Chapter 1 of My Husband Kissed Her on Live TV, Then Our Son Called Her Mom

CLAIRE'S POV

The horn was still blaring when I picked up Noah's jacket.

Twenty thousand people were on their feet, screaming, stomping, throwing rally towels into the air like confetti. Down on the ice, my husband's teammates had buried him in a pile near the boards. Mason Bennett had just won his first league championship, and the whole arena sounded like it might come apart.

"Noah, arms," I said, holding the jacket open. "They'll call families down any minute."

My son didn't move. He was pressed against the glass of the family box, nine years old and practically vibrating.

"Mom, look! Dad's on the screen!"

I looked up.

The jumbotron had cut to Mason. His helmet was gone, his dark hair soaked with sweat, his grin so wide it made him look twenty-two again. The camera followed him as he skated away from the pile, away from the trophy, toward the bench.

Toward the family tunnel, I thought. Toward us.

He stopped short of it.

Rachel Moreno was standing just inside the gate in her navy team blazer, headset around her neck, clipboard tucked against her chest. The team's PR director. The woman who'd sent me the email last week about what to wear for tonight's photos.

Mason took her face in both hands and kissed her.

Not on the cheek. Not one of those sloppy, adrenaline-drunk hugs players gave everybody after a big win. He kissed her on the mouth, long and slow, and she rose up on her toes to kiss him back like she'd done it a hundred times.

The arena noise shifted. The cheering didn't stop, but it bent into something else. Whoops. Laughter. A few confused boos.

I stood there holding a child's jacket while my husband kissed another woman forty feet tall on the screen above center ice.

One of the other wives in the box said, "Oh my God," very quietly. Nobody looked at me. That was somehow worse.

Then the box door banged open.

Noah was gone.

"Noah!"

I saw him on the screen before I saw him in real life, sprinting down the tunnel behind a family-services staffer in his sneakers and his dad's jersey, which hung to his knees. He didn't stop when he reached them. He didn't hesitate. He crashed right into Rachel's legs.

And Rachel caught him like it was the easiest thing in the world. She scooped him up, laughing, and Mason ruffled his hair.

A sideline reporter pushed her microphone toward the three of them, clearly sensing the biggest story of the night.

"Noah, buddy, how does it feel to watch your dad win it all?"

"Awesome!" Noah said, breathless. "And Rachel said she can come to more away games with me now."

The reporter's smile froze. She glanced at Mason, then at the camera, like she was waiting for someone to tell her what to do.

Noah wasn't finished.

"Dad said next season she can sit with us. As family."

The arena laughed. Some of them actually laughed.

I didn't feel my legs. I felt the cold glass under my palm and the zipper of Noah's jacket digging into my other hand, and I felt everything I'd been told for six months rearranging itself in my head.

No families on road trips this year, Claire. New team policy.

Mom, can I go with Dad this weekend? Just us. It's a boys' weekend.

I'd packed his bag myself. I'd tucked granola bars into the side pocket and told him to listen to his father.

Rachel had been there. Every time.

And everybody on that ice had known except me.

It took Mason twenty minutes to come up to the box. By then the other families had drifted down for the celebration, and the room was empty except for me, a tray of untouched sliders, and the muted noise of the crowd through the glass.

He came in still in his pads, Noah at his side. My son's hand was wrapped around two of his father's fingers.

Mason didn't apologize. He didn't even say my name first.

"Claire, don't do this tonight."

I stared at him. "Don't do what?"

"Whatever you're about to do." He lowered his voice, glancing back at the hallway. "There are cameras everywhere. It's the biggest night of my career. Can we just get through it?"

"How long has he known?"

His jaw tightened. He said nothing.

Noah shifted closer to his father's hip. His eyes darted to my face and away, and I knew that look. It was the look he got when he'd broken something and hidden the pieces.

I crouched so I was level with him. My voice came out steadier than I expected.

"Noah. Did you know Dad and Rachel were together?"

He picked at the hem of the jersey.

"Sweetheart. Look at me."

"Dad said you'd get mad," he whispered.

The kiss had knocked the air out of me. This took the floor out from under me.

I looked up at Mason. He was studying the carpet.

"How long?" I asked Noah.

He hesitated, then mumbled it.

"Since Christmas."

It was May.

Five months. Five months of my son coming home from boys' weekends and hugging me goodnight. Five months of him sitting across from me at breakfast with that secret in his mouth.

I stood up slowly.

"Okay, that's enough," Mason said quickly. "I never told him to lie to you, Claire. I swear to God. I just didn't want him stuck in the middle of adult stuff."

"You took him on road trips with her."

"That's not—"

"You made him keep your affair a secret." My voice cracked on the word and I didn't care. "You told a nine-year-old his mother would get mad if he told the truth. You already put him in the middle, Mason. You put him there and left him there."

Noah's chin was trembling now. Mason put a hand on his shoulder, and I hated that it was his hand.

"Mr. Bennett?" A young staffer appeared in the doorway, slightly out of breath. "Sorry, they need you on the ice. Championship family photo is starting. Ms. Moreno's waiting at the gate."

Ms. Moreno was waiting at the gate.

Mason actually nodded at him. Then he turned back to me and exhaled, the way he did when I asked him to take out the trash during a game.

"Look. We'll talk at home, okay? All of it. I promise. But right now we need to go down there and take the picture."

Something in me came loose, and I laughed.

It wasn't a nice sound. Mason flinched.

I held out Noah's jacket. After a second, he took it, confused.

Then I twisted my wedding ring off my finger. It stuck at the knuckle, the way it had for eleven years, and I worked it free and set it on top of the folded jacket in his hands.

"No," I said.

"Claire."

"You already have your family photo."

I walked past him into the hallway. The concrete corridor smelled like popcorn and spilled beer, and every screen mounted along the wall was showing the ice.

"Mom!"

Noah's voice cut through the noise behind me, high and scared.

I stopped.

Every part of me wanted to turn around, kneel down, and pull him into my arms. He was my baby. He was nine.

But on the screen above the exit doors, the championship family photo had already started.

Right in the center, under the gold banners and the bright lights, stood Mason, Noah, and Rachel.

Together.

I didn't turn around.
