Chapter 1 of My Son Put Her in the Mother Box—Then Threatened to Stop Calling Me Mom

When I became Rowan's mother at nineteen, half the pack said I was too young to raise an Alpha heir.

Kael stood beside me and told everyone I was his Luna, his mate, and Rowan's mother.

For five years, I believed him.

I packed school lunches, tracked fevers, learned every nightmare, and built my entire life around the two people I called home.

Then Kael's widowed childhood friend, Lydia, came back.

At first, I made room for her because grief was supposed to be temporary.

Rowan gave her my breakfast chair.

Then he put her photograph in the “Mother” box on his school family tree.

Kael called it harmless.

On my birthday, they forgot me completely and prepared a memorial dinner for Lydia's late mate instead.

I sat alone beside an untouched cake until midnight.

“Should we call Selena?” Lydia asked.

“She'll understand,” Kael said.

“Can Aunt Lydia sit in Mom's place again?” Rowan whispered.

“For tonight,” Kael answered. “Your mother will still be here tomorrow.”

"Are you here covering for someone, Luna Selena?" Mrs. Gable asked, tapping her plastic pen against her clipboard. "The Mother's Breakfast seating was already registered to Lydia under Rowan's new family form."

I stopped in the middle of the school hallway, the paper cup of coffee burning my palm.

"New family form?" I asked, my voice flat.

The teacher gestured to the sprawling corkboard covering the entire back wall. Rowan's family tree hung at eye level, colored in bright, waxy crayons. Kael's photo sat squarely in the box labeled Father. Right next to him, neatly glued into the Mother slot, was a picture of Lydia.

My own photo had been shoved to the bottom corner of the poster board. Someone had hastily penciled Luna Selena underneath it, the letters crooked and small.

Five years ago, I was nineteen and stepping into the Alpha estate for the first time. The pack whispered I was too young, too inexperienced to raise a child that wasn't mine. Kael had silenced them all by pinning the silver crest to my gown in front of the entire assembly. She is my Luna, and she is Rowan's mother.

I remembered that promise. It kept my hands from shaking now.

"Who confirmed this updated roster, Mrs. Gable?"

She pulled a printed log from her blue folder and handed it over. Kael's bold signature slashed across the bottom line. He had personally approved adding Lydia as a backup pickup and an emergency contact. The date was marked two days ago.

I handed the paper back without a word and walked into the classroom.

Rowan stood near the play kitchen, holding a bright yellow breakfast ticket out to Lydia.

"You have to come," Rowan told her, bouncing on his heels. "Mom never lets me have extra syrup, but you said you'd make wolf-shaped pancakes."

Lydia smiled, taking the ticket and tucking it into her designer purse. "Of course, sweetie."

I didn't yell. I didn't make a scene in front of the other parents gathered by the cubbies. I simply walked over and tapped Rowan's shoulder.

"Ro, come here for a second."

He dragged his feet, following me to the corner by the bookshelves.

"Why is Lydia in the Mother box on your project?" I asked, keeping my tone light.

Rowan crossed his arms, defensive immediately. "It's just homework."

"It's a family tree. There are designated spots for a reason."

"She plays with me all the time," he argued, his chin jutting out. "Mr. Davis said to put the family who spends the most time with you. It doesn't make a difference."

"We've gone to the Mother's Breakfast together for four years," I reminded him, crouching down to meet his eyes. "You draw me a card every spring."

Rowan rolled his eyes, a gesture he had clearly picked up recently. "If you're really my mom, why are you scared of a picture?"

A dry, hollow laugh escaped my throat. The sound was so strange and sharp it made Rowan flinch. Lydia wasn't just offering him company. She was giving him a measuring stick, a way to grade and replace the woman who raised him.

Heavy footsteps sounded at the classroom door. Kael strode in, his Alpha presence instantly quieting the room. He spotted us and frowned, crossing the linoleum floor in quick strides.

"Why are you turning a child's homework into a pack dispute in public?" Kael demanded, stopping beside Rowan.

I stood up, reached into my bag, pulled out the copy of the emergency contact record I had just asked Mrs. Gable to print, and pressed it flat against his chest.

"Why did you grant her parental clearance without my consent?" I asked.

Kael grabbed the paper, crumpling the edge in his fist. "I signed it. Lydia has been helping pick him up when you're busy with pack duties. I was just making life easier."

"Change it back today," I told him, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "And he redoes the tree."

"No," Kael said flatly.

"No?"

"I'm not making a five-year-old redo an assignment because you feel insecure." Kael sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose like I was giving him a headache. "Selena, you're the Luna. Don't fight a widow over a piece of paper. She just lost her mate. It's good for Rowan to be near her."

He framed my boundary as jealousy.

Lydia stood a few steps away, entirely silent. As Kael finished speaking, she picked up Rowan's dropped jacket and draped it over the boy's shoulders. Her movements were seamless, practiced. She already knew no one was going to ask her to step back.

Two hours later, the house was suffocatingly quiet.

I walked into the kitchen and stared at the stainless steel refrigerator. The family calendar hung on the left door, held up by magnets. Kael had already taken a red marker to Friday's square, checking the box for the Mother's Breakfast.

In the participant line, he had written Lydia.

I grabbed a black pen from the counter, crossed out her name with one thick line, and wrote Selena.

"Don't put Rowan in the middle of this."

I turned. Kael leaned against the doorframe, his arms crossed over his chest. He watched me cap the pen, expecting me to back down. He was asking me to forfeit my own son.

"I'm not the one putting him in the middle," I said, tossing the pen onto the granite counter. "You are. You gave away my seat."

"It's a school breakfast, Selena. Not a pack trial."

"It's my son."

"He's my son too," Kael shot back. "And right now, he wants to spend time with someone who makes him happy."

Before I could answer, rapid footsteps pounded down the staircase. Rowan sprinted into the kitchen, entirely ignoring me. He ran straight to Lydia, who had just walked in behind Kael.

Rowan shoved a folded piece of construction paper into her hands.

The front of the card read For Mom in messy blue marker.

"Can Lydia go this time?" Rowan asked, looking up at me. "She never had a kid make this for her."

I didn't offer a compromise. I didn't smooth over the tension or pretend everything was fine.

I stared directly at Kael.

"If he says she needs my bedroom more next time, will you tell me not to make a fuss then too?"

Kael's jaw tightened. He offered no answer. The silence stretched, thick and suffocating, until Rowan tugged on Lydia's hand, pulling her toward the dining room. She followed him, her fingers wrapped tightly around the card with my title on it.

I watched them disappear around the corner.

Then I walked upstairs to Kael's study, bypassed the safe he thought only he knew the combination to, and pulled out the unsigned pack separation agreement I had drafted three months ago.
