Chapter 1 of My Husband Paid For His Mistress With My Mother’s Life

My mother couldn’t wait past tonight for her surgery, but my husband had just transferred her life-saving money to another woman.

"Mrs. Blackwood?" The billing nurse tapped the glass partition. "I need the authorization code for the deposit."

I stood in the fluorescent glare of Mount Sinai Hospital at two in the morning. "I'm pulling it up right now. Just give me one second."

"Dr. Evans was clear," the nurse pressed, her tone sharp. "Six hours. If Margaret doesn't get the aneurysm clipped by 8 AM, it will rupture again. The damage will be irreversible. We cannot prep the OR without the funds."

"I have the money," I said, my fingers trembling as I unlocked my phone. "We saved a hundred and eighty thousand specifically for this."

I opened the banking app. The loading circle spun.

Available Balance: $412.00.

I blinked, rubbing my eyes. The screen didn't change. The money I had transferred into our joint checking account yesterday was gone.

"Where is it?" I muttered.

I tapped the recent transactions tab. A single line of text jumped out at me.

*Transfer - $180,000 - Vanessa Reed.*

Time stamp: 1:15 AM. One hour ago.

Vanessa Reed. Adrian’s old family friend. The woman who had suddenly reappeared in our lives six months ago.

I stepped away from the window and dialed my husband's number.

One ring. Two. Three. Four.

"Pick up," I whispered.

On the fifth ring, the line clicked open. The bright, sharp clink of champagne flutes and loud laughter poured through the speaker.

"Evelyn," Adrian said. His voice was completely relaxed.

"Where is the money?"

"Keep your voice down. I'm in the middle of something."

"You drained our joint account," I said, gripping the phone tight enough to crack the case. "You gave my mother's surgery money to Vanessa."

"Vanessa just got out of that brutal commercial lawsuit," he replied. "She needed the cash immediately to save her design studio from foreclosure."

"My mother is in the ICU! Her brain is bleeding!"

"Stop being so dramatic," Adrian sighed. "Your mother is just moving the surgery up a few days. The doctor said she was stable yesterday. Can't she wait?"

"She had a secondary bleed tonight. She needs the operation in six hours or she dies."

"I'll move some funds around on Monday," he said. "Vanessa was desperate, Evelyn. She had nowhere else to turn."

"Monday is too late!"

He ended the call.

I stared at the disconnected screen. A notification dropped down from the top edge of my phone. Oliver had just posted an update.

I tapped the alert.

A photo loaded. My eighteen-year-old son stood in a brightly lit VIP lounge. He had his arm wrapped tightly around Vanessa’s shoulders, grinning at the camera. Vanessa leaned into him, holding a crystal glass.

Location tag: The Plaza Hotel.

Just this morning, Oliver had looked me dead in the eye over breakfast.

"Daddy is in Chicago for a business trip, Mom."

He had lied to my face. My husband and my son were throwing a party for another woman using the money meant to save my mother's life.

I shoved my phone into my pocket and sprinted for the elevator.

* * *

The music thumped against the velvet-lined walls of the private club. I pushed through the heavy glass doors and scanned the room.

I spotted them immediately.

Adrian stood by a leather booth, looking immaculate in his tailored suit. Vanessa sat on the edge of the sofa, wiping a delicate tear from her cheek while investors patted her shoulder. Oliver sat right beside her, handing her a fresh napkin.

I walked straight up to their table.

"Adrian."

He turned. His jaw tightened instantly. "Evelyn. What are you doing here?"

"Give me the money back. Now."

The music seemed to dip. The partners sitting around the table went completely still, staring at me.

Vanessa stood up. Her eyes instantly watered, brimming with unshed tears. "Evelyn, I'm so sorry. I didn't know the money was for Margaret. Adrian just said you guys had some extra savings."

"Don't speak to me," I snapped. "Wire it back. Right this second."

"I can call my bank in the morning—"

"My mother doesn't have until the morning!"

Oliver shoved his way forward, planting himself directly between me and Vanessa.

"Mom, stop it!" my son yelled, his face red with anger.

I stared at him. "Oliver. Get out of the way."

"No! You're embarrassing us. Vanessa isn't selfish like you. She really needs help!"

The words struck my chest like a physical blow. Selfish. I had spent eighteen years raising him, cooking his meals, driving him to every game, and he stood there defending a woman he barely knew.

"She stole your grandmother's surgery money," I said.

"She didn't steal anything! Dad gave it to her because her studio was going under. You only ever care about your side of the family anyway."

Adrian stepped up and grabbed my wrist. His grip bruised my skin.

"Don't act crazy in front of my partners," he hissed, leaning in close. "You are making a scene. Go home. We will discuss this tomorrow."

I looked down at his hand wrapped around my arm.

I didn't cry. For the first time in twenty years of marriage, the tears simply weren't there.

I yanked my arm free.

"I'm not acting crazy," I said. "I'm done."

I reached for my left hand. I slid the diamond wedding band off my finger. I slammed it onto the glass table. The metal rang out sharply against the crystal glasses.

Adrian frowned. "What are you doing?"

I reached behind my neck and unclasped the heavy emerald necklace. The one he had given me for our twentieth anniversary last month.

"I'm paying for the surgery," I said.

I turned on my heel and walked out, ignoring Oliver calling my name.

* * *

I needed cash.

I walked three blocks down to a 24-hour luxury exchange on 6th Avenue. I tossed the emerald necklace onto the glass counter.

"How much?" I asked.

The dealer eyed the stones under a loupe. "Fifty grand."

"It's worth three hundred."

"At two in the morning, it's worth fifty."

"Make it eighty and wire it directly to this hospital billing account," I said, sliding the paper across the counter. "Do it right now."

He typed on his keyboard for two minutes. "Done."

I sprinted back into the sliding doors of Mount Sinai at 3:15 AM.

The hallway outside the ICU was empty. The silence felt heavy. I looked up.

The red emergency light above Room 4 was flashing rapidly.

Nurses rushed past me, pushing a crash cart.

"Wait!" I yelled. "I paid the deposit. You can do the surgery now."

Dr. Evans pushed through the swinging doors. He pulled off his surgical cap. His scrubs were stained.

"Mrs. Blackwood," he said, stopping in front of me.

"I got the money," I said, holding up the receipt. "Take her to the OR."

He shook his head. "Margaret just had another massive hemorrhage."

My stomach dropped. "What?"

"The pressure spiked too fast. It's extremely critical. We are doing everything we can to stabilize her, but..."

"But what?"

"You need to prepare yourself," he said. "The window for the safe operation closed."

He turned and went back inside, letting the heavy doors swing shut behind him.

I stood alone in the cold hallway.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

I pulled it out slowly. A text message from Adrian lit up the screen.

*When you calm down, remember to apologize to Vanessa.*

I stared at the glowing words while the alarm from my mother's room echoed down the corridor.

Would I even get the chance to say goodbye?
