Chapter 1 of My Husband Kept Me Deaf to Hide His Affair

The city had a voice again, and I was drunk on it.

Seven years of silence, and now the rooftop bar hummed with it—ice clinking in glasses, a saxophone drifting up from somewhere on Fifty-Third, the low roar of traffic sixteen floors down. I stood at the railing with a glass of champagne I wasn't drinking and let Manhattan pour into my ears like water into a cracked jar. Nobody knew. Not my parents in Sydney, not my sister Payton, not Jayden. Three months since the surgery. Three months of practiced silence, of nodding at sounds I wasn't supposed to hear, of learning to keep my face still while the whole world came rushing back.

I told myself I was waiting for the right moment to tell him. I told myself a lot of things that night.

The reunion was Jayden's world, not mine—his old college crowd, his old jokes, his hand always finding the small of my back to steer me through introductions I couldn't lip-read fast enough. I'd wandered toward the palms at the edge of the terrace for air, for a second of quiet that wasn't really quiet anymore, and that's when I heard him.

His voice. Low. Warm in a way I recognized, because it was the same warmth he used on me.

"—soon, I promise. I'll file the real papers. The one on our wall, the one she looks at every morning like it means something—it's never been legal. She'll never know the difference."

I didn't move. I don't think I breathed.

Through the gap in the leaves I saw her. Veronica. I knew the name before I knew the face—Jayden's college girlfriend, the one who was always "going through something," the one whose perfume I'd started noticing on his collar and told myself was nothing. She was beautiful in the unbothered way of women who have never had to fight for anything, and she was pregnant. Visibly. A hand resting on the curve of her stomach like she owned it.

"Soon isn't good enough anymore, Jayden," she said.

"I know. I know." He touched her face. The same fingers that signed *I love you* to me every single night for seven years, spelling out devotion letter by letter because I couldn't hear him say it. "Just a little longer."

The glass in my hand didn't shake. That was the strange part. I looked down and it was perfectly still, and I thought, distantly, *that's good, Camilla. Keep it still.*

I walked back across the terrace like a woman with nowhere urgent to be. I found him near the bar ten minutes later, laughing with someone from his old rowing team, and I lifted my hands and signed, slow and steady: *I'm tired. Can we go home?*

His whole face softened. He set down his drink like I was the only reason he'd come. "Of course, baby." He draped his jacket over my shoulders in the elevator, warm from his body, and I thought about how many times that gesture had made me feel safe.

In the car, the streetlights slid over the windshield in long gold streaks, and I watched them instead of him. He talked. His mouth moved. I understood every word now and let none of it land. Somewhere behind my ribs, something was already rebuilding itself into steel.

That night I lay in the dark of our bedroom and listened to the guest room door open down the hall. Soft laughter. His voice, murmuring something about a nursery, about paint colors, about a crib. I lay very still and let it happen, because I had learned, in seven years of silence, exactly how to survive by not moving.

He came back before dawn smelling like her, and kissed my forehead like a man kissing something he owned.

By morning I had a plan.

While he showered for work I photographed the marriage certificate on our wall—the one I'd looked at every day like scripture—then hung it back exactly straight. I went through his desk, his files, his phone left charging on the counter, my hands steady the way they'd never let themselves be steady before. I bought a burner phone at a bodega on Court Street with cash, and that night I typed the only sentence I had left in me: *It was never real. I need to come home. Don't tell Mom and Dad yet.*

Payton answered within the hour. My sister, who has never once in her life waited for permission to be furious on someone else's behalf. *I'm already preparing. Start moving your savings tonight, small amounts. I'll have everything ready. Just tell me when.*

I read it twice. Deleted it. Stood at the kitchen window with coffee I made too hot on purpose, and watched Brooklyn wake up outside the glass, not making a sound.
