Chapter 1 of He Was My Everything, Now I’m His Nightmare

Camilla’s POV

“Camilla, I’m really sorry. I can’t make it tonight. Something came up.”

Leon’s voicemail was short, almost hollow. But what gutted me wasn’t his voice...it was the sound of my twin sister, Cara, laughing in the background.

The phone nearly slipped from my hand as I stared at the anniversary dinner growing cold before me. For three hours, I sat at a candlelit table for two, watching waiters walk past with sympathetic eyes. The sixth anniversary I had spent days planning was ruined.

This morning, I had found a stunning diamond necklace hidden in Leon’s desk, convinced it was my surprise, a sign of our love. How naive I had been.

A waiter approached me, still with that sympathetic smile reserved for abandoned dates, and it felt like salt in the wound.

“Ma’am… we’re closing.”

I smiled back at him as if it didn’t sting, and handed over my card, paying for a dinner I hadn’t even touched. Then I walked into the rain, heels slipping on the wet pavement, and climbed into my car.

I tried calling Leon, but my call went straight to voicemail. My heart raced with a bitter frustration. I threw the car into reverse, the tires screeching on the wet asphalt.

And then... everything snapped.

A monstrous, dark shape truck barreled toward me. A scream tore from my throat as I jerked the wheel, but it was too late. My car spun out of control, crashing into a thick oak tree. The seatbelt slammed me back, my head smacking the window. Blood rushed through my veins as dizziness overwhelmed me. I grabbed my phone and redialed Leon. Voicemail. I tried several times until the phone slipped from my hand and my vision turned black.

I woke to beeping machines and sterile light. A doctor entered quietly, her expression too calm, almost unsettling, as if she’d delivered this news countless times before.

“Mrs. Anders… you were pregnant with twins.”

The words crushed me harder than the crash itself. Pregnant. After years of heartbreak, hope had finally found me. For a single, fragile second, joy sparked until the doctor’s voice broke it apart.

“We lost them. You were unconscious and bleeding heavily. We needed consent for the transfusion… but your husband refused. He ordered the blood for another patient.”

Her words sliced like a blade, each syllable tearing into me. Everything I had ever hoped for slipped away just like that. I stared at her, numb, as her words sank in like ice-cold steel.

“He… what?”

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “By the time blood arrived, it was too late.”

The room tilted. My hands clawed at the sheets, searching for something solid as sobs ripped from me. I didn’t even notice her leaving the room, giving me space to grieve.

Four hours later, Leon walked in with Cara. My breath caught in my throat. Cara stood there - hair dyed to match mine, mole gone, and lips painted in my favorite shade. She looked like a perfect copy of me. And on her neck was the necklace I thought was for me.

“Camilla, it’s good to see you awake. I hope you can be discharged soon,” Leon said while standing so calm beside Cara.

But my eyes were glued to Cara; her smirk was all the confirmation I needed.

We had always been opposites. I was the quiet twin, the dutiful granddaughter. She was wild, unpredictable, and jealous of the fact that our grandfather set his sights on making me his primary heir. But I never imagined her jealousy would come to this.

“You look pale,” Cara said with a sweetness that felt venomous. “But I guess that’s understandable after a crash and all that blood loss.”

“Camilla, for God’s sake, look at me!” Leon snapped; frustration evident in his voice. “Cara’s been worried sick. We even canceled an important meeting for you, and you can’t muster a simple thank you?”

“It’s fine,” Cara said softly, pretending to soothe him. “She’s just tired.”

But Leon’s glare sharpened.

“You’ll apologize. Or I stop paying your hospital bills.”

My heart raced, pounding like a drum in my chest. The weight of the ultimatum hung heavily in the air, but I couldn’t bring myself to apologize. For what? I hadn’t done anything wrong.

But Leon’s expression hardened. And before I could react, he struck me hard. The sharp sting radiated through my cheek, bringing tears to my eyes, but he seemed unfazed. Cara pulled him back with a smug little wink before they walked out together.

The next morning, the doctor suggested a walk. My body felt heavy, but I obeyed. When I reached the OB clinic, my heart sank, and I froze in disbelief. Leon and Cara, leaving the OB clinic, smiled at each other as they held a sonogram. They didn’t even notice me standing there, shattered, and invisible.

“You saved our baby,” Cara whispered, kissing his cheek.

I couldn’t breathe. I followed the two without thinking. And through a slightly ajar door of a hospital room, I saw Cara bent over, her skirt pulled up, her thong down, Leon was naked from the waist down, his hands gripping her hips.

“You love me more than Camilla, don’t you?” she moaned.

“Yes,” Leon breathed. “You’re the best version of her. And you’re giving me a child.”

The words hit me like a punch, and I stumbled back, nausea rising. I fled to my room, limping, but I didn’t stop. Their image lingered in my head. I pressed my back against the door, desperately seeking refuge from the reality that unraveled over me.

Tears streamed down my cheeks as I sobbed, each cry leaving me more numb than the last. I cried until the pain dulled to a hollow ache in the silence of my room.

That night, Leon’s text was cold and commanding: be home tomorrow, clean the house, prepare lunch for him and Cara for the day after tomorrow as my apology. I let it sit, ignoring the words that felt like a slap.

I got discharged early the next day, so I went home and found Leon and Cara chatting in the garage. Their laughter floated through the air, twisting my stomach in knots.

“Does she know?” Cara asked, tinged with concern.

“Even if she did, she’d understand,” Leon replied easily. “I wanted kids. She couldn’t give them. And as for Grandpa’s wealth...she doesn’t need to know I gave the transplant to you. Your health was worth more.”

A heavyweight crashed down on me. My grandfather, Connard Kavannagh, the man who raised me, had died for this—his kidney, his legacy, traded away for Cara. In that moment, all the love I had for Leon evaporated. Anger surged through me, sharp and clear, recalibrating my heart and mind. I didn’t just want to leave him; I craved revenge for every deceitful word, every stolen moment, for every heartbeat of my children and grandfather sacrificed for their benefit.

I grabbed my phone, fingers trembling, and dialed my family attorney.

“This is Camilla Anders,” I said. “I need divorce papers drafted. Today.”
