He Took My Hard-Earned Money to Impress Her

/ 10
I sacrificed my sanity, sleep, and health for a $15,000 commission at Stonebridge & Associates. But when my payout is suddenly wiped to zero, I uncover a sickening betrayal: the man I trusted stole my hard-earned money just to impress another woman. He thinks I'll take this lying down, but he's about to learn how expensive it is to ruin my life.

Chapter 1 of He Took My Hard-Earned Money to Impress Her

The number sat there like a verdict.

Zero.

I blinked at my screen. Then I blinked again, as if my eyes were the problem. The compensation statement for Q3 was open in front of me, white and clinical under the fluorescent hum of the Stonebridge & Associates open floor. Every line added up exactly as it should have—base salary, the small performance bump from February, the standard expense reimbursement. And then the commission line. The one that was supposed to read $15,000. The one I had bled for across three consecutive weeks of all-nighters, of cold takeout containers stacked next to my laptop, of client calls I took at midnight from a bathroom stall at a fundraiser because the deal couldn't wait and neither could I.

Zero.

A hollow, cold thing opened up somewhere beneath my ribs. I didn't move. Around me, the office hummed its usual Tuesday afternoon noise—keyboards, a distant phone, someone laughing too loudly near the coffee station. I kept my eyes on the screen. I kept my hands flat on the desk. I kept my face exactly the way I needed it to be.

I knew how to hold still when something inside me was falling.

I reached out to Pauline in payroll before lunch. We weren't close, but we were cordial—I'd covered for her once during an audit review, and she remembered it. I kept my message light, almost casual. Just a quick question about my Q3 statement. A possible processing error?

Her response came back in under two hours.

No processing error.

The transfer had been authorized at the supervisory level. The full $15,000, redirected from my account to Rylee Medina's. The authorization timestamp was three days ago—the same afternoon I'd submitted my final client report, the one that officially closed the deal.

I read the message twice. Then I closed the email, opened a blank document, and began typing a list of every deliverable I had produced on the Harmon account over the past three weeks. Meeting logs. Draft strategy decks. Client communication threads. Revised proposals. I had copies of all of it. I always kept copies.

Rylee Medina was twenty-four years old and had been at Stonebridge for four months. In those four months, she had missed two internal deadlines, submitted a client brief that contained three factual errors and one paragraph lifted almost verbatim from a public industry report, and cried in a conference room twice—once about her student loans and once about her rent. I knew this not because I tracked her, but because at Stonebridge, very little stayed private for long.

I knew something else, too. Something I had kept locked in a very specific room in my mind since I watched it happen the first time—the way Clark's face changed when she came to him with those stories. The way he leaned forward. The way he became, in those moments, the version of himself that he liked best.

Clark Lawson was my supervisor. He was also, for the past three years, the man I had built a life around in the margins of this office—quietly, invisibly, at his insistence. We kept it professional at work. His words. His reasons. I had told myself those reasons made sense.

I requested a meeting that afternoon.

His office had a glass wall that faced the floor, so I could see him through it before I knocked. He was on the phone, jacket off, sleeves rolled up—that particular pose of practiced ease that I used to think was attractive. He waved me in with a smile.

I closed the door behind me and set the payment records on his desk without a word.

He looked at them. He didn't look surprised.

"I can explain this," he said. His voice was the careful, measured kind. The kind that meant he had already rehearsed this.

"I'd like to hear it."

"Rylee is going through a genuinely hard time, Colette. Her loan payments are past due. She's behind on rent. She came to me in a really vulnerable place, and I had the ability to help her." He paused. "You know how it feels to work hard and still feel like you're drowning. You've told me that."

The way he said it—leaning on my own words, the ones I had said to him in private, in the dark, not for a moment thinking they would one day be used as a lever against me—I felt something in my chest go very, very still.

"That was my commission, Clark."

"I know." He exhaled slowly, like I was the one being unreasonable. "And you're in a strong position. You're stable. You're talented. You'll earn it back next quarter, honestly faster than she ever could. I just thought—"

"You thought you'd give away something that wasn't yours to give."

"It's not that simple." He leaned forward. "We're in this together, right? What's yours is—"

"Don't." The word came out quiet and exactly the right weight. He stopped.

I looked at him. I looked at him the way you look at something you are memorizing before you leave it behind for good. Three years of early mornings and late nights and the careful, deliberate smallness I had made myself to fit inside whatever space he offered me. Three years of being strong enough that he never had to worry about me. Three years of being exactly the woman he had needed me to be, right up until he needed someone who needed him more.

I stood up.

"We're done here," I said. I meant the meeting. I meant more than the meeting.

The team dinner was three days later at a restaurant in the Flatiron District—exposed brick, good wine list, the kind of place that made everything feel more significant than it was. Clark organized it as a celebration. Quarter results, team morale, the usual theater.

I went. I sat at the long table in a dress I had bought before any of this, and I watched Clark raise a glass and talk about Rylee's dedication, her growth, her contribution to the team's collaborative spirit. He used that phrase twice. Collaborative spirit. Rylee tilted her head in that particular way she had—chin slightly down, eyes slightly up—and accepted the praise with what looked, to anyone who wasn't paying close attention, like becoming modesty.

A junior analyst named Dominic, two seats down from me, glanced over and asked what my specific role had been on the Harmon acquisition. He said it genuinely. He actually wanted to know.

Before I could answer, Clark smoothly picked up the thread about Q4 projections, and the table turned with him, the way tables do when the most senior person in the room decides to change the subject.

I set my fork down.

I didn't pick it up again.

After dinner, I took a car to his apartment. Not to talk. He wasn't home yet, and I didn't wait. I moved through those rooms the way you move through a place you are already leaving—deliberate, quiet, detached. My toothbrush from his bathroom. The sweater I'd left on his chair. The novel on his nightstand, a bookmark still tucked inside at page 214. I put it all in a bag without looking at it too hard.

I set my key on the kitchen counter. Not thrown, not slammed. Just placed.

The elevator arrived. The doors closed. I took out my phone.

Two words.

*We're done.*

He called at eleven-oh-three. Then eleven-eleven. Then eleven-twenty-two. By midnight he had called seventeen times. I watched the screen light up from across the room where I had set it, face-up, because I wasn't hiding from anything.

I just wasn't answering.

I opened my laptop instead and pulled up the document I'd started earlier—the one with every deliverable, every timestamp, every thread. I added to it carefully, methodically, without emotion.

Because tomorrow morning, I was going to need this to be airtight.
