Chapter 1 of My Husband Chose His Mistress Over My Dying Mother

The courtroom was silent except for my voice. I stood in front of twelve jurors and told them a story about reasonable doubt, about grainy footage and unreliable witnesses, about a young man who deserved the presumption of innocence. Every word was true, in the way that words can be true and still be a lie about everything that mattered. I did not look at the empty seat where Ila should have been sitting.

The verdict came an hour later. Not guilty. I heard someone exhale behind me, relief dressed up as joy. I shook hands. I nodded at the judge. I walked out into the corridor and pressed my thumb hard into the inside of my wrist until the skin went white, until the sting gave me something to feel besides the hollow ringing in my ears.

Then I drove straight to the hospital, because that was the deal. That had always been the deal.

My mother was propped up against three pillows, thinner than she'd been a month ago, thinner than she'd been a week ago. Josephine Lane had spent her whole life taking up exactly as much space as she needed and not an inch more, and the hospital bed seemed determined to swallow what little of her remained. I sat beside her and held her hand and said nothing about where I'd just come from. She didn't ask. That was its own kind of mercy, or its own kind of knowing.

"You look tired, baby," she said.

"Long day at the office," I said, and she let me have the lie, the way she'd been letting me have small lies for months.

I didn't find out about the dinner until the next morning, when Lawson George — Asher's assistant, a lean, quiet man who moved through the penthouse like he was trying not to disturb the furniture — sent an updated calendar to my phone. Dinner reservation, 8 p.m., private room, Le Bernardin. Two names. Asher Bryant. Amber Willis. My name wasn't on it. It had never been on it.

I found Asher in his study before he left for the office, sitting behind the desk his father had given him, aligning a row of pens along the edge of his blotter like soldiers.

"I heard you had dinner with Amber last night," I said. Not a question, exactly. I'd learned by then that questions gave him room to maneuver.

"It was a private matter," he said, without looking up. He nudged the last pen a fraction of an inch to the left. "Nothing that concerns you."

I stood there a moment longer than I needed to. Then I turned and left. I had already learned to read his silences better than his words, and his silence, that morning, said everything.

My mother, two days later, held my hand tighter than she had strength for and looked at me with the particular clarity dying people sometimes get, as if the body's failing lets something else see more clearly.

"I know something's been wrong for a long time, Evelynn," she said. "A mother knows. Even when her daughter doesn't say a word."

"I'm fine, Mom," I said, the way I'd once told hostile witnesses their timeline was fine, their alibi was fine, right up until it wasn't.

She studied me. "You were always the strong one," she said finally. "I just hope you know that strength isn't the same as carrying it alone."

I didn't answer. I couldn't. The truth would have cost her the only thing keeping her alive — a name on a transplant list Asher could make disappear with one phone call. So I said nothing, and I have hated myself for that silence every day since.

I was at the courthouse filing a motion when it happened. Amber came alone, while I was gone, and set a tablet on my mother's bedside tray. I've since pieced together what was on it — a video stitched together from twisted footage and paid lies, built to paint Ila as something she never was. My mother watched it with tubes in her arms and a monitor counting out what was left of her heart.

By the time I got the call and ran the length of that fluorescent corridor, she was already seizing.

I held her hand while the monitor's tone flattened into one long, unbroken note. I didn't scream. I didn't move. I sat there holding her hand as it went cold, while nurses spoke around me in voices pitched low, the way people speak near something broken.

Three days after the funeral, Asher came into my study without sitting down. He set a folder on the desk.

"There are financial matters that need your signature," he said. "It's the logical conclusion of where we are."

I looked at the papers. I looked at him. Something in my face must have surprised him, because he glanced away first.

I signed slowly, with the same hand that had never lost a case, and slid the papers back across the desk without a word.
