Chapter 1 of My Husband Built Our Dream House for Another Woman

Everyone praised my husband for building the most beautiful mansion for our anniversary.

I spent ten years helping Ryan build his real estate empire from scratch.

I even designed every single inch of this Dream House.

It was supposed to be our perfect sanctuary.

But on the day of the final walkthrough, I found a nursery already painted pink.

In the master closet, expensive maternity dresses hung beside my carefully selected suits.

Ryan caught me staring at them and didn't even look guilty.

"Chloe is pregnant with my child, and she needs a comfortable place to rest," he said coldly.

"You're just the architect, Elena, so just finish decorating it for us."

He thought I would cry and beg him to stay.

He forgot that every single blueprint he used to build his wealth was legally registered under my name.

I didn't shed a single tear that day.

I just walked out, called his estranged brother, and smiled.

"Adrian," I said into the phone.

"It's time to revoke Ryan's copyrights and take away everything he owns."

I pushed open the hand-carved mahogany doors of the mansion Ryan had unveiled for our tenth anniversary. My fingers skimmed the foyer paneling. I had spent thirty sleepless nights drawing that pattern, matching the grain from one panel to the next. The house smelled of fresh paint, Italian leather, and a floral perfume that was not mine.

Half-hidden beneath the Persian rug lay a silver tube of Givenchy lipstick.

Ten years earlier, I had slid my grandmother’s emerald ring across a sticky diner table and pawned it for fifty thousand dollars to fund Ryan’s first construction firm. He held my hands that night, tears in his eyes, and promised to build me a castle. Now I stood inside it, staring at another woman's lipstick.

I picked up the silver tube. Cherry red. I only wore nudes.

The metallic casing felt cold against my palm. I dropped it into my coat pocket and walked down the long, sunlit corridor toward the master suite.

I pushed aside the frosted glass doors of the walk-in closet. I expected to find my tailored charcoal suits and silk blouses lined up in color-coordinated perfection. I expected the scent of cedar and my signature vanilla perfume.

Instead, a row of pastel maternity dresses hung from the velvet hangers. Pale pinks, soft yellows, baby blues. Below them, arranged neatly on the shelving where my designer shoes usually sat, were three pairs of tiny, pink baby shoes.

"Those are supposed to be sorted by season."

I turned. Ryan stood in the doorway, loosening his navy silk tie. He offered no excuse and showed no embarrassment. He merely frowned at the floral dresses swaying on the rack.

"The housekeeper didn't organize the pastels properly," he complained, stepping past me to adjust a yellow sundress. "I told her Chloe likes the lighter colors at the front. She gets upset when things look cluttered."

"Who gets upset?" I asked, my voice quiet.

"Chloe."

"You moved her things into my closet."

"It's the largest closet in the house, Elena. She needs space for the new maternity lines I bought her." He pulled off his suit jacket and tossed it over a velvet chair. "She's moving in tomorrow. Her apartment is a fifth-floor walk-up, and the stairs are a hazard."

"Your twenty-three-year-old assistant is moving into our anniversary home."

"It's practical." He sighed, clearly annoyed that he had to explain this. "I need her close. I need to monitor her diet and stress levels. The doctor said her blood pressure is a bit high."

"And my blood pressure?" I asked.

He rolled his eyes. "Always making it about you."

He reached out and yanked the cashmere scarf from my neck. I didn't resist as he tossed it onto a nearby leather ottoman. He pointed a finger down the hall toward the east wing.

"Chloe needs a quiet place to rest. You're the architect. You know the layout better than anyone. Just get the soft furnishings finished by the weekend."

A hollow ringing filled my ears. I looked at the man I had loved for a decade—the man I had gone hungry with, the man whose fortune I had helped build. I did not scream or throw the pink shoes at his head. I stepped back, leaving his outstretched hand to close on empty air.

His fingers curled into a fist before dropping to his side. "What is that look for?"

"You want me to decorate a nursery for your mistress."

"I want you to be an adult," he snapped, his patience fraying. "She's carrying my child. We tried for five years, Elena. The doctors said your chances were slim. Am I supposed to give up on being a father just to protect your pride?"

He turned my medical history into a weapon without a second thought. The words struck exactly where he intended.

"So you bring her here," I said, keeping my tone flat. "To the house I designed. The house you gifted me."

"It's a huge estate. There's plenty of room." He rubbed his temples as though I were the one being unreasonable. "Look, Chloe is young. She gets anxious easily. I need her comfortable. You can stay in the west wing. We don't even have to see each other much."

"You expect me to live down the hall from your pregnant girlfriend."

"I expect you to maintain our public image," he said, his tone turning brisk and transactional. "The financing round for the new development closes next month. A divorce right now would tank the deal. You get to keep your title, your black card, and your status. Chloe gets a safe place to have my baby. Everyone wins."

"Everyone wins," I repeated.

"Exactly." He turned toward the full-length mirror to check his collar. "Set up the crib in the east room. Make sure it gets enough morning sun. I don't want her dealing with seasonal depression."

Before I could answer, his phone buzzed. He pulled it from his pocket, his irritated expression instantly melting into a soft, indulgent smile.

"Hey, sweetheart," he murmured into the receiver, his back already turned to me. "No, I'm just sorting out a few details with the staff. I'll be right there."

He pocketed the phone and walked out of the closet. He didn't look back. The heavy bedroom door clicked shut behind him.

Silence settled over the room, broken only by the hum of the central air.

I stood alone among the floral maternity wear. My hands weren't shaking. My vision remained perfectly clear. I reached into my leather tote bag, pushing aside my wallet, my tape measure, and my laser level, until my fingers brushed a thick manila envelope.

I pulled it out. The heavy pages bore a raised seal in the bottom corner.

Ryan thought he owned this house. He thought he owned the empire we built from the ground up. He signed the checks, shook hands with the mayor, and gave the interviews. But he never paid attention to the paperwork. He despised the legalities, leaving all the contract filings to me.

The documents were copyright registrations and design-right assignments for the twelve developments at the core of his company: every blueprint and signature design that had made the firm worth hundreds of millions.

Registered irrevocably in my name.

Those registrations gave me the power to stop him. If I revoked the firm's licenses to use my work, he would face injunctions across all twelve sites. Construction would stall. Investors would flee. The empire he claimed as his own could begin collapsing within days.

I slid the documents back into my bag.

My phone lit the dim closet. I scrolled past Ryan's name and the lead contractors to a contact buried at the bottom of the list.

A name I hadn't dialed in three long years.

Adrian.

My thumb hovered over the screen for a moment. Then, I pressed the green icon.

The line began to ring.
