Chapter 1 of My Husband Forged Our Marriage to Protect His Mistress

The posts went up at seven in the morning.

I was still in bed when my phone started buzzing — not with messages from Clark, but with notifications. Tagged photos. Shared links. The kind of digital noise that meant something had already spread too far to stop.

I sat up and looked.

Harlee Simmons had bought trending spots. Not one. Several. Across every platform that mattered in this city, her face filled the feed — and Clark's arm was around her in every single one. A restaurant I recognized. A hotel rooftop I had never been invited to. A candid shot of them laughing in the back of a car, her head tipped against his shoulder, his hand resting on her knee like it belonged there.

The captions were careful. Just vague enough to deny. Just specific enough to destroy.

*Some loves are worth the wait.*

*He always comes back.*

*Happy Valentine's Day to the one who actually matters.*

I set my phone face-down on the nightstand. Picked up my coffee. It had already gone cold.

I sat there for a while, in the quiet of the penthouse that had never quite felt like mine, and I looked out at the Manhattan skyline going pale and gray in the February light. Seven years. Seven years of this apartment, this view, this careful, exhausting performance of being Clark Howard's woman — and Harlee had just announced to the entire city that the role was already taken.

I didn't cry. I hadn't cried in a long time.

What I felt was something quieter and more final than tears. A kind of settling. Like a building after the last support beam gives way — not the collapse itself, but the moment just before, when everything goes perfectly still.

I picked my phone back up and opened my own profile.

I needed to know. I needed to see it with my own eyes, not guess at it, not tell myself a story about it. Seven years of telling myself stories. I was done with that.

I chose a photo I had taken last week — just for myself, never meant to post. I was standing by the window in a silk slip, the light catching the line of my shoulder, my expression unreadable. Elegant. Composed. The kind of image that asked a question without saying a word.

I posted it. Then I put the phone down and waited.

He called in four minutes.

"Delete it." His voice was flat. Not angry — Clark rarely sounded angry. He sounded the way he always sounded when I had done something that inconvenienced him: bored, and faintly disgusted. "Right now, Meilani. You look desperate."

"Good morning to you too."

"I'm not joking. Take it down."

I looked out the window. A cab moved slowly through the street below, its yellow roof catching the gray light. "I saw Harlee's posts," I said.

Silence.

"Clark."

"That's not your business."

Those four words. I had heard variations of them for seven years. *That's not your concern. You're overreacting. You always do this.* A whole language built to make me feel like the problem.

"Delete the photo," he said again. "And don't embarrass me like this again."

The line went dead.

I looked at my phone for a moment. Then I deleted the photo — not because he told me to, but because I had already gotten what I needed. The test was complete. The result was exactly what I had known it would be, and somehow that made it worse and easier at the same time.

I got dressed. I put on my coat. I went to the courthouse.

---

The clerk was a woman in her fifties with reading glasses pushed up on her forehead and the particular patience of someone who had seen everything. She took the certificate I slid across the counter, typed something, waited. Typed something else. Her brow creased.

"Can I get your full name again?"

"Meilani Lawrence. The other party is Clark Howard. Howard Group — his family is fairly well known in the city, if that helps narrow the search."

She typed again. Waited longer this time.

I watched her face.

I had learned, in seven years of living in a house where the truth was always managed and the surface was always maintained, how to read the small things. The way a person's expression shifts before they decide what to say. The half-second of recalibration.

I saw it happen.

"Ma'am," she said carefully, "I'm not finding any record of this marriage in our system."

"Try the date again. June fourteenth, seven years ago."

She tried. She looked up at me over her glasses. "There's no record. I can run it through the state database as well, but —" She was already typing. Another pause. "I'm sorry. There's nothing here."

I looked down at the certificate in my hands. The paper was good quality. The seal looked real. Clark's signature was real — I had watched him sign it. I had held this document for seven years like it meant something.

"The certificate itself," I said, keeping my voice level. "Is there a way to verify whether it's authentic?"

She looked at it more carefully now, and I watched the shift in her expression again — the professional neutrality that meant she was seeing something she didn't want to say out loud.

"I'd recommend having it examined," she said quietly. "I can give you a number for document verification services."

"That won't be necessary," I said. "Thank you for your time."

I picked up the certificate. I put it back in my bag. I thanked her again, because I had been raised to be gracious, and I walked out.

---

The February air hit me at the top of the courthouse steps. Cold and clean and indifferent.

I stood there.

Below me, the city moved the way it always moved — cabs and pedestrians and the low constant hum of a place that did not pause for anyone's private devastation. I had no legal standing. No claim. No existence, in the eyes of the law, as Clark Howard's wife. Seven years. A miscarriage I had bled through alone on a Tuesday in November while Clark was at a dinner I wasn't invited to. A forged document in my bag. A phone full of Harlee's Valentine's Day posts.

I stood very still.

Something moved behind my eyes — not tears, not rage. Something quieter. A door, closing from the inside. Gently. Finally.

I took out my phone.

I dialed my father first. Nicolas Lawrence answered on the second ring, the way he always did, as if he had been expecting the call.

"Dad," I said. My voice was steady. "I'm coming home."

A pause. Brief and full. "I'll have your room ready," he said.

That was all. That was enough.

I ended the call and scrolled to the second number. One I hadn't dialed in years. One that had stayed in my phone through everything — through every dinner I sat through in silence, every cruelty I absorbed without flinching, every night I told myself it would get better.

It rang twice.

"Meilani." Eli Warren's voice was warm and unhurried, like he had all the time in the world. Like no time had passed at all.

"Eli," I said. "I need to talk to you."

"I know," he said simply. "I'm here."

Below me, Manhattan kept moving. I stood at the top of those steps a moment longer, the cold air sharp in my lungs, the forged certificate in my bag, and something new and very quiet settling into place behind my ribs.

Not hope, exactly. Something older than hope.

The knowledge of what I was about to do.
