My Husband Let His Mistress Replace Me Summary
Chapter 1 of My Husband Let His Mistress Replace Me
The VIP lounge of Natasha's nightclub was colder than I expected, the air thick with expensive cologne and cigarette smoke. I smoothed down the front of my uniform—a black dress that hugged every curve and left little to imagination—and tried to steady my breathing. Three years of this life had taught me to hide fear, but tonight was different. The text from Natasha had been cryptic: 'VIP client waiting. Don't keep him waiting.'
I pushed open the heavy velvet curtain and froze.
Nolan Andrews sat in the dim booth, his back straight as a blade, his eyes fixed on the glass of whiskey in his hand. Three years had carved him into someone new—or perhaps someone I'd never truly known. His college-boy warmth was gone, replaced by the sharp angles of a man who commanded rooms with his mere presence. The tailored suit probably cost more than I'd earned in months.
'Lainey Warren,' he said without looking up. My name in his mouth sounded like a curse.
'Mr. Andrews,' I managed, my voice barely above a whisper. He finally raised his eyes to mine, and I searched desperately for a flicker of the boy who'd once held my hand on Montauk Beach. There was nothing—just cold, polished granite where warmth used to live.
'You look well,' he said, the lie hanging between us like smoke. I knew what I looked like—thinner, paler, the shine gone from my eyes. Three years of night shifts and men's hands had left their marks.
He slid a document across the table. 'Marriage contract. One million dollars to your father's creditors in exchange for your signature.'
I stared at the paper, my hands trembling. 'You want to marry me?'
'I want to own you,' he corrected, his voice flat. 'The way you sold yourself to anyone with a wallet three years ago.'
The accusation stung because it was so wrong. If only he knew the truth—that every dollar I'd earned had gone to Vincent Marlo, the loan shark who'd threatened to break my father's fingers if we didn't pay. But I couldn't tell him. The shame was too heavy, and Nolan's hatred was already a living thing between us.
'You've done well for yourself,' I said, glancing around at the VIP section he'd reserved for this meeting. 'I heard you're a billionaire now.'
'A self-made one,' he replied, the emphasis cutting. 'Unlike some people who trade themselves for a quick payout.'
I picked up the pen, its weight suddenly enormous. 'Why?' I asked. 'Why me?'
His smile was sharp as a knife. 'Because you're the only person who ever broke me. And now I get to return the favor.'
I signed my name on the dotted line, watching the ink dry in the dim light. Nolan's fingers brushed mine as he took the contract, and for a moment, I remembered how those same hands had once traced patterns on my skin with such tenderness.
'The courthouse tomorrow at noon,' he said, standing. 'Don't be late. Your debt has been called in.'
He left without another word, leaving me alone with the empty whiskey glass and the echo of his cologne. I pressed my forehead against the cool leather of the booth and tried to remember how to cry.
The courthouse ceremony was fifteen minutes of legal fiction. Kyle Hawkins stood beside Nolan, his eyes boring into me with undisguised contempt. Nolan didn't look at me during the vows, his jaw tight, his gaze fixed on some middle distance. When the judge pronounced us husband and wife, there was no kiss—just Nolan's hand gripping my elbow as he steered me toward the exit.
'So that's it?' Kyle muttered as we walked to Nolan's car. 'Three years of waiting, and you marry her in a courthouse?'
'Patience,' Nolan replied, his voice low. 'The best revenge takes time.'
The drive to his Upper East Side penthouse was silent, the city lights blurring past the windows. When we arrived, he led me through the marble foyer, past the soaring ceilings and priceless art, to a small door tucked away in the kitchen.
'Your quarters,' he said, pushing the door open to reveal a tiny utility room. A cot, a metal chair, a bare lightbulb hanging from the ceiling. No window. 'This is where you belong.'
He closed the door behind him, leaving me alone in the darkness. I sat on the cot, my wedding ring—a simple band he'd selected without my input—feeling foreign on my finger. I pulled out my phone and dialed my mother's number.
'Lainey!' Carol's voice was warm with excitement. 'How was the ceremony? Tell me everything!'
I swallowed hard and began to lie. 'It was beautiful, Mom. The flowers, the music—everything was perfect. Nolan was so attentive, so loving. I'm the happiest bride in the world.'
'Oh, sweetheart,' she sobbed with joy. 'I'm so glad you found someone who treats you like a queen. You deserve it.'
I closed my eyes, feeling the weight of my deception settle into my bones. 'I know, Mom. I'm so lucky.'
When I hung up, I sat in the darkness of my new home and realized I'd forgotten how to cry.
