Chapter 1 of My Fiancé Cancelled Our Wedding to Save Another Woman

The ivory silk of the custom designer gown felt unusually heavy, clinging to my ribs like a beautiful, suffocating cage. Standing on the velvet pedestal of the bridal boutique, I stared at my reflection in the floor-to-ceiling mirrors. Two months until the wedding. Twenty years of history with Cason Grant, culminating in this single, pristine image.

The chime of the boutique’s frosted glass doors shattered the quiet elegance of the room.

I turned, expecting to see my wedding planner. Instead, Cason stood in the entryway. His jaw was set, his shoulders rigid beneath his tailored coat. But it wasn't his posture that made the air in the room suddenly turn to ice. It was the woman clinging to his arm.

Maya Silva. The nurse who had treated him after his car accident last year. She looked small, swathed in an oversized cardigan, her dark eyes wide and damp like a startled deer’s.

"Cason?" I stepped off the pedestal, the train of my gown whispering against the carpet. "What is this?"

He didn't walk toward me. He stayed firmly planted by the door, shielding Maya with his body. "Sydney, we need to halt the wedding preparations. The ceremony is off."

The words hung in the air, disjointed and absurd. The blood drained from my face, a cold prickle sweeping down my spine. "Excuse me?"

"It’s temporary," Cason said, his voice adopting that patronizing, authoritative cadence he used when he thought he was the smartest man in the room. "Maya is in trouble. Her family owes a massive debt to some very dangerous people. The loan sharks are threatening her life. The only way to grant her my full legal and financial protection is to marry her."

I stared at the man I had loved since childhood, searching his face for a punchline. There was none. Only the arrogant gleam of a man high on his own savior complex.

"You want to cancel our wedding—the wedding we’ve been planning for a year—to marry another woman?" My voice was dangerously quiet.

"It’s just a piece of paper, Syd!" Cason ran a hand through his hair, exasperated. "I’ll divorce her the second the debt collectors are dealt with. You just need to be reasonable and wait for me."

Behind his shoulder, Maya let out a soft, trembling sniffle. "I’m so sorry, Miss Walker. I didn’t mean to ruin anything. Cason is just… he’s my only hope."

Cason turned his head slightly to offer her a comforting, protective gaze. In that fraction of a second, when his eyes were averted, Maya looked at me. The trembling doe-eyed victim vanished. The corners of her mouth twitched upward into a sharp, triumphant smirk.

The heat of absolute betrayal flared in my chest, burning away the shock. They were making a fool of me. Cason was tossing aside a lifetime of loyalty to play the hero for a woman who was playing him.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. The aristocratic poise drilled into me since birth snapped into place like armor. I reached for my left hand and gripped the five-carat custom diamond ring.

"Sydney, come on," Cason sighed, taking a step forward. "Don't make this harder than it has to be."

With a sharp tug, the platinum slid over my knuckle. I closed the distance between us, my silk skirts snapping around my ankles. I stopped inches from him, grabbed his wrist, and dropped the heavy ring into his palm.

"I don't do temporary, Cason," I said, my voice as cold and smooth as glass. "And I certainly don't do backup. We are done."

Cason’s smug confidence faltered. He stared at the ring in his hand, his face pale. "Syd, you’re overreacting—"

"Have a beautiful life, Maya," I cut him off, not sparing the nurse a second glance. "He's your problem now."

I walked out of the boutique without looking back, leaving the doors swinging in my wake.

Seventy-two hours later, the media circus was deafening. My phone vibrated endlessly with Google alerts and pitying texts from New York's elite. To them, I was the jilted heiress. To my family's board of directors, I was a liability.

I needed to shut the door on Cason Grant permanently, and I needed to do it with undeniable finality.

Rain lashed against the arched windows of the Bennett estate's mahogany-paneled study. Across the antique desk sat Eleanor Bennett, a woman whose warmth was as deeply ingrained as her old money. She smelled of Earl Grey and quiet power.

"You've been put through the wringer, my dear," Eleanor said softly, her perceptive eyes scanning my exhausted posture. "I wouldn't offer this if I didn't think it would benefit us both."

Between us sat a stack of legal documents. A marriage certificate.

Malachi Bennett, her eldest son. The media painted him as a tragic figure—a brilliant heir confined to the penthouse, slowly dying of a terminal, chronic illness. He needed a wife to finalize his inheritance and quiet the board; I needed an impenetrable shield against the public humiliation Cason had inflicted upon me.

"He is a quiet man, Sydney," Eleanor added gently. "He won't demand anything of you. Only your name on this paper."

My fingers hovered over the gold fountain pen. I thought of Cason’s arrogant command to *wait for him*. I thought of Maya’s smirk.

I picked up the pen. The scratch of the nib against the thick parchment felt like a declaration of independence. I signed my name, trading the ghost of my childhood sweetheart for a dying stranger, and finally exhaled.
