Chapter 1 of My Husband Asked Me to Leave for His Pregnant Mistress

I heard the key turn in the lock at 6:47 p.m. on a Friday.

I was standing at the sink, washing a mug I hadn't used. My hands were in the water. The apartment smelled like the lemon cleaner I'd run over the counters twice already. I'd been home since four. Waiting.

The door opened.

Dallas walked in first. His jacket was slung over one shoulder. His shoes hit the floor with that heavy, careless thud I'd learned to read like a barometer. But tonight, he wasn't alone.

A woman stepped in behind him.

She was beautiful. Dark hair pulled back, skin glowing under the hallway light. She wore a cream sweater that draped softly over her belly — round, unmistakable, maybe six months along. Her hand rested on it. Protective. Proud.

I stood there, dish soap dripping from my fingers onto the tile.

Dallas set a manila envelope on the counter between us. It landed with a soft slap.

"Ivy," he said. Not a greeting. A summons.

I looked at the envelope. Then at him. Then at her.

She smiled. Not cruel. Just… easy. Like she'd been here before.

"This is Karsyn," Dallas said.

Karsyn lifted one hand in a little wave. "Hi."

I didn't move.

Dallas tapped the envelope with two fingers. "Divorce papers. I need you to sign them."

The words came at me slow, like they had to push through water to reach my ears. Divorce papers. I need you to sign them. As if he were asking me to initial a package delivery.

I looked down at the envelope. My name was printed on a label in the center. Ivy Simmons Grant. I hadn't used my maiden name in three years.

"I'm not asking," Dallas said. His voice had that edge now. The one that used to make me step back. "We've been done for a while. You know that."

I didn't know that.

Or maybe I did. Maybe I'd known for two years. Maybe longer. Maybe I'd known the first time he shoved me into the bathroom door and told me I was too sensitive, that I made everything harder than it needed to be.

Karsyn moved past me, her shoulder brushing mine. She opened the cabinet above the sink — my cabinet — and pulled out a mug. The one with the little ultrasound image printed on the side. A gag gift from a coworker back when I thought I'd need it someday.

She filled it with water from the tap and drank, leaning against the counter like she'd done it a hundred times before.

"You'll need to be out by the end of the month," Dallas said. "The lease is in my name. I'm keeping the place."

I stared at Karsyn. At the mug in her hand. At the way her fingers curled around it, casual and certain.

"I'm pregnant," she said, meeting my eyes. Not apologizing. Just stating a fact. "We're starting a family."

The air in the room felt thin.

I looked at Dallas. At the man I married in a courthouse three years ago because he said big weddings were a waste of money. At the man who told me he loved me exactly once — the night he proposed — and never said it again. At the man whose child I'd carried for nine weeks before he kicked me in the stomach during an argument I don't even remember starting.

I never told him about that pregnancy. I never told anyone.

I looked at the envelope.

"Sign it," Dallas said. "Don't make this complicated."

Karsyn set the mug down on the counter. She ran her hand over her belly again, slow and deliberate, like she wanted me to see it. To understand what I was losing.

I turned off the faucet.

My hands were still wet. I dried them on the dish towel hanging by the sink. The one I'd embroidered with our initials the first month we were married. D.G. + I.S.

I folded the towel.

I looked at Dallas.

"I'm not signing tonight," I said.

His jaw tightened. "Ivy—"

"I need to read it first."

Karsyn laughed softly. Not mean. Just surprised. Like she hadn't expected me to speak at all.

Dallas stepped closer. His voice dropped. "Don't do this."

I picked up the envelope.

I walked past both of them, down the hall, into the bedroom. I closed the door.

I sat on the edge of the bed — my side, the side I'd slept on for three years while he sprawled across the rest — and I stared at the envelope in my lap.

I could hear them in the kitchen. Karsyn's voice, light and laughing. Dallas, lower, saying something I couldn't make out.

I opened the envelope.

The papers inside were clean. Professional. Petition for Dissolution of Marriage. Irreconcilable differences.

I read the words, but they didn't land.

I sat there until the light outside the window went gray, then dark.

When I finally came out, they were on the couch. Karsyn's head on his shoulder. His hand on her knee.

They didn't look up.

I walked into the kitchen. Made myself a cup of tea I didn't drink. Stood at the counter and watched the steam rise.

Something inside me had gone very, very quiet.

Not broken.

Just still.

Like the moment before something falls.

Kisses of Healing, Hearts in Turmoil is a completed werewolf romance on Literiess about Sophia Helvig, a Beta-born omega discarded by her fated mate Santiago Romano for a Luna chosen by his parents. The novel doesn't romanticize the bond — it interrogates it, turning "fated mate" into a mechanism of control rather than destiny. This review covers what the trope delivers, where it gets uncomfortable, and whether it's worth the unlock.
