Chapter 1 of My Alpha Mated the Woman Who Poisoned Me

The mark on my neck went cold at 8:47 on a Saturday night, right between the second course and the toast.

I know the time because I'd just checked Cassius's watch when he stood up. I thought he was going to thank Eleanor for her seventy years. I thought he was going to lift his glass and say her name with that careful warmth he saved for the front rows.

Instead, he said mine.

"I, Cassius, Alpha of Ironveil, reject you, Rachel, as my mate and Luna."

The words landed before my brain caught them. My hand was still on my wine glass. Three hundred wolves went silent in the way only werewolves can — not quiet, but listening, every breath pulled back into every chest at once.

The mark under my collar turned to ice. Then it hollowed out. Like a door closing inside an empty room. My wolf — the small, dim thing I'd lived with for twenty-six years — started screaming somewhere behind my eyes, and I couldn't tell if the sound was hers or mine.

"I claim Nova Ramos as my chosen mate," Cassius went on, and his voice did that practiced thing, that resonant Alpha lift. "Effective from this hour."

Nova rose beside him. She was already in white. She'd known what dress to wear.

My knees buckled. The stone under my chair felt too far away and too close at the same time. Warriors I'd sat up with through fevers were watching me. Cira from the south border, whose shoulder I'd stitched after the rogue raid. Old Hollis, whose pup I'd delivered last winter. None of them moved.

I tried to stand. I owed myself that much — to be on my feet when the bond finished snapping.

Then something inside me cracked.

It wasn't a shift the way I'd ever felt one. The few times my old wolf had surfaced, she'd come up slow, almost shy, like a hand pushing through water. This was a fault line. Bone slid sideways. My spine unspooled. I heard my own dress tear and then I heard nothing because the floor split — actually split, a sound like a tree going down — and something enormous tore out of the place I'd been standing.

Silver. I saw silver through eyes that weren't mine yet.

I saw Cassius stagger back from the head table, one hand thrown up, his face draining white. I saw his wolf surface under his skin for one second and then drop — flatten — whimper. The Alpha of Ironveil whimpered.

Every unmated wolf in the hall went to their knees. Not bowed. Dropped. Like their legs had been cut from under them. Plates rattled off the long tables. A goblet rolled across the stone and clinked against the boot of a Delta who was staring at me with his mouth open and tears on his face.

My new wolf stood in the wreckage of the floor and breathed.

She was twice the size of any wolf I'd ever seen in this hall. Her name came to me — not as a sound but as a feeling. Old. Cold. Sure. The first breath before a run in deep snow.

I couldn't hold the form. I didn't know how yet. She let me slide back down into my own skin like she was setting something fragile on a shelf, and I came to on my hands and knees in a torn dress, the stone cracked in a star pattern under my palms.

The mark on my neck was a pale dead scar.

I got up. I had to do it in pieces — shins first, then hips, then the long slow climb of my spine. No one helped me. No one dared. The pack had parted from me like water parts from oil.

I walked.

I didn't look at Cassius. I didn't look at Eleanor in the front row, folding her hands in her lap with that closed, deciding gesture. I didn't look at Nova, whose smile had stopped working halfway through. I felt the silver still humming in the air behind me as I went, and I felt three hundred wolves not breathing.

The Luna quarters were two corridors away. I needed my maps. I needed the alliance ledgers. I needed the things that were mine because I had made them, not because anyone had given them to me.

She was already there.

Nova. In my ceremonial cloak. The white fur sat wrong on her shoulders. She'd layered Cassius's scent over her own skin so thickly I could taste it from the doorway — and underneath it, a faint, chemical sharpness on her fingertips. Bitter. Mineral. The same trace I'd been smelling on the rim of my teacup for four years without knowing what it was.

Wolfsbane.

My new senses laid it down for me in a clean, terrible line, and my knees almost went again — not from grief this time. From the math.

Four years. Every evening. Every cup.

Nova lifted her chin. She'd rehearsed this; I could see her find the line.

"Some wolves," she said, smooth as cream, "are simply born to serve."

I walked past her. I pulled my maps from the desk drawer — the rolled territorial surveys, the alliance notes in my own hand, the ledger of every favor owed to me by every neighboring pack. I left the cloak. I left the rings. I left the framed photograph by the bed.

I didn't give her a word. Words were currency, and she'd already taken enough from me.

I crossed the Ironveil border on foot, just before dawn, with the maps under my arm and the cold burning clean in my lungs. The silver wolf rose inside me and pressed her shoulder against mine from the inside, and for the first time in four years I felt the full size of what I was carrying.

Behind me, somewhere in the dark, I heard a phone start to ring in the Luna quarters.

I didn't turn around.
