Chapter 1 of My Husband Framed Me After Killing Our Baby

Griffin texted me at six-thirty.

*Working late. Don't wait up.*

I stared at the message on my phone. The kitchen was warm. I'd made chicken and roasted vegetables. Hadley was upstairs doing homework. The table was set for three.

I opened the location app.

The blue dot sat on Madison Avenue. Upper East Side. Not his office.

I pressed my thumbnail against my index finger until it hurt.

"Mom?" Hadley appeared in the doorway, clutching Bun. "Is Daddy coming home?"

I looked at her. Six years old. Dark hair like Griffin's. My eyes.

"Not tonight, baby," I said. "How about we have a girls' dinner?"

She nodded and climbed into her chair. I served her plate. We ate. She told me about art class. I smiled and asked questions. Inside my chest something was breaking very quietly.

After Hadley went to bed, I stood in our bedroom and looked at myself in the mirror. Jeans. Sweater. No makeup. I didn't change. I picked up my keys.

The drive took twenty minutes.

I parked across the street from Marcello's. It was the kind of restaurant with white tablecloths and candles in every window. I sat in the dark car and watched people go in and out. Couples. Families. Everyone looked happy.

I pressed my thumbnail against my finger again.

Then I got out.

The hostess smiled when I walked in. "Good evening. Do you have a reservation?"

"I'm meeting someone," I said.

I walked past her before she could respond.

The dining room was full. Soft music played. Glasses clinked. I scanned the tables methodically. Left side. Right side. Back corner.

There.

Griffin sat with his back to me. Dark suit. The one I'd picked up from the dry cleaner yesterday. Across from him was a woman with long dark hair and red lips. She leaned forward, laughing. Her hand rested on the table near his.

Lola Mendoza.

I knew her. She'd been Hadley's preschool teacher two years ago. She'd smiled at me during pickup. Complimented my coat. Asked about my skincare routine.

I walked closer.

Their voices became clear.

"—just need to move the accounts before she notices," Griffin was saying. He sounded relaxed. Almost bored. "My lawyer says we can structure it as business assets. She won't have access."

Lola twirled her wine glass. "What about custody?"

"That's easy." Griffin cut into his steak. "We document everything. Her mood swings. The way she isolates herself. My lawyer says we can paint her as unstable. Unfit."

"And Hadley?" Lola's voice was light. Curious.

"Hadley's leverage," Griffin said. "Sage won't fight if she thinks she'll lose her daughter. She'll take whatever settlement I offer."

Lola smiled. "You're terrible."

"I'm practical," Griffin said.

I stopped walking.

My hands were very still at my sides.

I stepped forward into the candlelight.

"Hello, Griffin."

He turned. For one second his face went blank. Then the charm mask clicked into place. Smooth. Easy.

"Sage." He set down his fork. "What are you doing here?"

"I could ask you the same thing," I said quietly.

Lola looked at me. Her expression was calm. Almost sympathetic.

"This isn't what it looks like," Griffin said.

I laughed. It came out strange. Hollow.

"Really?" I looked at Lola. "Hello, Miss Mendoza. It's been a while."

She smiled. "Hello, Sage."

Griffin stood. "Sage, you're making a scene. Let's talk about this at home."

"No." My voice was steady. "Let's talk about it now. Let's talk about shell accounts. And custody filings. And leverage."

His jaw tightened. "You don't understand the context—"

"I understand perfectly," I said.

People at nearby tables were watching now. Griffin noticed. His face changed. The charm disappeared. What was underneath was colder.

"Go home, Sage," he said.

"Not until you answer me," I said. "How long?"

"How long what?"

"How long have you been planning this?"

He didn't answer.

I looked at Lola. She met my eyes without flinching.

"Was it before or after I lost the baby?" I asked.

Griffin grabbed my arm. His fingers dug in hard.

"That's enough," he said.

I tried to pull away. He shoved me backward.

I hit the edge of a table. Glasses shattered. Wine spilled across white cloth. I landed hard on the floor.

The restaurant went silent.

I looked up at Griffin. He was breathing hard. His face was red. For a moment he looked almost surprised at himself.

Lola watched from her seat. She took a sip of wine.

I stood slowly. My palms were bleeding from the broken glass. I didn't feel it.

I looked at Griffin.

"I want a divorce," I said.

My voice was very calm. Very quiet.

Griffin laughed. It sounded forced.

"Don't be dramatic," he said. "Go home. We'll talk tomorrow when you're not hysterical."

I didn't answer.

I turned and walked out.

Behind me I heard Lola say something. Griffin laughed again.

I drove home carefully. Hands at ten and two. Speed limit exact.

The house was dark. I checked on Hadley. She was asleep, Bun tucked under her chin.

I went to the kitchen and sat at the table.

I didn't turn on the lights.

I sat there all night.

When the sun came up, I pulled out my laptop. I opened our bank accounts. Our marriage certificate. Medical records from both miscarriages. Griffin's business filings.

I laid everything across the table in neat rows.

My hands were very steady.

I wasn't broken.

I was done.
