Chapter 1 of His Bride Paid Me to Watch Them Marry

The perfume was called Verity. That was the joke I couldn't stop chewing on all morning.

I stood at the north end of the atrium in a polyester vest the color of a traffic cone, holding a lacquered tray of paper samplers. Each one was a little white card sprayed with something that smelled like grapefruit and money. Eighteen dollars an hour. Six hours. One hundred and eight dollars before taxes, which meant about ninety after, which meant Adrian's dialysis co-pay for Thursday was still four hundred and ten short.

I did that math maybe thirty times between nine and ten-thirty. It never came out different.

"Would you like to try our new fragrance?"

A woman in a camel coat took a card without looking at me. That's the thing about this job nobody tells you. You're not a person. You're a dispenser with a pulse. I'd learned to stop minding it. Being invisible has a certain safety to it, like standing behind glass.

The atrium was five stories of white marble and cold light. There was a skylight the size of a tennis court up there, and the November sun came through it thin and blue, laying long stripes across the floor. Somewhere a piano played through hidden speakers, that soft placeless jazz they pipe into places where nothing costs less than four hundred dollars. My reflection followed me in the storefronts. Orange vest. Hair scraped back. Ink still under my right thumbnail from last night's job — two hundred place cards for a bat mitzvah in Riverdale, finished at four in the morning, twelve cents a card over what I'd asked because the client's mother liked my flourishes.

My right hand ached in the cold. I flexed it without thinking, the way I always do before I pick up a brush. Middle finger, ring finger, the two calluses I'd had since I was fifteen.

I knew who owned this building. That's the part I never say out loud.

**MATTHEWS VERTICAL** was etched in brushed steel above the east concourse, letters two feet high, kerned by someone who knew what they were doing. I'd seen it the first day the temp agency sent me. I'd stood in front of it for a full minute with my tray, and then I'd taken the shift anyway, because it ran ten to four and my lettering commissions started at six, and because the odds of a man who owned nineteen buildings walking through this particular one on a Tuesday morning were small.

And because — I'll be honest, since there's nobody here to lie to — some ugly, stubborn part of me wanted to stand inside something he built and prove it couldn't touch me.

"Sample?" I said to a man on his phone. He walked through my voice like weather.

At 10:52 the east-wing elevator opened.

It's a private car. Glass and bronze, keyed, comes straight down from the executive floors and lets out behind a velvet rope that the security guys unhook like they're opening a church door. I'd watched it a hundred times. Lawyers, mostly. Men with folders.

This time a woman's laugh came out first.

It hit me before I saw her. High, bright, three notes, ending on the up-slide — a laugh I'd heard across a dorm room, across a hundred late nights, across a plate of cold dumplings at 2 a.m. while she told me everything would be okay.

Karla.

My hands went cold around the tray.

She came out in ivory. Cream coat, cream heels, a scarf the color of raw silk, and her hair done in that soft expensive way that costs three hundred dollars and is designed to look like she rolled out of bed. She had a phone in one hand and a man's arm in the other.

And the man.

God, the man.

He was taller than I remembered, or maybe just held straighter. Charcoal overcoat, no scarf, cuffs showing exactly the right amount. His face had lost the last of its softness — the jaw sharper, the mouth set in a line that didn't look like it opened much. At twenty-five, Westley Matthews had a habit of pushing his hair back with one hand when he was thinking. He wasn't doing that anymore. Now he walked into a room he owned and let the room adjust to him.

"—four hundred is already too many," Karla was saying. "If we cut your father's side we're down to three-sixty, and honestly, sweetheart, half of them only want the photos—"

He wasn't listening. He was scanning the floor.

I knew that scan. It's not a look at people. It's a look at inventory — the shine on the marble, the queue at the coffee kiosk, the maintenance guy on the ladder by the second-floor rail. A landlord's sweep. Left to right. Efficient.

It reached me.

And stopped.

There is a specific quality to being seen by someone who has spent five years hating you. The air goes solid. His eyes didn't widen. His step didn't break. That was the terrifying part — nothing in him moved except something behind his face, something white and compressed, like a fault line finally getting the shift it had waited half a decade for.

I didn't move either. Tray at my waist. Sixteen little white cards, grapefruit and money.

Karla noticed his stillness before she noticed me. Her head turned, following his line. Half a second — I counted it, I actually counted it — and then her mouth opened into a small, soft, sorrowful shape, and her free hand came up to press against her collarbone.

"Oh," she breathed. "Oh, no. Wes. Is that—"

She said my name like she was laying flowers on it.

"Sloane?"

Under the skylight, the light went gray. Somewhere behind me, the piano kept playing.
