Chapter 1 of My Boyfriend Called Me Unworthy Before Marrying My Maid

I bought pad thai and spring rolls from the place on West 72nd that Jace always said was overpriced. I bought them anyway, because it was our anniversary, and I had a small wrapped box in my coat pocket that I'd been hiding for three weeks.

The box held a vintage compass. Brass. The kind you hold in your palm and feel the weight of. I'd found it at an estate sale in the Village and thought of him immediately—Jace, who was always talking about direction, about where he was headed, about the future he was building. I thought it was romantic. I thought he'd laugh and then get a little quiet the way he did when something actually moved him.

I was still thinking about his face when I pushed open the apartment door.

The lights were off except for the kitchen strip. His side of the closet gaped open. Boxes. Brown cardboard moving boxes, stacked in the living room like a small city, taped shut and labeled in his handwriting. His guitar was gone from the corner. The framed photo of us at Montauk—the one I'd had printed and hung myself—was gone, leaving a pale rectangle on the wall.

I stood in the doorway with the takeout bag in my hand and the cold October air still on my back and I didn't move.

Then my phone buzzed.

A push notification from one of those Manhattan society accounts I'd never bothered to unfollow. I looked down.

The photo loaded slowly, the way bad news always seems to.

Jace in a dark suit. His smile—the one I knew, the one I had believed in for three years—aimed at a camera like he'd been smiling at cameras his whole life. His arm around a woman in a gown. The caption read: *Manhattan's newest power couple—Jace Wagner and Campbell heiress celebrate their engagement.*

I enlarged the photo.

The gown was ivory with hand-beaded detailing along the bodice, a custom piece, one of a kind. I knew every bead on it. I knew it because I had stood in a fitting room in Paris and watched a seamstress sew those beads on by hand. It lived in a garment bag in my private closet at the Campbell estate on the Upper East Side—the estate where almost no one knew I was anything more than a quiet girl who visited her family on weekends.

The woman wearing my dress was Lilia Morgan.

I knew her face. Of course I knew her face. I had been looking at her scholarship updates for five years. Progress reports, transcripts, a photo from her graduation that someone on my foundation's staff had forwarded without knowing why I'd asked for it. Lilia Morgan, twenty-three years old, daughter of the Campbells' head housekeeper and groundskeeper. A girl I had chosen personally from a pool of applicants because her essay talked about her parents' sacrifices in a way that felt true rather than performed. I had named her scholarship fund 'Late Sunshine.' I had written her letters. I had arranged for her parents to be hired at the estate so her family could stay together while she finished school.

She was wearing my dress. Standing next to my boyfriend. Smiling at my life.

I was still standing in the doorway when I heard his key in the lock.

Jace came in and stopped when he saw me. For half a second something crossed his face—not guilt, not exactly. More like mild inconvenience.

'You're here,' he said.

'I live here,' I said.

He moved past me toward the boxes. 'I was going to text you.'

I set the takeout on the counter. The bag made a soft sound. 'When?'

'Tonight. Tomorrow.' He shrugged. He was already lifting a box. 'Look, Novah. Three years was good. It was nice. But you have to know you were never really in my league.' He said it the way you'd say the weather was changing. Informational. 'I've found someone who actually matches where I'm going. Real connections. Real wealth. You should honestly be grateful for the time we had.'

He picked up two boxes and walked out.

He didn't look back.

I heard the elevator open and close.

I stood in the kitchen for a while. The spring rolls were getting cold. The compass was still in my pocket. I took it out and set it on the counter next to the bag and looked at both of them for a long moment.

Then I sat down on the bare floor, back against the cabinet, and I stayed very still.

I didn't cry. I noticed that. I was waiting for it, the way you wait for a wave to knock you down, but it didn't come. What came instead was something quieter. Colder. It moved through my chest like water finding the lowest point in a room.

After a while I got up and opened my laptop.

I looked at the photo again. My dress. My boyfriend. Her face.

I thought about the letters I had written her. I thought about her parents, who had a key to every room in my family's estate. I thought about Jace's hand on his watch—the expensive one he bought on credit—and how he touched it every single time he told me he loved me.

I started making a list.
