

I felt it before he spoke a single word—a drop in temperature along my sternum, like a window left open in December. I was standing in a plain gray dress, no Luna gown, no ceremonial fur, because I had asked for none of it. I told myself it didn't matter. The mark would come regardless. Three years of scrubbing floors and eating last had taught me patience, and patience was supposed to end tonight.

Maddox stepped toward me. The whole clearing held its breath with him.

Then he turned. Not toward me—toward the pack.

"I, Maddox Brooks, Alpha of Ironveil Pack, reject you, Florence Morgan, as my mate and Luna."

The words hit my chest like a blade drawn straight up through the bone. My knees hit the dirt before I understood I was falling. The bond didn't fray—it detonated, one clean rupture, and then a second wave crashing in behind it, hollowing out everything the first wave left standing. I couldn't see. I could only hear my own breath tearing in and out of my throat, and beneath it, very faint, a low growl that wasn't mine and was mine, curling awake somewhere behind my ribs.

I didn't beg. I didn't reach for him. I knelt in the dirt with my hands flat against the cold ground and I made myself breathe, because breathing was the only thing left that I could control.

Then he turned to Lilith.

She stood on the platform in full Luna white, and when his teeth sank into her throat the pack erupted—gasps, low murmurs, someone's mate crying out in shock. Around her neck, catching the torchlight, hung the moonstone pendant. The one he'd carved three blizzards into earning. He'd given it to her.

I watched that stone glint against her collarbone and felt the bond's ghost shudder through me a second time, tearing the first wound wider instead of closing it.

"Omega rank," Maddox said, not looking at me. "Basement confinement, effective tonight."

Zora had my arm before I finished exhaling. She and another of Lilith's girls hauled me upright and dragged me through a pack that parted like water, no one meeting my eyes.

The basement was stone and windowless—a cot, a bucket, silence. Before dawn, Zora returned with a bucket of silver-laced water and a brush. "Floors need doing before ranked wolves wake," she said, bright as a bell.

The water touched my palms and blistered them instantly. I scrubbed anyway. I ate last, kneeling. I spoke only when spoken to. Each time the burn threatened to crack my composure, I pressed two fingers to the inside of my wrist, where the bond used to beat, and held still until it passed.

On the third morning, scrubbing the training yard stones, something else moved.

Not pain. A vibration, low and continuous, against my ribs—my wolf, awake, furious, patient no longer. She surged once, hard, demanding, and I shoved her back down with the same discipline that had kept her buried three years. She didn't go quiet again. She crouched inside me instead, waiting. I understood the difference between a wolf that has given up and one that is counting the minutes. I rose and kept scrubbing.

That evening, between dinner cleanup and lockdown, I slipped into the records room. The little camera I'd sewn into my apron lining had waited two months for this. I found the ledger, flipped to the procurement pages, and photographed Lilith's signature beside a Silvercrest supplier's name—wolfsbane, concentrated, logged under "pest management," dated against three weeks of nights I remembered as the worst of my dizziness, the worst of my hands shaking over the scrub brush.

I didn't know yet what it meant. I knew only that a Luna hiding wolfsbane under a false label was a debt someone would eventually have to answer for.

I locked the room behind me and started back toward the basement, my face arranged in its usual nothing.

Voices came from the kitchen passage before I reached the stairs. Lilith's, low and pleased, and Zora's answering laugh.

"Tomorrow," Lilith was saying. "Have the water pitcher sent down to her early. I want it done before Maddox is awake to ask questions."

I stopped in the shadow of the doorway, one hand still curled around the camera in my apron, and listened to her footsteps move away toward the stairs.
