Chapter 1 of My Lover Gave My Heirloom to His Mistress

I packed the short ribs at six-thirty. They were still warm in the thermal bag when I slid into the cab, the smell of red wine and rosemary filling the backseat. My grandmother's recipe. I'd made it from memory because Roman mentioned last week that he missed home-cooked food. He'd been pulling doubles at Mount Sinai for two months straight. I wanted to do something nice.

The cab dropped me at the East Side entrance. I signed in at the desk, took the elevator to the fourth floor, and walked down the corridor toward the surgical department. The fluorescent lights made everything look pale and flat. I could hear voices around the corner. A nurse laughed. Someone's pager went off.

I turned the corner and she was there.

Nataly Rice. Head nurse. I'd met her twice before at hospital events. She always smiled with her mouth closed. She was standing in the middle of the hallway now, arms crossed, like she'd been waiting.

"Oaklynn," she said. Her voice was light. Almost friendly. "What are you doing here?"

I lifted the thermal bag. "Bringing dinner for Roman."

She tilted her head. "He didn't mention you were coming."

"It's a surprise."

"Mm." She stepped closer. "You know, you really should call ahead."

I started to move past her. She shifted. Just slightly. Her shoulder hit the thermal bag hard enough that I lost my grip. The containers hit the tile floor. The lids popped off. Hot soup splashed up my wrist and across my shoes. The burn was immediate. Sharp and wet.

I sucked in a breath and pulled my hand back. The skin was already red.

Nataly looked down at the mess. Then up at me. She didn't apologize. She smiled.

"You should really call ahead," she said again, slower this time, "before playing housewife for someone else's man."

My throat closed. I stared at her. She stared back.

Then I saw it.

The bracelet.

Vintage Cartier. Delicate gold links. The engraved crest facing outward on her wrist. The monogrammed G with the fleur-de-lis. My grandmother's bracelet. The one I'd kept in the velvet box on my dresser. The one I'd noticed missing two weeks ago. The one I told myself I'd misplaced.

Nataly followed my gaze. She lifted her wrist and turned it slowly, deliberately, so the light caught the engraving.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" she said. "A gift from my future husband. He's very generous."

The hallway went quiet. I could hear my own heartbeat in my ears. I couldn't move. I couldn't speak. I just stood there with soup burning my wrist and my grandmother's bracelet on another woman's arm.

Footsteps. Fast. Roman came around the corner, white coat open, stethoscope around his neck. Someone must have paged him. He stopped when he saw us. His eyes went to the spilled food. Then to me. Then to Nataly.

He made his choice in three seconds.

He stepped to Nataly's side. Put his hand on her lower back. Looked at me like I was a problem he'd been avoiding.

"I don't know why you keep showing up here," he said. His voice was loud. Loud enough that the nurses down the hall turned to look. Loud enough that a resident paused mid-step. "You've been riding my coattails for three years. You're embarrassing yourself."

I opened my mouth. Nothing came out.

He kept going. "Go home, Oaklynn. Gold diggers don't get to make scenes in my hospital."

The words hit like a slap. I felt my face go hot. My hands started shaking. Someone behind me whispered something I couldn't hear. Someone else pulled out their phone.

I looked at Roman. At the man I'd loved for three years. The man I'd given everything to. The man I'd hidden my entire identity for because I wanted him to love me for me.

He looked back at me like I was nothing.

Then someone stepped forward.

A man. Tall. Dark hair. White coat. I didn't know his name. He moved through the small crowd that had gathered and stopped in front of me. He pulled a folded napkin from his coat pocket and held it out.

"For your wrist," he said quietly.

I took it. My hands were still shaking. He handed me a paper cup of water from the nearby station. Then he pulled a pen from his pocket, wrote something on a scrap of paper, and pressed it into my palm.

"Patient advocate," he said. "You don't deserve any of this."

I looked up at him. His eyes were steady. Kind. He didn't smile. He didn't perform. He just stood there like decency was the easiest thing in the world.

I looked back at Roman. At Nataly. At the bracelet.

Then I turned and walked out.

I didn't say a word. I didn't cry. I just walked down the corridor, past the nurses, past the residents, past the front desk, and out into the cold November air.

The napkin was still pressed against my wrist. The paper with the advocate's name was folded in my hand.

I got into a cab and told the driver to take me home.

And somewhere between the hospital and my apartment, something inside me went very, very still.

Then it turned to steel.
