Chapter 1 of I Married the Billionaire I Thought Killed My Father

"Meridian penthouse, tonight’s the night."

The anonymous text message still burned behind my eyes as I crouched in the dark of the dressing room. Through the quarter-inch crack in the double doors, the city below spread out like shattered glass.

Across the suite, the lights were low.

A tall figure stepped into frame against the floor-to-ceiling windows. Damon Steele, head of Steele Media Group. Beside him, actress Vivienne Blake leaned into his chest, her fingers tangling in his tie.

"Damon, please," Vivienne murmured, her voice carrying through the quiet suite. "Someone might see."

"Let them," Damon said.

His voice was a dark, low rasp that scraped against the quiet room. He backed her hard against the glass pane.

My pulse pounded in my ears. I raised my Nikon, setting the shutter to its silent burst mode. This was the shot of my life. One clean frame of Damon Steele breaking his own spotless public record would fetch enough to save everything back home.

*Click. Click. Click.*

Then Damon’s head shifted.

He didn't shove Vivienne away, but his jaw angled toward the shadows. His gaze cut straight over her bare shoulder, past forty feet of empty suite, and slammed directly into the gap of my door.

He wasn't guessing. He was looking straight down my lens.

"Damon?" Vivienne gasped, noticing the shift. "What is it?"

Before I could pull back, Damon spoke without breaking my gaze.

"Bring her out."

The dressing room door behind me burst open with a brutal crack.

Heavy hands grabbed my jacket, hauling me out of my crouch and slamming me face-down into the plush carpet of the main suite. My chin bounced off the floor.

"Get your hands off me!" I yelled, thrashing against the weight pinning my spine.

"Shut up," a bodyguard grunted, twisting my wrist until my fingers gave up their grip.

The strap tore away. My camera was gone.

"Careful with the glass," Damon's voice drifted down from above.

Footsteps approached, stopping an inch from my face. Vivienne was already gone, hustled out through a side entrance.

"Let me up," I ground out, spitting carpet fibers.

"Nora Hayes," Damon read aloud, his tone clipped. "Hard-hitting bylines. City Hall exposés. And a paper being kept alive by the man who raised you after your father died."

The bodyguard hauled me to my knees, holding my arms behind my back.

Damon crouched before me. His charcoal suit didn't show a single wrinkle. He held my camera between two fingers, toggling through the memory card with his thumb.

"You've been busy, Nora," he said, turning the LCD screen toward my face.

It stopped on a crisp shot taken three days ago: a city councilman taking an envelope of cash behind an alley dumpster.

"A freelance side hustle," Damon continued, his tone flat. "Too bad the councilman chairs the zoning board for the building your print shop leases. This photo alone gives him enough leverage to shut *The Metro Post* down by tomorrow morning."

"Give it back," I hissed.

"No," Damon replied softly. "I don't think I will."

Ten minutes later, I sat across from him in the cold glare of the hotel’s private conference room. The mahogany table stretched between us like an executioner’s block.

Damon didn't sit. He tossed a manila folder onto the polished wood.

"Look at it," he commanded.

I kept my hands flat on my thighs. "I don't need to read whatever garbage your fixers compiled."

"Open it, Nora."

I reached out, snapping the folder open.

On top was an overdue invoice from our printing press: eighty-four thousand dollars, sixty days past due. Beneath that lay a hospital printout from St. Jude’s—Uncle Ray’s cardiac stent schedule, marked *Pending Financial Clearance*. And under that, yellowed clippings from thirteen years ago, the headline screaming: *Hayes Group Collapses Into Bankruptcy; Founder Found Dead.*

The paper trembled against my fingertips. I forced my hand flat against the table.

"You like digging up graves, Steele?" I asked, looking up to meet his dark eyes.

"I like knowing what things cost," he countered. "Your publication is drowning. Your father left you ashes, and your guardian is dying because you can't scrape together forty grand for a surgeon."

"And you think a few photos of you feeling up an actress give you the right to hold that over me?" I let out a sharp, jagged laugh. "You researched me before I even stepped foot in that suite. Did you stage this whole thing just to corner me?"

Damon paused.

A flicker of surprise registered in his eyes, vanishing almost instantly behind a cool, assessing stare. His mouth tugged at the corner, just a fraction.

"You're not crying," he observed, leaning against the edge of the table. "Most people in your position start begging within five minutes."

"I don't beg," I snapped. "Especially not from men who hide behind bodyguards."

"Good," Damon said. "I can't stand sniveling employees."

He slid a fresh document across the wood, spinning a heavy metal pen beside it.

"What is this?" I asked.

"Your way out," Damon said. "You hand over the original memory cards and all your backup cloud drives. You sign the non-disclosure agreement regarding tonight. And you sign an employment contract as my personal assistant for one full calendar year."

My breath caught in my throat, but I forced my voice steady. "Your assistant? I'm a journalist."

"You're an unemployed nuisance if you refuse," he said, stepping closer. "Sign it, and Uncle Ray gets his stent next Tuesday morning at the best surgical wing in the city. The print shop's debt disappears tonight. *The Metro Post* stays in business."

"And if I walk out that door?"

"Then your councilman friend gets the files you stole," Damon answered without hesitation. "Your weekly folds by noon. And your uncle dies on a waiting list."

The room seemed to shrink, the air pressing down heavy on my shoulders. He had closed every exit before I even walked into the trap.

"Why me?" I demanded. "You have hundreds of people who would jump off a bridge if you ordered them to. Why drag me into your office?"

"Because you managed to break into my private floor without setting off a single sensor," Damon said, his voice dropping an octave. "And because you're reckless enough to snap a flash in my face. I need someone who doesn't blink."

I stared down at the crisp white paper. The terms were spelled out in cold, black ink.

"What happens after a year?" I asked.

"You're free," Damon said. "Your debts are cleared, your uncle's medical bills are paid, and you walk away with clean hands."

"That's it?"

He leaned down, placing both palms on the mahogany table, bringing his face level with mine.

"That's it," he said softly. "Provided you don't give me a reason to regret letting you leave."

I reached for the pen. The cold metal bit into my skin. Uncle Ray’s face flashed in my mind—his gray, tired skin, his labored breaths when he tried to climb the stairs to the newsroom. I had no choice. There had never been a choice.

I scribbled my name across the dotted line and slid the paper back to him.

"I'll need my camera back," I said.

Damon took the contract, letting his eyes trace over my wet ink before sliding the pen into his breast pocket.

"You won't be needing a camera anymore, Nora," he said, straightening up. "Be at my office at six tomorrow morning. If you're thirty seconds late, we renegotiate the hospital."

He turned and walked toward the exit, his bodyguards falling in behind him.

At the door, he stopped, looking back over his shoulder.

"Welcome to Steele Media," he said quietly, and closed the door between us.
