Chapter 1 of My Alpha Left Me to Die for His Mistress

The bond broke at 11:47 on a Tuesday night, under a blood moon, in front of three hundred wolves who had come to watch me get marked.

I felt it before he said the words.

Bowen's pine-and-iron scent — the scent I had pressed my face into a thousand times, the scent that had anchored me since I was sixteen years old — shifted. Sharpened. The warmth that always lived underneath it, the warmth that was mine, tilted away from me like a compass needle swinging toward a different north.

Shay's voice came through the mind-link in a trembling rush. Rogues. Her cabin. She was scared.

Of course she was.

Bowen's body went rigid beside me at the altar stone. I watched his jaw tighten. Watched his gaze cut toward the tree line. The ceremonial fire threw orange light across his face and I thought, stupidly, that I had spent seven years memorizing that face — every line of it, every tell — and I had never once seen him look at me the way he was looking at the dark between the trees right now.

He took a step away from the altar.

"Bowen." My voice came out steady. I don't know how.

He stopped. Turned back to face me across the firelit stone with three hundred wolves at his back and the blood moon overhead and the mating braid still woven through my hair. His expression was not cruel. That was almost the worst part. It was resolved.

He said the words.

"I, Bowen Sullivan, Alpha of Silverfang, reject you, Lydia Wagner, as my mate."

The mark on my neck went ice-cold first — a sudden, sickening drop, like plunging your hand into winter water. Then it went empty. Not numb. Empty. Like a room with the door shut and all the furniture gone.

The bond tore through my chest like silver wire pulled through living flesh. One long, bright, unspeakable second of it.

Inside my mind, Essie screamed.

One howl — raw and agonized and furious — and then silence. Complete, absolute silence where she had lived for ten years. The inside of my own head had never felt so large.

I pressed two fingers to my neck. The hollow where the half-formed mark had pulsed with warmth for seven years was cold and still beneath my fingertips. Nothing. No pulse. No trace.

A low murmur moved through the assembled pack. I heard it the way you hear sound underwater — present, distorted, irrelevant.

My hands were shaking. I made them stop.

I reached up and pulled the ceremonial mating braid from my hair. The pins scattered across the altar stone. I held the braid for one breath — braided by my own hands this morning, threaded with silver cord I had saved for three years — and dropped it into the sacred fire.

It caught immediately. The silver cord blackened first, then the whole braid went up in a clean, bright column of flame.

I watched it burn until there was nothing left.

Then I reached into the fold of my ceremonial gown and drew the small ceremonial blade I had carried for the marking ritual. No one moved. No one spoke. Three hundred wolves and the only sound was the fire.

I drew the blade across my palm without hesitating. The cut was clean and deep enough to matter. I pressed my bleeding hand flat against the cold altar stone and felt the blood run into the carved channels of the Moon Goddess's symbol.

My voice came out quiet and absolutely clear.

"I swear before the Moon Goddess and every wolf present — I will never return to Silverfang as Bowen Sullivan's anything. I will never accept Bowen Sullivan again."

The blood hissed where it touched the cold stone. In the front row, Elder Dara Sullivan closed her eyes. Several of the older warriors flinched.

I lifted my hand from the stone. Looked out at three hundred faces in the firelight.

"Bear witness."

Not one of them stopped me as I walked through the crowd toward the tree line.

---

I didn't leave that night. I had nowhere to go.

I sat on my bed in the pack house with my back against the headboard until the sky went gray, and I made myself think clearly. Seven years of running this pack had taught me one thing above everything else: panic is just information you haven't sorted yet.

What did I have?

The silver blade from the armory — I would take it in the morning before Nolan ran his drills. Seven years of warrior injury records memorized completely. The healer wing access codes no one had thought to revoke yet. And one phone number, stored under two initials, that I had never once dialed.

I opened my phone. Found the contact. Stared at it for a long time.

Then I closed the phone.

Not yet. But soon.

I pressed my fingers to the cold hollow on my neck and began to plan.

---

Bowen called me to his office before dawn.

He sat behind his desk with his hands folded and told me, in the tone he used for reassigning patrol routes, that my quarters would be reallocated and I would be moved to the eastern cabin. Temporarily, he said. The word landed like what it was: permanent.

He didn't use Alpha tone. He didn't need to. His certainty that I would simply comply was its own kind of weight.

I looked at him across the desk. The pine-and-iron scent that had once been the center of my world registered now as nothing more than a smell.

"I heard you," I said.

I left his office, walked directly to the armory while Nolan was occupied with morning drills, and took the silver blade from the weapons rack. Strapped it to my thigh beneath my jeans. Walked to the eastern cabin alone.

It was the first thing I had ever taken for myself.

It would not be the last.
