Chapter 1 of My Husband Chose His Mistress During the Hurricane

The first time I heard my husband laugh in our own house, it wasn't for me.

I was standing in the hallway with a bag of groceries against my hip, boots still wet from the base's afternoon drizzle. The sound came from the living room—low, warm, easy. A laugh I had spent five years of marriage listening for and never once been given.

I stayed still. I told myself it was because I didn't want to interrupt. That was the first lie I told myself that week. There would be many more.

Esmeralda Silva had moved in three days ago. A "health episode," Christopher had called it, his voice clipped the way it got when he expected no follow-up questions. She needed quiet. She needed care. Our spare room, the one I'd painted pale yellow two summers ago hoping it might one day be a nursery, was made up for her within an hour of the phone call.

No one asked me. I noticed that later, sitting on the edge of the bed I now slept in alone, pressing my thumb hard against the inside of my opposite wrist. The old habit. The quiet one.

By the second day, the household had rearranged itself around her without a word from anyone. Her tea was steeped first. The thermostat crept up two degrees because she said she got cold. The couch by the window—the one I used to read on in the mornings—became hers by silent decree, a blanket folded across the arm the way you'd mark territory in a house you'd already decided was yours.

Christopher spoke to her in a register I had never heard. Softer. Patient. As if every word had been weighed before it left his mouth. When he addressed me across the same room, minutes later, it was in the flat tone he used with junior officers. *Did you pick up the dry cleaning. Don't forget the base dinner Thursday.* Sentences with no music in them.

I catalogued each of these things and said nothing. That was a skill I had refined.

On the fourth day, I came home from errands with rain still in my hair and found Esmeralda standing barefoot in the kitchen, pouring water from my kettle into my cup.

She was wearing my dress.

Not any dress. The dress. Soft gray, long sleeves, a small pearl button at the collar I had sewn back on myself in a hospital bathroom the morning after they told me my son's heart had stopped. I had worn it home from the ward with dried milk still staining my chest. I had folded it in tissue paper and pushed it to the far back of my closet because I could not throw it away and I could not look at it.

My hand tightened on the paper bag until I heard something inside crack.

"That's mine," I said. My voice came out level. A small mercy.

Esmeralda turned. Her eyes went wide, then wet, on a delay so slight I almost missed it. "Oh—Juliet, I'm so sorry. Christopher said I could borrow anything from the guest closet. I didn't know—" Her hand fluttered to the collar. "Is it special? I feel awful."

Guest closet. He had moved my clothes.

"I'd like it back," I said. "Please."

Her lower lip began to tremble in that careful, practiced way. And then, of course, he was there. Christopher filled the doorway the way he filled every doorway, uniform still on, reading the room in a single sweep—Esmeralda by the counter, tears rising on cue, and me, standing over her with a grocery bag and a hard mouth.

His jaw set. He didn't ask a single question.

"Kneel," he said. "Apologize to her. Now."

The kitchen went very quiet. The refrigerator hummed. Rain ticked the window.

I looked at him. I looked at the man whose photograph I had carried in a book at seventeen, whose face I had built a life around, and I searched for something in it I recognized. There was nothing. Just command, and the small tender line his mouth made when he glanced at her.

I knelt.

The tile was cold through my jeans. I heard my own voice, calm and terrible, say, "I'm sorry, Esmeralda. I didn't mean to upset you."

She crouched slightly, touched my hair with the tips of her fingers, and whispered, "It's okay. I forgive you."

Christopher took her elbow and led her away, murmuring something I did not try to hear. The gray dress moved down the hallway and out of sight.

That night, in the spare room, I lay on top of the covers in my clothes. I pressed my thumb against my wrist in the dark and counted the pulse there until my chest stopped shaking.

I did not cry. I had learned, in this house, that crying changed nothing. Water on stone. Water on a man who had already turned away.

On the shelf across the room, faintly outlined by the hallway light I always left burning, sat a small wooden box. A hospital bracelet inside. A knitted cap the size of a plum. A letter, folded twice, to a boy who never opened his eyes.

I did not know yet that it was the last night the box would sit there.

I only knew, staring at its shape in the half-dark, that something inside me had gone quiet in a new way. Not broken. Quieter than broken.

Waiting.
