Chapter 1 of My Alpha Rejected Me and Called Me a Traitor

The bond broke at 9:47 on a Friday night, in front of three hundred people.

I know the time because I had been watching the clock all evening. Nine years of waiting had made a clock-watcher out of me. The hall was dressed in candles and white linen. I wore the dress I had saved since spring. I stood at the threshold with my chest open like a door I had finally stopped holding shut.

Trevor stood at the head table and raised his glass.

"I, Trevor Evans, Alpha of Ironvale, reject you, Camila Parker, as my mate."

He said it word by word. Not fast. He had practiced it.

My mark went hot for one heartbeat, then cold, then hollow — like a door closing in an empty room with the lights going off behind it. My knees hit the stone floor. Somewhere under my ribs my wolf threw back her head and howled once, a sound like glass breaking underwater, and then she went quiet. Not asleep. Gone.

Nine years of devotion, and I got a sentence.

Trevor turned to Stormi Hayes, who was already at his side with her throat tilted just so. He put his mouth to her neck and bit down.

Half the hall broke into applause. She had arranged that. I knew she had — the way I had always known about the dawn emergencies and the mind-links buzzing through our private dinners and the gardenia that sat on his jacket after "pack business." Her scent had been layered over his skin for years. I just hadn't let myself name it out loud.

I heard the warriors behind me shift their weight. Boys I had trained at fifteen. Elder Ruth, who had stood beside me at my mother's grave. Nobody came to me. I understood something then, clean as surgery: I had never been theirs. I had only been useful.

I catalogued the pain the way I catalogue injuries — the burn high in my chest, the cold spreading into both arms, the copper taste at the back of my throat. Then I stopped cataloguing it and stood up.

I walked to the head table. My legs were bad, but they carried me.

The pendant sat against my collarbone on a thin chain. Trevor gave it to me in my first year with no title attached to it, which should have told me everything I needed. My fingers closed around it and pulled until the chain snapped.

I set it on the table in front of him. I didn't throw it. I placed it.

"Camila." His chin lifted that precise half inch, the tell every wolf in the hall had learned to read. "Do not make a scene. Leave quietly. Go home."

Alpha tone came off him like heat off asphalt. It pressed on my spine, my shoulders, the base of my skull. Sit down. Be small. Watch us.

I held his eyes and did not flinch, the way I always had — and it rattled him. I saw the flicker of it behind the command. He had gotten exactly what he wanted tonight, and his rejected mate could still stand there looking at him with a dead wolf in her chest.

"Nine years of my work is standing in this room," I said. My voice came out quiet, which is worse than shouting. "The treaties. The north fence. The warriors who held it in April. Remember who did it, because I won't be here to remind you."

Nobody answered. Stormi's hand drifted up to the Luna pendant at her throat, and she smiled at me the way you smile at a waiter.

I turned my back on all three hundred of them and walked out.

I didn't run. Running would have given them something to watch.

My truck was where I left it. I drove out of town with the radio off — past the gas station, past the turnoff to the training field, past nine years of my life. I kept waiting to cry and it didn't come. What came instead was a flat, strange clarity, like someone had wiped a fogged window in front of my face.

In my coat pocket were my own copies of nine years of Ironvale alliance correspondence. Every treaty draft. Every border concession. Every letter I had written and filed myself. I hadn't grabbed them on the way out — I had kept them for years, out of the bone-deep habit of never living in a territory whose weaknesses I didn't already understand.

I reached the border at midnight.

The line runs through a stand of pines where the fence ends and the trees take over. There is nothing to see there. That is the point. Every wolf still knows where their land stops.

I stepped over it.

The last of the pack bond came off my skin like a wet coat. It didn't hurt. That was the worst part — it simply went, and the place where it had lived was clean and empty, and I stood in the freezing dark with nothing at all holding me to anything.

Then something moved. Low and deep, underneath the empty place. Not the wolf who had howled and died. Older than her. Bigger than her. It rolled over once and settled like a mountain shifting in its sleep.

My eyes flared in the truck's side mirror — pale silver-white, there and gone.

I blinked. It was my own face again.

I should have driven on. Instead I looked back once, which I had promised myself I wouldn't do.

The pack house windows were still lit. In the study on the second floor somebody had cracked a window against the candle smoke. Stormi stood there with a phone pressed to her ear, one hand on her hip, her mouth moving around a word.

Sound carries on cold air. I heard it.

"...Thornridge."
