My Dead Sister's Husband Loved Me First Summary

Chapter 1 of My Dead Sister's Husband Loved Me First

I skipped my sister Mara's wedding because the groom was the cowboy I had almost stayed in Montana for.

Three years later, Mara was dead, my mother was in the hospital, and I had nowhere to stay except Caleb Ryder's failing ranch.

The second I stepped onto the porch, four-year-old Rosie ran into my arms and screamed, "Mommy!"

Caleb tore her away so fast my shoulder burned.

"Do not let her turn you into a replacement, Lena," he said.

I promised I would not.

Then I helped him save a winter cattle contract, showed Rosie photographs of the mother she was forgetting, and watched Caleb start saying my name like it hurt.

During a blizzard, he kept me alive in a remote line shack, and for one reckless second I believed he finally saw me instead of Mara.

Then I found my sister's unsent letters hidden beside an old rodeo photograph of Caleb that I had taken before they ever met.

"Did Mara know you met me first?"

"Yes."

"Did she know you loved me?"

"She knew before she ever asked me out."

Lena's POV

The screen door slammed open before I even cut the engine of my rental car. A tiny figure bolted down the porch steps, her bare feet slapping against the dusty wood.

"Mommy!"

Small arms locked around my knees. The shout froze the blood in my veins. I had just driven straight from the county hospital, where my mother Evelyn lay hooked to a heart monitor. I had not stepped foot on Ryder Ranch in three years.

Heavy work boots pounded the wooden steps. Caleb reached us in three strides. He hooked his hands under the four-year-old's arms and hoisted her into the air, breaking her grip on my jeans.

"She is Aunt Lena," Caleb stated, his voice hard enough to strike a match against. "Not Mommy."

Rosie blinked, her big eyes—Mara's eyes, my eyes—swimming with confusion. She reached a hand out toward me.

"No, Rosie," Caleb interrupted, stepping back. He shifted his gaze to me. "Don't let her use you as a replacement."

I kept my mouth shut. Ten months ago, Mara died in a blizzard on the interstate. Her final phone call still sat in my voicemail, unheard, an unanswered plea I would never erase. Caleb only let me stay here because the hospital had no nearby lodging, and Evelyn begged him to give me a bed.

We walked into the kitchen. Mara lived everywhere. Rosie's plastic cup on the counter bore my sister's neat handwriting in permanent marker. A patched denim jacket hung by the door. A yellow pencil sat by the feed ledger, chewed at the end exactly the way Mara used to ruin her school supplies.

"Put your bags in the guest room at the end of the hall," Caleb ordered, setting Rosie down.

Before I grabbed my suitcase, Rosie grabbed my hand. She dragged a heavy leather-bound album off the coffee table and dropped it at my feet.

"Did Mommy smile like this?" she asked, pointing a sticky finger at a faded Polaroid.

I sank onto the rug. I did not reach out to hold the little girl. I just stared at the picture of my sister sitting on a tractor.

"That is her feeding the barn cats," I replied. "See the gray tail behind the tire?"

Rosie leaned closer to the page. "Did she like cats?"

"She loved them. She used to sneak saucers of milk out of the kitchen when Evelyn wasn't looking."

Caleb leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed over his flannel shirt. He watched me turn the pages. He offered no thanks.

"She gets nightmares," Caleb warned, his tone flat. "Don't give her false hope."

I flipped to another page, showing Mara holding a blue ribbon at the county fair. "Telling her who her mother was doesn't mean I am trying to be her."

His jaw tightened, but he did not argue. The hostility shifted, settling into a rigid, defined boundary between us.

Before dinner, Caleb's phone rang. He took it in the kitchen, pacing the worn linoleum floor.

"That price doesn't even cover the winter feed," Caleb barked into the receiver. "The barn roof took half our operating budget. You need digital assets for the spring contracts? I am running a ranch, not a photography studio."

A pause. Caleb rubbed the back of his neck.

"I do not have updated aerial shots. The snow just melted. Fine. I will figure it out."

He ended the call and tossed the phone onto the scarred oak table. It slid and hit the salt shaker.

"I will shoot the new portfolio," I offered, pulling out a chair. "I have my gear in the trunk. I will photograph the herd and the horses between my hospital visits."

Caleb let out a harsh laugh. He braced both hands on the table, leaning closer.

"You wouldn't even come to Mara's wedding, and now you want to play savior with a camera?"

The three-year-old scar ripped open.

"You think I wanted to watch her marry the guy I almost kissed a month before?" I shot back, gripping the edge of the table. "She always had to win whatever someone else touched."

"At least I will stay," Caleb echoed Mara's exact words from our final fight. "That is what she told you, right? And she did. You ran."

I looked away. I had not spoken a single kind word to my sister after she mailed that invitation.

"It is not pity. It is business," I retorted. "You need high-resolution images to secure the spring contracts. You do not have the budget to hire a professional out here, and I am already staying under your roof."

"Keep your pity," he snapped. "We do not need it."

At midnight, a high-pitched wail tore through the quiet house.

I threw off the heavy quilt and stepped into the hallway. I found Caleb pacing the floorboards, bouncing a thrashing Rosie against his chest.

"I forgot her face!" Rosie sobbed, burying her head in his shoulder. "I forgot what Mommy looks like!"

"Shh, I have got you," Caleb murmured low reassurances, but the panic in Rosie's voice only grew.

I stepped back into my room and grabbed my camera. I jogged back to the hall and powered it on. I did not point the lens at the crying child. Instead, I scrolled back through years of archived digital files until I found a candid shot from a summer fair.

"Rosie, look." I held the glowing screen up.

She peeked over Caleb's shoulder, her tears catching in her eyelashes.

"When your mom smiled, she got a dimple right here on the left side first," I explained, tapping the glass. "It always showed up before the right one."

Rosie stared at the bright image. Her ragged breathing slowed. "A dimple."

"Just on the left," I confirmed.

She rested her chin on Caleb's collarbone. "Okay, Aunt Lena."

Caleb stopped pacing. The rigid lines around his mouth softened for a fraction of a second. Then he blinked, and the stone walls slammed back into place.

He carried Rosie back to bed without another word.

I retreated to the kitchen. I opened my leather work notebook and wrote down the buyer's demands I had overheard: spring contracts, aerial herd shots, barn inventory.

Caleb walked in a few minutes later. He stopped at the opposite end of the island.

"She is asleep," he said quietly.

"I will take the photos," I told him, sliding my pen into the spiral binding. "I will hand over the files. Once my mother's heart rate stabilizes, I am leaving."

Caleb stared at the notebook, then up at my face. "Why are you doing this? Why help this family now?"

"Because I owe Mara an apology I will never get to make." I placed my camera face down on the table with a sharp click. "But I will not use you and Rosie to pay it back."

Underneath the camera, the open notebook displayed the embossed logo of the very livestock acquisition firm Caleb had just fought with on the phone, my name printed boldly beneath the title of Lead Media Director.
