Chapter 1 of My Husband Called Me Damaged After Our Baby Died

The chandelier in the Larson penthouse throws too much light. I sit at the far end of the dining table, watching the crystal catch and scatter across the white tablecloth like broken glass. Twenty-three floors above Manhattan, the windows frame the city in a way that's supposed to feel powerful. Tonight it just feels distant.

Travis arrives late. He always does now.

Hayden Burke is on his arm.

She's wearing emerald silk that probably cost more than most people make in a month. Her hair falls in perfect waves over one shoulder. And on her left hand—catching the chandelier light like it was designed for exactly this moment—is a diamond ring.

Not an engagement ring. Travis is still married to me. But close enough that everyone at the table understands what they're looking at.

Augustine Larson sits at the head of the table, his face carved from stone. He's seventy-four and looks every year of it tonight. His fingers rest on the stem of his wine glass but he hasn't taken a sip. Beside him, Carter Reeves—Travis's executive director and permanent shadow—shifts in his seat and pretends to study the floral arrangement.

Travis pulls out Hayden's chair. She sits with a smile that could sell toothpaste. "Thank you, darling," she says, her voice pitched just loud enough for the whole table to hear.

He doesn't pull out mine. He hasn't in eight months.

I press two fingers against the inside of my left wrist beneath the table. The pulse is steady. I count three beats and let go.

"Sloane." Hayden's voice floats across the table, warm and sweet as poison. "It's so generous of you to still attend these family events. I know this must be... awkward."

She tilts her head. The diamond catches the light again.

I meet her eyes. She's twenty-nine. Flawless skin. A physician at NYC Presbyterian with a reputation for being brilliant and compassionate. Everyone loves Dr. Burke.

I know what she is.

"Not awkward at all," I say. My voice comes out smooth. Measured. "I wouldn't miss Thanksgiving."

Travis finally looks at me. It's the first time all evening. His jaw is tight, his eyes flat. He used to look at me like I was the answer to a question he'd been asking his whole life. Now he looks at me like I'm something he stepped in.

"Let's eat," Augustine says. His voice cuts through the room like a gavel.

Dinner is prepared by a chef who trained in Paris. Roasted turkey with herbs I can't pronounce. Sides that look like art. I eat three bites and taste nothing.

Hayden laughs at something Travis says. She touches his arm. Her nails are painted a soft pink—professional, appropriate, the hands of someone who saves lives for a living.

Those hands forged my medical records six months ago.

I finish my wine. The server refills it immediately. I don't touch the second glass.

Carter tries to make conversation about the Larson Group's quarterly projections. Augustine responds in single syllables. Travis ignores the whole exchange, leaning close to Hayden and murmuring something that makes her laugh again.

I watch them. I don't look away.

Ten years ago, I took a bullet meant for the man sitting across from me. Not literally—though some days I think that would've been cleaner. I put myself between Travis and the kind of danger that doesn't show up in news reports. A man named Derrick Burke wanted to destroy the Larson empire, and he decided the fastest way to Travis Larson's throat was through the woman he loved.

So Derrick took me instead.

I was twenty-four. I spent three days in a basement that smelled like rust and gasoline. When it was over, Travis held me in a hospital room and swore he'd spend the rest of his life making it up to me.

He kept that promise for about five years.

Then Hayden Burke walked into his life at a charity gala, introduced by a mutual friend, and Travis started forgetting what I'd given him. Started forgetting what I'd survived. Started listening when she whispered that I'd never really loved him. That I was damaged. That a woman like me—broken, used, tainted—couldn't possibly be faithful.

He believed her.

Of course he did.

She's Derrick Burke's sister. But Travis doesn't know that yet.

"Sloane?" Augustine's voice pulls me back. "Are you all right?"

Everyone's looking at me now. Even Travis.

"I'm fine," I say. I set my napkin on the table and stand. "It's been a long day. I think I'll turn in early."

"Oh, don't leave on our account," Hayden says. Her smile doesn't reach her eyes. It never does.

"I'm not," I say.

I walk out of the dining room without looking back. My heels click against the marble floor, steady and even, the sound of a woman who knows exactly where she's going.

The guest bedroom is at the end of the hall. I've been sleeping here since the miscarriage. Travis didn't ask me to move. I just did. Some mornings I wake up and forget where I am.

I close the door and lock it.

The room is decorated in shades of cream and gray, impersonal as a hotel. I open the nightstand drawer and take out the ultrasound image. It's small, printed on slick paper that's starting to curl at the edges. The date in the corner reads April 14th. Six months ago.

There's a blur in the center that the technician said was a heartbeat.

I look at it for ten seconds. Maybe fifteen.

Then I put it back in the drawer and close it.

I pick up my phone and dial.

Miriam answers on the second ring. "Sloane."

"I'm ready," I say.

There's a pause. Not hesitation. Preparation.

"I'll be there tomorrow," my mother says.

I hang up.

Outside the window, Manhattan glitters like it's trying to sell me something. I stand there for a long time, watching the lights, feeling nothing at all.

The war starts now.
