Chapter 1 of My Ex Ignored My Calls While My Mother Died

I felt him before I saw him. That's the only way I can describe it—a shift in the air, like when lightning is about to strike. I was standing near the concierge desk at The Meridian, checking my phone for Damari's message about dinner plans, when the hair on my arms stood up. Someone was watching me. I knew that stare. I'd felt it once before, five years ago, when my world collapsed into a single, unbearable moment.

I turned slowly, and there he was—Kellen Myers. He stood in the grand lobby of the hotel, Tiffany Ray draped on his arm like an expensive accessory. His eyes widened as they locked with mine, but it wasn't recognition that flashed across his face. It was something worse: pity, mixed with the smug satisfaction of a man who believed he'd risen above his past. He thought I was the help.

I should have felt something—rage, perhaps, or the sharp sting of old wounds reopening. Instead, I felt nothing but a cold, clear stillness. The kind that comes when you've already survived the worst thing that could happen to you. I turned back to the concierge, completing my inquiry about the evening's event schedule as if Kellen Myers were nothing more than a ghost. Because that's all he was to me now.

Later that night, as our car glided through Manhattan's evening lights toward our Upper East Side townhouse, my phone buzzed. The number was familiar—one I'd deleted years ago but would recognize anywhere. My thumb hovered over the notification for a moment before I opened it.

*Kellen Myers: Hey. Saw you at The Meridian today. You look... well, considering. Remember that silver bracelet I left you? You should pawn it. Might be worth something by now. Just trying to help. :)*

I stared at the message until the words blurred. Five years, and he still couldn't see me clearly. He thought he was being magnanimous, charitable even. The smiley face at the end was the final insult—a punctuation mark on his delusion that he had any right to speak to me at all.

I pressed my thumbnail hard into my palm, the small pain grounding me. Then I put my phone face-down and looked out the window at the city lights. Damari would be home soon. Millie would be asleep in her bed with her stuffed rabbit. That was my reality now. Kellen's text was nothing but an echo from a life I'd left behind.

Days passed. I didn't respond. Perhaps that was what emboldened him. Or perhaps some men simply cannot accept that they no longer matter. Whatever the reason, Kellen and Tiffany decided to make their move.

I was crossing The Meridian's lobby again—this time to meet Quinn for lunch—when I saw them approaching. Tiffany's heels clicked against the marble floor like tiny hammers, her smile sharp as a blade. Kellen followed, arms crossed, wearing the expression of a man who believed his presence alone was a gift.

"Still chasing men above your pay grade?" Tiffany's voice cut through the lobby's ambient noise as her manicured fingers flicked my lapel. The gesture was deliberately intimate, designed to humiliate. "Some people just don't learn."

Kellen stood behind her, nodding slightly, as if her cruelty were a performance he was reluctantly enjoying. Around us, hotel guests and staff paused, sensing the confrontation. I felt the familiar heat of blood rushing to my face, but I kept my expression neutral. I had learned long ago that men like Kellen fed on visible pain.

Then I heard it—the soft chime of the private elevator. The doors slid open, and Damari stepped into the lobby. He moved with that particular confidence of a man who owned not just the building but the very air inside it. His eyes found mine immediately, then shifted to Kellen and Tiffany with the cool assessment of someone cataloging insects.

He crossed the distance between us in unhurried strides, his hand coming to rest on the small of my back with the easy familiarity of possession. "My wife," he said, his voice carrying just enough for those nearby to hear. Then he turned to Kellen and Tiffany, his tone dropping to something almost gentle. "You have sixty seconds to apologize before my legal team makes your lives very uncomfortable. I suggest you use them wisely."

The lobby fell silent. Kellen's face drained of color. And in that moment, I realized that some ghosts don't just haunt you—they destroy themselves when they finally see the light.
