My Husband Sent Me to a $20 Maternity Ward Summary

Contractions tear through Gabriela in relentless waves, each one sharper than the last. She clings to the hospital bed rail, fighting for breath, but the pain won't relent. Her husband dumped her in a $20 maternity ward—no private room, no comfort, just cold sterility and a nurse's whispered encouragement. "You're doing great, Gabriela," the nurse murmurs, the only warmth in a night of abandonment. Alone, broke, and betrayed, Gabriela must endure labor and decide who she will become.

Chapter 1 of My Husband Sent Me to a $20 Maternity Ward

The pain came in waves. Each one bigger than the last. I gripped the hospital bed rail and tried to breathe like the nurse told me. In. Out. In. Out. But the contractions didn't care about breathing techniques.

"You're doing great, Gabriela," the nurse said. Her voice was kind. I didn't know her name. I'd been alone in this room for six hours.

I thought about calling Luka. My phone sat on the table next to me. One call and he'd be on a plane. One text and his entire legal team would descend on this hospital like an army. But I didn't reach for it. I came back to New York to finish this myself. To sign the papers, close the accounts, and sever the last legal thread tying me to Dustin Chapman. I didn't expect to go into labor in the middle of it.

Another contraction hit. I made a sound I didn't recognize.

"Almost there," the nurse said. "One more push."

I pushed. My whole body screamed. And then I heard it. A cry. Small and furious and perfect.

"It's a girl," the nurse said.

They placed her on my chest. She was warm and slippery and impossibly tiny. Her eyes were closed. Her fists were clenched. I touched her cheek and something cracked open inside me that I didn't know was still sealed.

"One more," the nurse said gently. "Your son's coming."

I barely had time to process the words before the next contraction came. This one was faster. Harder. And then another cry filled the room.

"And here's your boy."

They laid him beside his sister. Two babies. Olive and Micah. The names I'd chosen alone, months ago, sitting in a hotel room with my hand on my belly. Luka didn't even know I'd picked them yet.

I held them both and cried. Not sad tears. Not happy tears. Just tears. The kind that come when something ends and something else begins and you're too tired to tell the difference.

The nurse cleaned them up and took them for tests. I lay back and stared at the ceiling. The room was quiet. My phone buzzed once. Twice. I didn't look.

An hour later, Dustin walked in.

He was wearing a suit. His hair was gelled. He smelled like cologne I used to buy him for Christmas. He stopped in the doorway and looked around like he was checking into a hotel.

"Where are they?" he asked.

"Nursery," I said. My voice was hoarse. "They're doing tests."

He nodded. He didn't ask how I was. He didn't apologize for being late. He walked to the window and checked his phone.

"I'll go see them," he said. "Be right back."

He left. I closed my eyes.

When he came back, he was smiling. The kind of smile he used at business dinners. Big. Fake. Practiced.

"They're beautiful," he said. "My kids. Can you believe it?"

I didn't answer. I was too tired to explain biology to a man who'd spent three years blaming me for miscarriages his body caused.

He pulled a folded paper from his jacket pocket. "I got us a great deal on the recovery center," he said. He sounded proud. "Twenty bucks a night. Found it on an app. Shared ward, but hey, you'll have company. Meals included. Very fiscally responsible."

I stared at him. He was serious.

"Twenty dollars," I repeated.

"Per night," he said. "I know, right? You can't beat that. I already booked it. They're expecting you this afternoon."

He set the confirmation printout on the table beside my phone. It had a clipart stork in the corner.

"I gotta run," he said. He checked his watch. "Brooklynn's got an appointment. But I'll check in later. Congrats, Gabriela. You did good."

He kissed my forehead. It felt like being marked by something cold. And then he was gone.

I lay there for a long time. The confirmation paper sat next to me. Twenty dollars a night. Fluorescent lights. Communal bathrooms. Cafeteria trays. He thought I would go there. He thought I would take his children — Luka's children — to a discount recovery ward he found on a coupon app.

I reached for my hospital bag. Past the leather notebook where I'd been documenting every fraudulent transfer, every forged signature, every dollar Dustin stole while I was grieving babies that were never going to survive his broken biology. My fingers found the black card. Matte finish. No spending limit. Luka's name embossed in silver.

I picked up my phone and dialed the number on the postpartum center's brochure. A woman answered on the first ring.

"Good afternoon. How may I assist you?"

"I need the penthouse suite," I said. "For myself and my twins. Today."

"Of course. May I have a card on file?"

I read her the numbers. She didn't hesitate. She didn't ask questions.

"We'll have a car for you within the hour, Ms. Sullivan," she said. "Welcome home."

I hung up. I picked up Dustin's printout. I folded it once, twice, three times. Then I dropped it in the trash.

Olive and Micah came back in their bassinets. I looked at them. My daughter. My son. Luka's eyes in two tiny faces.

"We're going somewhere better," I whispered.

An hour later, I was in a private car with leather seats and bottled water. The twins slept. I opened Instagram and took a photo of the skyline through the tinted window. Then another of Olive's hand curled around my finger. Then one more of the orchid already waiting on my nightstand in the suite.

I posted them all. No captions. No tags.

I knew exactly who would see them.

I set my phone face-down and closed my eyes. For the first time in three years, I smiled.

Kisses of Healing, Hearts in Turmoil is a completed werewolf romance on Literiess about Sophia Helvig, a Beta-born omega discarded by her fated mate Santiago Romano for a Luna chosen by his parents. The novel doesn't romanticize the bond — it interrogates it, turning "fated mate" into a mechanism of control rather than destiny. This review covers what the trope delivers, where it gets uncomfortable, and whether it's worth the unlock.
