My Guardian Locked Me in the Shed, But My Real Parents Are Billionaires Summary

He only called me his daughter when the diner needed free labor. When his real daughter framed me for theft, he locked me in the shed and left me in the cold until I confessed. Chapter 1 of My Guardian Locked Me in the Shed, But My Real Parents Are Billionaires

I pinned the paper snowflake to the front of my faded gray sweater and pressed it flat with both hands.

One corner was bent. I had colored the edges blue during free period because plain white looked too boring. The four points were supposed to be four people holding hands.

Grant. Tessa. Brooke. Me.

That morning, Grant had looked over the top of his coffee mug and said, “Don’t embarrass me today.”

I had nodded so fast my ponytail hit my cheek.

I thought that meant I had a chance.

If I stayed quiet, smiled when people looked at me, and didn’t spill anything or ask for anything, maybe I could stand in the family picture this time.

The school gym was full of fake snow, paper stars, and parents in nice coats. A photographer had set up a winter backdrop with a wooden bench and two little pine trees covered in silver glitter.

“Cole family?” he called.

My stomach jumped.

I hurried after Grant, Tessa, and Brooke.

Brooke wore a dark green velvet dress. Tessa bent down to fix the big bow in her blond curls. Then Tessa straightened and put one hand on my shoulder.

For one happy second, I thought she was pulling me closer.

Instead, she moved me aside.

“Just the three of us,” she told the photographer.

I stared at her.

Maybe the bench was too small.

Maybe they were taking one picture first and another one after.

I backed up until my shoes touched the edge of the white cloth spread across the gym floor.

The photographer lowered his camera. “Does she belong in this one?”

Some parents from my class were only a few feet away. I could feel them looking at me.

Tessa smiled without looking at me. “She doesn’t need to be in it.”

Brooke hooked both arms around Grant’s arm and beamed at the camera. Grant put one arm around her and the other around Tessa.

He never turned his head.

I stepped out of the fake snow.

That was when I saw the trash can.

A folded piece of white paper sat on top of a paper coffee cup. I knew the blue crayon on the edge before I even picked it up.

My other snowflake.

I had made that one for Tessa and left it on the kitchen counter before school.

Four little people. Four points. All of us together.

Now it had coffee on one side.

I didn’t cry. Crying made Grant angry because he said tears were a trick children used when they wanted attention.

I pulled the snowflake out of the trash, smoothed it on my knee, and folded it small. Then I tucked it into the little pocket sewn into Button’s overalls.

Button was my old stuffed bear. His fur had once been red, but most of it had faded to a dusty pink. One ear leaned sideways because the stuffing had gone flat.

The camera flashed behind me.

The family picture was finished.

“My bracelet!” Brooke suddenly screamed.

Everyone nearby turned.

“My silver bracelet is gone!”

Mrs. Keller, our homeroom teacher, came over quickly. “Nobody panic. We’ll check the area first.”

They looked under the bench and behind the fake trees. Then Mrs. Keller asked the kids closest to the backdrop to empty their pockets.

When she got to me, my hands started shaking.

I didn’t know why. I hadn’t taken anything.

But a month earlier, Mrs. Keller had seen dark bruises on my arm and called Grant. He had been very quiet on the drive home. Quiet was worse than yelling.

That night, he had told me that if I made school people think strange things about our family again, he would call social services and have me sent somewhere else.

I reached into my sweater pocket.

Two candy wrappers came out.

Then something heavy hit the gym floor.

Clink.

Brooke’s silver bracelet lay beside my shoe.

The children around me moved back.

Brooke covered her mouth. Then her face crumpled.

“She always takes my things!” she cried. “Because nobody buys her nice stuff!”

My ears rang.

“I didn’t,” I whispered.

Mrs. Keller looked worried now. “Maisie, we need to call your guardian.”

“No.” The word came out too fast. I grabbed the edge of her sleeve and let go at once. “Please. Can I just go home? I can explain at home.”

But the call had already been made.

Grant arrived twenty minutes later.

He did not ask what happened.

He did not look at the bracelet.

He walked straight toward me in the hallway, caught my chin between his fingers, and tipped my face up.

“Apologize to your sister.”

“I didn’t take it.”

His fingers pressed harder.

“Now.”

My jaw hurt. “I didn’t, Grant.”

His eyes went flat.

He let go and turned to Mrs. Keller. “She’s my responsibility. I’ll deal with her.”

Before the teacher could answer, he unzipped my winter coat and pulled it off me.

The gym was warm, but I hugged my arms around myself anyway.

Grant handed my coat to Brooke.

“Thieves don’t get presents.”

Brooke stopped crying.

On the ride back to the Cole Family Diner, nobody spoke.

The lunch crowd was gone by the time we arrived. Grant pointed at the corner booth.

“No dinner. Fold the napkins.”

I sat down and made little triangles from thick paper squares while the diner filled with the smell of onions, fries, and hot soup.

My stomach made a loud noise.

I pressed my elbow against it so nobody would hear.

Brooke’s bracelet sat on the counter near the register.

When I carried over another stack of napkins, I saw something stuck in the clasp.

A tiny piece of red yarn.

I looked at Brooke.

She stood near the space heater in her red knit sweater. One cuff had a loose thread hanging from it.

My heart beat faster.

Proof.

“Grant.” I pointed. “Look. There’s red yarn in the clasp. It’s from Brooke’s sweater. She put it in my pocket.”

Tessa reached the bracelet first.

She snatched it up and dropped it into her purse.

“Nice try,” she said.

“But you didn’t look.”

“I don’t need to.”

Brooke smiled at me from beside the heater. “Are you going to play victim again?”

Grant came around the counter.

“Say, ‘I stole the bracelet,’ and you can eat.”

I stared at him.

A pot of chicken soup simmered behind him. I could see little pieces of carrot floating on top.

All I had to do was say five words.

I swallowed.

“I didn’t steal it.”

Grant grabbed my arm.

He pulled me through the back hallway and opened the metal door to the storage shed.

Cold air slapped my face.

The shed had corrugated metal walls and a concrete floor. Wind slipped through the seams. There was no heater.

A thin fleece blanket lay on a stack of flour sacks.

Grant picked it up and tossed it into the hallway.

“You can keep the bear,” he said.

Tessa stood behind him with her arms folded.

“Let her get cold,” she said. “Maybe she’ll remember who gives her a roof.”

The door slammed.

The lock clicked.

I sat on the concrete and pulled my knees against my chest. I wrapped the bottom of my diner apron around my feet and held Button under my chin.

At first, I counted to one hundred.

Then I did it again.

Then I stopped because my teeth were knocking together too hard.

Grant always said my real mother had not wanted me. He said I should be grateful the Coles had taken me in.

I had believed him.

I thought if I worked harder, talked less, and never caused trouble, one day I would stop feeling like a guest who might be thrown away.

Hours later, footsteps came to the door.

“Thought about it?” Grant asked through the metal.

I could barely feel my toes.

My stomach hurt.

I opened my mouth.

I almost said the words he wanted.

Then my fingers touched the little lump inside Button’s pocket.

The folded snowflake.

Four people holding hands.

Thrown in the trash before the picture was even taken.

Something inside me went very still.

It did not matter how good I was.

There had never been a place saved for me.

I leaned my cheek against the cold door.

“No,” I said.

My voice was tiny, but it did not shake.

“I didn’t steal it.”

For two seconds, there was nothing on the other side.

Then the strip of yellow light under the door disappeared.

Grant had turned off the hallway light.

The metal latch slid firmly back into place.
