Though they vow to keep things strictly platonic during their divorces, their spiteful exes accuse them of the same betrayal. Chapter 1 of My Husband Wanted My Best Friend, So I Chose Hers

"Move your bag, Paige."

I stood at the head of the dining table, the heavy ceramic dish of baked lasagna burning through my oven mitts. My usual seat—the chair I had occupied every Sunday for seven years—was currently claimed by a silver beaded clutch.

Scott didn't even look up from his phone. "Just sit with the kids, Hannah. Don't make a meal so formal."

My jaw tightened. Eight place settings lined the mahogany wood. Two bottles of Cabernet breathed near the centerpiece. Paige had already selected the crystal stems, arranging them with a practiced flick of her wrist, acting entirely like the hostess of my house.

"It's not about formality," I said, setting the scorching dish onto a cork trivet. My shoulders ached from a twelve-hour commercial shoot for a luxury watch brand, the heavy camera rig leaving a dull throb in my neck. "It's my chair."

Paige slid the bag off the upholstery, offering a tight, apologetic smile. "Sorry, Hannah. I was just helping Scott pour."

I took my seat. Scott leaned back, swirling his dark wine. "You always stress over these dinners. Just relax. Four years ago, during the Nexora layoffs, I pulled us through that trench alone. You'd think a Sunday dinner would be a breeze compared to that."

I stared at the brass company plaque sitting on our credenza. He survived the Nexora cuts because I canceled eleven high-paying photography gigs to manage the kids full-time, quietly transferring forty-eight thousand dollars from my Northlight Studio credit line to cover our mortgage. I kept quiet then to protect his pride. I kept quiet now, unfolding my linen napkin.

"I added rosemary to the sauce," I told the table, changing the subject.

Paige reached across the table, her hand hovering over the serving spoon. "Oh, Scott's stomach can't handle rosemary right now. We talked about it on Tuesday."

The clinking of silverware stopped.

I picked up a bottle of sparkling cider, pouring a glass, and slid it toward my husband. Scott didn't thank me. Instead, he pushed the glass down the table toward our son.

"Hannah, you're my wife, not an event photographer," Scott snapped, his tone sharp enough to cut glass. "Stop documenting everyone's reactions."

Silence fell over the dining room.

At the far end of the table, Ben paused his knife over a crusty loaf of bread. He handed a slice to his son, Noah, then met my eyes. Ben and I had shared these Sunday dinners for seven years, knowing each other for eleven. We had never shared a private coffee, never texted past nine at night, never crossed a single boundary. His gaze offered no comfort, only a grim, silent confirmation that we were both witnessing the same anomaly.

"Dad," Chloe asked, her fork pushing a noodle around her plate. "How did Aunt Paige know you leave for Chicago on Thursday?"

Scott shifted his weight, his chair scraping loudly against the hardwood. "I just mentioned it in the group chat."

Ava, Paige's teenage daughter, jumped in with practiced speed. "Mom remembers everything. She has a freak memory."

All four children lowered their heads, focusing intensely on their food. The tension in the room thickened, pressing down on my chest. I swallowed the bitter taste in my mouth, refusing to start a screaming match with an audience of kids.

Then, the smart screen on the credenza lit up.

The device synced automatically with Scott's phone for family calendar alerts. Tonight, it displayed a text message notification in massive, glowing font. Paige's smiling contact photo hovered next to the words.

"Sometimes I wish you had married me instead."

Scott dropped his fork. It clattered against his porcelain plate.

I didn't scream. I didn't throw my wine. I stood up, walked the five steps to the credenza, and tapped the glowing notification banner with one finger.

The screen expanded, revealing the next incoming text.

"Our time will come."

Scott lunged out of his chair, his hand slapping flat over the digital display. "It's just venting, Hannah! Her marriage is in a rough patch. People say stupid things when they're stressed."

Tears spilled over Paige's bottom lashes. She pressed both hands to her cheeks. "We haven't done anything physical! Hannah, please, don't let the kids see adults misspeak like this. It's nothing."

Scott reached for the power cord tucked behind the console.

Ben intercepted him. He clamped a heavy hand around Scott's wrist, his voice dropping an octave. "If it's just a rough patch, Scott, why has her contact been muted on your phone for two years?"

The screen glitched slightly under Scott's palm, the interface struggling to load the massive backlog of data. Words flashed across the glass, search terms pulled from the chat history.

"Custody."

"Bedrooms."

"After the switch."

Max pointed a trembling finger at the display. "Dad, what does 'after the switch' mean?"

I tapped the volume icon, silencing the incoming notification chimes, but I left the display blazing bright.

Scott ripped his arm out of Ben's grip and glared at me, his face twisting into something ugly. "Give me the admin tablet right now, Hannah."

I reached into my back pocket and pulled out my phone. I didn't open the home control app. Instead, I launched my Northlight Studio cloud server. As a professional photographer, keeping original files with unalterable timestamps was second nature. I routed the house server's backup drive directly into my secure work cloud and hit the archive sync button.

"Hannah, stop," Paige begged, stepping away from the table. She reached a shaking hand toward me. "If you love me, don't turn my most vulnerable words into evidence."

I looked at the woman standing in my dining room. Seven years ago, I made up the guest bed for her. She slept in my house for nineteen nights when she fought with Ben. I drove her to twelve different therapy appointments, sitting in the sterile waiting rooms while she cried.

I stared right into her tear-filled eyes, completely silent. I did not tell her I loved her.

A green progress bar shot across my phone screen, hitting one hundred percent. The smart screen on the credenza flashed a system alert.

"Archive Complete. Recovered Messages: 612."

Scott's hand hovered inches from the power cord, trembling.

Ben turned away from the two of them. He gathered Chloe, Max, Noah, and Ava, quietly ushering the four kids into the hallway. The heavy oak door clicked shut behind them.

Ben walked back into the dining room and planted himself firmly beside me. He pointed at the blinking folder icon on the screen. "Open the log."

Scott's face drained of all color, leaving his skin a sickly, pale gray. He looked at the screen, then at me.

"If you open that last file," Scott warned, his voice falling to a harsh whisper, "neither of our families are coming back from this."

I tapped the folder icon.
