Chapter 1 of My Alpha Rejected Me Before the Entire Pack

Jaxon's voice cracked at 9:47 p.m., right in the middle of the vow he had made me wait seven years to hear.

"I, Jaxon Pierce, Alpha of Iron—"

He stopped. His nostrils flared. His head turned toward the crowd like something on a string had yanked it.

I felt the scent before I understood it. Wild jasmine. Rain. Sweet and cold and completely wrong for the ceremony hall, which was supposed to smell like burning cedar and my mother's old ceremonial oil. Two hundred pack members had crowded onto the stone floor beneath the torches. My hand was in Jaxon's. My cloak — the Luna cloak I had stitched the trim on myself, because no one had done it for me — brushed the back of my calves.

Jaxon dropped my hand.

"Lana."

His voice broke around the word like it was air after drowning.

A woman stepped out from the third row. Small. Pale. Trembling in a way that photographed well. Her eyes were on him, and only him, and she was crying already, which I noted with the strange clinical calm of a woman about to be struck by a car.

Jaxon turned back to me.

He did not look confused. He looked relieved.

"I, Jaxon Pierce, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack, reject you, Penelope Hart, as my mate and future Luna."

The hall went so quiet I could hear the torches breathe.

Something inside my chest — the half-bond, the almost-thing, the promise he had let me wear on my neck for seven years without ever sealing — pulled taut. Then snapped. It didn't feel like a break. It felt like silver wire drawn slowly through the meat between my ribs, and then out the other side, and then I could not feel anything at all.

My wolf made one small sound. Like a door closing.

Then she was gone.

My knees hit the stone. The phantom scar on my neck — that pale ghost impression where a mark had never been — went cold as an ice cube pressed to the skin. Somewhere far away a woman gasped. Somewhere closer, Lana made a sound like a wounded bird, and I heard Jaxon murmur, "It's all right, it's all right," but he was not saying it to me.

I pressed my thumb into the inside of my opposite wrist. Hard. The old gesture. The one I did not notice anymore.

One. Two. Three.

I stood up.

My legs held. That surprised me. I had time to be surprised, which meant I was still functioning, which meant this was survivable in the technical sense. I looked at Jaxon. He was already looking at her. His hand had lifted toward her cheek without any awareness of the gesture, and I understood then, with a clarity so cold it felt clean, that he had been waiting for this permission for a long time.

I did not speak.

I turned. I walked. Two hundred witnesses parted for me like I was contagious. Somebody — I think Mara, our healer — reached for my sleeve, and I did not slow down. The torches guttered as I passed under them. My cloak dragged. I let it drag.

I walked out the doors of the ceremony hall, across the gravel courtyard, and I did not look back.

---

Buster was waiting on the porch of the pack house, sitting exactly where I had left him, tail thumping once when he saw me. His eyes went from my face to my throat and back, and the tail stopped.

"Come on, buddy," I said. My voice came out normal. That was interesting.

I put him in the passenger seat. I did not pack a bag. I took the keys off the hook. I got in the car.

Half the pack tried to reach me through the mind-link on the way down the mountain — I could feel them scratching at the inside of my skull, one after another, urgent, apologetic, curious, cruel. I closed every door. Every single one. My wolf was not there to help me do it and I did it anyway.

Somewhere in the second hour, on a black road with no lights, I opened the glove compartment. My fingers found the Luna Accord before my brain did. The cover was soft from seven years of handling. I set it on my thigh. I did not open it.

I drove.

Buster put his head on my knee.

---

Dawn came gray and thin over the Council territory. I checked into a small inn with cash. I brewed suppressant herbs at the kitchenette burner — bitter, familiar, the smell of a woman hiding — and drank the whole cup standing up. Whatever was silent inside me stayed silent. That was fine. That could be managed.

I opened the Accord to Article 7, Subsection C, which I had annotated in blue ink in my own handwriting three years ago because I had, apparently, been preparing for this without knowing it.

Any she-wolf who won territory in combat retains sovereign claim independent of mate-bond status.

I took the eastern-boundary map out of my bag. My handwriting. My lines. My land.

I started annotating the claim before breakfast.

---

Emory Dunn knocked at 11:47 the next morning. He did not wait for me to invite him in. He set a file box on my kitchen table — heavier than it looked — and lifted the lid. Seven years of territorial records. Alliance letters. Training logs. All of it in my handwriting.

He sat down. He looked at me. He said, "Tell me what you need."

Outside the window, my phone lit up with Jaxon's name for the twenty-third time.

I turned it face down.
