Chapter 1 of My Boyfriend Announced His Pregnant Mistress at the IPO

I stood near the front of the rooftop venue in a navy silk dress. Simple. Elegant. Not too much. The Manhattan skyline glittered behind the stage, and the crowd of investors and tech elites filled the space with expensive cologne and louder laughter. I felt proud. Quiet proud. The kind that sits warm in your chest and doesn't need to announce itself.

Kaden stood at the podium in a charcoal suit I'd helped him pick out last month. The lights caught his face just right. He looked like he belonged there. He did belong there. I'd made sure of it.

He thanked the investors. He thanked the board. He made a joke about the early days in that cramped Brooklyn co-working space, and everyone laughed. I smiled. I knew that story. I'd lived it with him.

Then he paused. His hand went to his cufflinks. A small adjustment. He did that when he was about to say something important.

"But there's one more person I need to thank tonight," he said.

My heart lifted. Finally.

"Someone who reminds me every day why I do this. Why I fought so hard to get here."

He extended his hand toward the side of the stage. Not toward me.

A woman stepped into the light. White dress. One hand resting on the curve of her pregnant belly. Dark hair falling in perfect waves. She smiled like she'd been waiting for this moment her entire life.

Ariella Fox.

"I'm thrilled to announce," Kaden said, his voice warm and steady, "that Ariella has agreed to be my wife."

The crowd erupted. Applause crashed over me like a wave. People stood. Champagne glasses lifted. Camera flashes went off in bursts of white.

I stood completely still. My hands were at my sides. My face was still arranged in the smile I'd been wearing a moment ago. But inside, the ground was dissolving. The air was gone. Everything was falling and I couldn't move.

Someone brushed past me toward the stage. Another person clapped me on the shoulder in passing, not even looking. The noise pressed in from all sides. I watched Kaden pull Ariella close and kiss her. The crowd cheered louder.

I turned. Walked. One foot in front of the other. I didn't know where I was going. Just away.

I found a hallway behind the main venue. Dimly lit. Quieter. I pressed my back against the wall and tried to breathe. My thumb dug into my index finger. Hard.

Footsteps clicked toward me. Heels on marble.

"Ashlyn, dear."

Mrs. Carr appeared around the corner. Cream suit. Pearls. The same pleasant expression she always wore when she wanted something.

"I'm glad I caught you," she said. Her voice was smooth. Practiced. "I wanted to speak with you privately before you left."

I stared at her. My throat was tight.

"I know tonight was... unexpected," she continued. She tilted her head slightly, like she was offering sympathy. "But you have to understand. Kaden needs a certain kind of partner now. For his public image. You understand."

I didn't answer.

"But he still cares for you, dear. Very much." She stepped closer. Her perfume was too strong. "There's no reason you can't continue to be part of his life. Discreetly. He values you. Just not... publicly."

The words landed. I heard every single one.

She was asking me to be his secret.

Something cold and clear settled over me. I looked at her. Really looked at her. At the smooth certainty in her face. The complete absence of shame.

"No," I said.

Her smile faltered. "I'm sorry?"

"I said no." My voice was quiet. Steady. "I'm not interested in being discreet. Or part of his life. Or anything you're pretending to offer me right now."

Her expression hardened. "You're being emotional. You should think carefully—"

"I am thinking carefully," I said. "And I see exactly who you are. Who he is. I see all of it now."

I pushed off the wall and walked past her. She said something behind me. I didn't hear it. I didn't care.

I made it halfway to the elevator before Kaden found me.

"Ashlyn. Wait."

I stopped. Turned. He was alone. No Ariella. No crowd. Just him.

"I need you to understand," he said. His voice was softer now. Almost gentle. "This isn't about you. You've been amazing. You've given me everything. But I need more now. I need—"

"A real family," I finished. My voice was flat.

He hesitated. Then nodded. "Yes. You know I want that. I've always wanted that. And you... you can't give me that. You never could."

The hospital. The rain. His arms around me. His voice breaking as he swore he'd never need children as long as he had me.

That memory turned to ash in my chest.

"We're done," I said.

"Ashlyn—"

"We're done, Kaden."

I walked into the elevator. The doors closed. He didn't follow.

I drove back to Brooklyn in silence. The city blurred past the windows. I parked in front of the brownstone and sat in the car for a long time. My hands were still on the wheel. My gala dress felt like a costume.

Finally, I went inside.

The kitchen light was on. I sat at the table. Didn't take off my coat. Didn't move. My thumb pressed into my finger until it hurt.

Footsteps on the stairs. My mother appeared in the doorway in her robe. She looked at me. Didn't ask a single question. Just crossed the room and sat down beside me.

She pulled me into her arms. I broke.

I cried until there was nothing left. She held me the entire time. Didn't speak. Just held me.

Somewhere in the hallway, I heard my father's voice. Low. My brother answered. Neither of them came in. They just stood there. Waiting.

When I finally stopped, my mother got up and filled a glass with water. Set it in front of me. Then she made tea. Put bread in the toaster. Small, quiet actions that said I'm here without words.

I drank the water. Ate the toast. My hands stopped shaking.

My father appeared in the doorway. He didn't say anything. Just looked at me with an expression I'd never seen before. Grief. Fury. Love. All at once.

"We're with you," he said. "Whatever you need. We're with you."

Benedict stepped up beside him. His jaw was tight. His hands were in his pockets. "Always," he said.

I nodded. I couldn't speak yet. But I nodded.

And in that kitchen, surrounded by my family, I felt the first fragile thread of something that wasn't quite strength yet. But it would be.

Soon.
