Chapter 1 of My Husband Stole Thanksgiving for His First Love

I spent two days roasting the turkey, rolling pie dough, polishing my mother’s silver, and checking every allergy on our family list.

Adam spent those same two days telling our four-year-old son that his newly divorced first love “didn’t have a family right now.”

I fell asleep for ninety minutes on Thanksgiving afternoon.

When I woke up, the turkey was gone, the pies were gone, my mother’s silver was gone, and so were my husband and son.

Family location put them at Rebecca’s house.

Her livestream showed Adam carving my turkey while strangers praised him for giving a lonely woman a real holiday.

Then Finn smiled into the camera. “Aunt Rebecca gets to be our Thanksgiving mom today. Mommy gets us all the other days.”

Adam laughed. “He gets it.”

I photographed the empty kitchen, booked the divorce consultation I had been afraid to confirm, and turned off my location sharing.

“Claire?” Adam texted.

“Why did your location disappear?”

I locked the kitchen door instead of answering.

"Put my mother's silver back in the cabinet, Adam." I kept my voice low, pressing the silicone basting brush into the turkey's skin.

Adam paused by the front door, hooking a finger through the handle of the antique gravy boat. "Rebecca just finalized her divorce, Claire. She’s miserable today. I’m taking her a little food later so her table feels like a home."

Rebecca was not just an old friend. She had been Adam’s high school girlfriend, the first woman he ever said he loved. He insisted that history had been dead for years. I had believed him—until he started treating her loneliness like a claim on our home.

"That silverware doesn't leave this house."

He scoffed, setting the piece on the entryway console. "You get too attached to things. It’s just metal."

Before I could answer, a small hand yanked the linen napkin I had just folded beside the floral centerpiece. Finn, our four-year-old, crumpled the fabric against his chest.

"This is for Aunt Rebecca," Finn announced, marching toward his father. "Mommy has them every year."

I pointed the dripping brush at the table. "Finn, put that back. We ask before taking things that belong to the family."

Adam intercepted the boy, offering a high-five. "Good job sharing, buddy. See, Claire? Even a four-year-old understands generosity."

This wasn't new. Just months ago at preschool, Adam had waved the allergy chart I spent three hours color-coding, telling the other parents, "We’ve got a system," adding loudly that I just loved to worry. He trained Finn to see my effort as community property, free for the taking.

"Tell him to ask," I said, my grip tightening on the brush handle.

"Don't ruin the holiday mood," Adam replied, turning his back to me and opening the hall closet.

Ninety minutes later, I woke up from a nap to a house smelling of cold grease and silence.

I walked into the kitchen and stopped.

The heavy roasting pan sat on the center island, holding nothing but a congealed layer of fat. The twenty-pound turkey I had prepped for two days was gone. I spun around. The two pumpkin pies, the garlic mashed potatoes, the green bean casserole—vanished.

I pulled open the dining room sideboard. The mahogany box holding my mother’s silver flatware sat empty, the velvet lining indented where the knives and forks used to rest.

"Adam?" I called out.

No answer.

I didn't dial his number. I opened the family location app on my phone. Two blue dots pulsed at an address three miles away. Rebecca’s townhouse.

A notification popped up at the top of my screen: "Rebecca is live."

I tapped the alert.

My golden-brown turkey sat in the center of a stranger's dining table. Adam stood at the head, gripping my mother's silver carving knife, slicing the breast meat. Comments scrolled up the side of the video.

"He is such a good guy."

"Willing to give a newly divorced woman a real Thanksgiving."

Rebecca raised a glass of white wine to the camera. "Thank you to the people who give me family when I'm at my loneliest."

She didn't mention my name. She didn't thank the woman who spent six hours basting the bird they were eating.

Then Finn leaned into the frame, his face smeared with cranberry sauce.

"Where's your mom, sweetie?" a viewer asked in the chat. Rebecca read it aloud, a sympathetic smile playing on her lips.

Finn smiled brightly at the camera. "Aunt Rebecca gets to be our Thanksgiving mom today. Mommy gets us all the other days."

Adam chuckled, reaching over to ruffle Finn's hair. "He gets it."

He didn't correct him. He didn't tell his son that a mother isn't a position you loan out for the holidays.

I closed the app. The kitchen hummed with the sound of the refrigerator. I didn't scream. I didn't throw the empty roasting pan against the wall.

Instead, I opened my camera. I took a photo of the cold grease. I snapped a picture of the empty velvet box in the drawer. I took a screenshot of the livestream, capturing Adam holding the heirloom knife.

I opened my email. Mara’s message from Tuesday—she had managed my mother’s restaurant for years— sat unread at the top. "Bennett Table’s commercial kitchen license is still active. Your mom’s upstairs apartment is cleared out. You can move in whenever."

I switched to my browser and loaded the family lawyer’s website I had bookmarked three months ago. I clicked the calendar icon and booked the earliest consultation slot for tomorrow morning.

Then, I opened the settings on my phone and disabled my location sharing.

Less than a minute later, a text from Adam appeared. "Claire? Why did your location disappear?"

I locked the screen and tossed the phone onto the empty counter.

At eight o'clock that evening, the front door rattled open.

Adam walked in, carrying a stack of plastic containers. Finn trailed behind him, kicking off his shoes.

"Mommy, did you save me a second slice of pie?" Finn asked, running straight for the pantry.

I leaned against the sink, watching Adam set Rebecca's cheap plastic leftover boxes on the marble island. "They took all the pies, Finn."

Adam frowned, his hand freezing on a plastic lid. "You didn't bake a backup? Or keep anything in the fridge for us?"

"You took the entire meal."

"It was for a good cause." Adam crossed his arms, his tone hardening. "Don't make a big deal out of this in front of the kid. It's Thanksgiving. We can order a pizza."

"I'm not making a big deal out of anything," I said quietly.

Adam rolled his eyes. "Right. You're just going to sulk. Let's go, Finn, I'll order a pepperoni."

He thought this was a holiday tantrum. He thought I would wake up tomorrow, clean the roasting pan, and make him breakfast.

I walked past him, heading straight for the study.

I pulled the key from my jeans pocket and unlocked the bottom drawer of the filing cabinet. I bypassed the old tax returns and reached into the very back. My fingers closed around the thick manila envelope holding my Bennett Table company documents and my passport.

I slid the envelope into my leather tote bag and zipped it shut.

For the first time all day, I felt certain of something: I was not packing for a holiday. I was preparing to leave.
