Chapter 1 of Carrying His Heir After The Divorce

The housekeeper, Maria, found Kara arranging white roses in the foyer.

"Mrs. Whitaker," she said, her voice soft, "Mr. Whitaker is waiting for you in the study."

Kara's fingers stilled on a petal. It was the first time he had summoned her in the six months they'd been sleeping in separate wings of the sprawling estate.

She nodded, not turning around. "Thank you, Maria."

The walk to the study felt longer than usual. The hallway was a canyon of shadows, lined with portraits of Whitaker ancestors whose painted eyes seemed to follow her. Her heels sank into the Persian rug, making no sound. It felt like walking through water.

She pushed open the heavy walnut door.

Julian stood with his back to her, a silhouette against the vast window overlooking the gardens. He was in a Tom Ford suit, perfectly tailored, his posture radiating a cold, unapproachable power.

He turned at the sound of the latch clicking shut. His handsome face was a mask of indifference.

"Sit down, Kara." His voice was as cool and sharp as the cut of his suit. He gestured with his chin toward the polished mahogany desk where a single blue folder sat.

She didn't move. She just watched him, her stillness a quiet defiance. She knew this moment was coming. She had been waiting for it for two years.

A flicker of impatience crossed his features. He walked behind the desk himself, the leather of his chair groaning as he sat. He pushed the folder across the vast, empty surface toward her.

"Seraphina is awake," he said. It wasn't an explanation. It was a verdict.

"I need to do right by her," he added, his gaze fixed on the folder, not on her. "This is the divorce agreement. The terms are generous, exactly as stipulated in our prenup."

Kara's fingertips brushed the cold, glossy cover before she picked it up. The logo of Sullivan & Cromwell, New York's most formidable law firm, was embossed at the top.

She opened it.

Page after page of sterile legal language detailed the assets she would receive: cash, an Upper East Side apartment, some negligible fund shares. Each clause felt like a price tag on the last two years of her life.

Julian watched her, waiting. He expected tears, accusations, a scene. Anything but this unnerving silence, broken only by the soft rustle of paper. A strange irritation began to crawl under his skin.

"Is there a problem?" he finally asked, his tone laced with a scrutiny he couldn't hide.

Kara reached the last page. She picked up the Montblanc pen that was already laid out for her. Her signature was fluid and clean: Kara Webster.

She closed the folder and pushed it back to him.

"No problem," she said. Her voice was light, but the clarity of it cut through the heavy silence in the room.

A flicker of genuine surprise crossed Julian's dark eyes. He hadn't anticipated this. Not this easy.

"But I have one condition," Kara said, speaking before he could.

He leaned back, a flicker of the shrewd businessman replacing the surprised husband. "Go on."

"After the divorce, we never see each other again," Kara said, meeting his gaze directly. "Not at any event, under any circumstances. Julian, I want you to disappear from my world completely."

The words landed like a physical blow, silencing the prepared, reasonable speech he had rehearsed in his head.

He stared at her. The eyes that had always been so compliant, so gentle, were now filled with a chilling, resolute coldness.

"Fine," he bit out, the single word tight with something he wouldn't name.

Just then, his private phone buzzed on the desk. He glanced at the screen, and the ice on his face thawed instantly. "Yvonne, push the Tokyo meeting tomorrow to the afternoon."

He stood up, already turning away from her, his attention fully on the call. He walked around the desk and straight toward the door, not giving her another glance.

Kara listened as his voice, now softened with a tenderness she had never heard directed at her, discussed some project detail with the person on the other end.

She stood frozen in place until his footsteps faded down the hall.

Slowly, she took a deep, shuddering breath, as if trying to expel his very presence from her lungs.

Maria knocked softly and entered. "Ma'am, dinner is ready. Is Mr. Whitaker...?"

"He's busy," Kara cut her off, her expression smoothing back into its usual calm. "Just have it sent to my room, please, Maria."

She walked out of the study, not looking back at the blue folder that held the end of her marriage.

The hallway lights cast her shadow long and thin against the wall. She kept her spine perfectly straight, each step steady and measured.

Back in her bedroom, she closed the door, shutting out the world. She walked to the window just in time to see the headlights of Julian's car sweep across the driveway and vanish into the night.

He was going to Seraphina. She knew it.

No tears came. Instead, a violent churning started in her stomach, a wave of physical nausea so intense it made her gasp.
