Chapter 1 of My Husband Suspended Me for His Mistress

The corridor outside the surgical wing smelled like it always did—antiseptic and cold coffee—but I would remember it now as the place where my career ended. Richard Holloway stood in front of me in his gray suit, clipboard against his chest like a shield. He was the chief of staff, a man who had shaken my hand at three hospital galas and never once looked at me the way he was looking at me now. Which was to say, not at all.

"Effective immediately," he said, eyes on the tile floor, "your surgical privileges are suspended pending a full review. Given Miss Stephens's post-operative decline, the board felt it couldn't wait."

"Richard." I kept my voice level. Surgeons don't get to raise their voices, not even when the ground is falling away. "She missed two follow-ups. She was non-compliant with anticoagulant therapy. It's in her chart."

"The chart will be reviewed." He still wasn't looking at me. "I'm sorry, Dr. Freeman."

He wasn't. I could tell by how fast he turned and walked away, his shoes clicking a getaway rhythm down the hall.

My badge didn't work at the elevator. I stood there another second, swiping it against the reader like an idiot, watching the little red light blink no, no, no. Somewhere behind me a resident I'd trained was pretending very hard not to watch. I pressed my thumb into the inside of my wrist, hard, the way I used to when a heart stopped under my hands and I needed one more second of stillness before I moved. I didn't cry. I didn't make a sound. I just turned and took the stairs.

By the time I got home to the penthouse, I'd rehearsed what I'd say to Atlas so many times the words had gone smooth, like stones worn down in a river. I never got to use them.

He was standing at the window when I walked in, backlit by the city, and he didn't turn around right away. When he finally did, his face had the flat, closed look I recognized from board meetings—the face he wore when a decision had already been made and he was only informing you of it.

"You suspended me," I said. "Or you let Holloway do it for you."

"Maya could have died, Margot." His voice was clipped, each word set down like a brick. "She's still in a monitored bed because you couldn't manage a straightforward post-op recovery."

"She refused her medication. Twice. She skipped—"

"I don't want excuses." He held up a hand, actually held up his hand, like I was a junior associate derailing a meeting. "I trusted you with her. The one thing I asked—"

"You didn't ask me anything." My voice stayed even, but something in my chest was climbing, fast, toward my throat. "You asked Richard Holloway. You asked the board. You never once asked me what happened."

"I've already started the paperwork with the medical board." He said it the way he'd announce a merger. "Your license is going to be reviewed."

Four minutes. I timed it later, replaying it in my head—four minutes from the moment I walked in to the moment he walked out, and in all four of those minutes he never once asked me a question that wasn't rhetorical. He left me standing in the living room with the city lights coming up gold and cold through the glass, and I realized I was alone in a two-thousand-square-foot apartment that no longer felt like it had my name anywhere in it.

She came the next morning, of course she did. I opened the door already knowing, somehow, that it would be her—Valentina Stephens, dressed in white the way she always was, pale and lovely and radiating the particular fragility that made every room bend around her. Her hair was down. Her hands were folded in front of her like she was praying.

"Margot." She said my name softly, like it hurt her to say it. "I'm so sorry about all of this."

"Are you."

"I begged him not to be too hard on you." Her eyes were wide, glossy, sincere in the way that only a truly practiced liar can manage. "I told him, it's not her fault, she's a good doctor, but you know how Atlas gets when he's scared." A small, apologetic smile. "He loves so fiercely. It's honestly the thing I've always admired most about him."

I didn't answer. I just watched her, the way you watch something you already know is venomous, cataloguing it instead of flinching from it.

She left an hour later, gliding out on a wave of perfume and unfinished sentences. That afternoon, alone in the apartment that still smelled faintly of her, I watched my phone light up with a notification I didn't want and couldn't stop myself from opening. A photo. Valentina at a candlelit table, Atlas's hand resting low on her back, his head bent toward hers like she was something breakable and precious.

*Some bonds time cannot break.*

I sat on the couch we'd picked out together, in the apartment I already understood, with total clarity, I was about to lose, and I read the caption three times. Then I set the phone face-down on the marble and pressed my thumb into my wrist until the shaking stopped.
