Chapter 1 of My Husband Left Me Pregnant for His Former Lover

I left the office at four thirty. First time in eight months I'd walked out before dark, and the security guard, Frank, actually whistled when I passed his desk.

"Someone's playing hooky," he said.

"Anniversary," I said, and I felt the word sit warm in my chest the whole way to Whole Foods.

Two years. Alden and I met at the entrance, and he had that grin on him, the one from Brooklyn, from the studio apartment with the radiator that only worked if you kicked it. He held up a bag of the cheap ramen we used to eat when we couldn't afford anything else.

"For old times," he said. "Figured we'd cook it right this time. Real broth. Real everything."

I laughed. I actually laughed, standing there under the fluorescent lights, forty years old and still stupid enough to think a bag of instant noodles was romantic. But it was. Because it meant he remembered. It meant somewhere under the company and the board meetings and the two years of marriage, we were still the same two people splitting a five-dollar meal and calling it a feast.

We filled the cart slow. No rush. Scallions, pork belly, soft-boiled eggs. He kept bumping his shoulder into mine in the aisle, on purpose, like a kid. I thought, this is it. This is the life I built. I earned this.

We were at the register when he went still.

I followed his eyes across the store, past the flower display, to a woman standing at a self-checkout with her card in her hand and her face gone pale. A boy, maybe six, was pressed into her leg, crying the kind of tired crying that isn't about anything specific anymore, just exhaustion.

"Alden?"

He didn't answer. He put down the basket he was holding — right there, on the belt, half our anniversary dinner still in it — and walked away from me.

I watched him cross the store. I watched him say something to the cashier, hand over his card, crouch down in front of the boy and say something that made the crying stop. I watched him pick up her bags — four of them, heavy — and walk her out toward the taxi line like he'd done it a hundred times before.

The cashier at register nine cleared her throat. "Ma'am? You still want these eggs?"

I was holding a carton of eggs. I don't remember picking them up.

"Yes," I said. "I still want the eggs."

I paid for everything myself. I carried both bags to the car myself. I sat behind the wheel for eleven minutes before Alden got in, smelling like cold air and someone else's problem.

"Sorry about that," he said, buckling his seatbelt like nothing had happened. "Someone I knew in college. She's having a hard time."

That was it. No name. No explanation for the boy, whose hand had been curled so tight around his mother's coat that I'd seen the whiteness of his knuckles from across the store. I waited for more. Alden turned on the radio.

"Who was she?" I asked.

"Just — someone from a long time ago," he said, eyes on the road. "Rough patch. I couldn't just walk past her, Miley."

I didn't push. That was my mistake, if I'm being honest with myself now. I let it go because pushing felt small, felt like something my stepmother would have done to my father over some imagined slight, and I promised myself years ago I'd never be a woman who counted a man's kindness against him.

The ramen went cold on the counter. We ate it anyway, but the broth had that gray, tired look food gets when it sits too long, and neither of us said much.

That night, alone in our bathroom, I opened the medicine cabinet and looked at the little pack of pills I'd been taking for six years, ever since Alden and I decided the company came first. I held it in my palm and thought about stopping. We had the funding. We had the house. We had — I thought — everything.

I put it back in the drawer, unopened. Not yet, I told myself. Soon.

The texts started two days later. I saw them light up his phone at dinner, at the office, once during a client call when he actually excused himself from the room. A radiator that broke. A daycare that closed early. A fever that turned out to be nothing, but by the time he got there — wherever there was — it had already cost him two hours and a distracted apology to me over text.

"She's got no one else," he told me, every time, like it was a full sentence. Like it explained anything.

I didn't argue. I've built a career on reading contracts twice, catching the clause everyone else skims past. So I watched. I filed it away — the frequency, the softness in his voice when her name came up, the way he never once said it out loud to me.

Skyla. I learned her name from his lock screen notifications, not from him.

I told myself I was being paranoid. I told myself a lot of things, that month.
