Chapter 1 of Fired by My Billionaire Husband, I Returned as His Board Chairman

I spent three years playing the submissive secretary and secret wife, saving my husband’s company from bankruptcy. On our anniversary, instead of dinner, he handed me a cardboard box. He announced his high-society ex as the new Executive VP and ordered me to scrub down my own office for her. His mother threw a nondisclosure agreement in my face, calling me a parasite unworthy of the Vance name. Carter warned me that without him, I was nothing. I smiled, swallowed the tears, and signed the divorce papers right on his desk. He thought he was kicking a stray dog onto the street. He didn't know Aegis Capital—the fund holding 42% of his company—belongs entirely to me. Tomorrow is the emergency board meeting. And tomorrow, I’m firing him.

The final notice from the Securities and Exchange Commission declaring our registration statement effective lay on the center of the desk, the printed confirmation still warm from the office printer.

It had taken me six months of eighty-hour workweeks, endless conference calls with federal regulators, and three sleepless nights in a row to clear the Vance Group’s path to a public listing. Next to the thick stack of legal filings sat a small velvet box. Inside was a platinum tie clip, engraved on the inner curve with today’s date: our third wedding anniversary.

For three years, I had lived two lives under the same roof. From eight in the morning until seven in the evening, I was Vivian, the chief executive secretary who kept Carter’s empire running without a single misstep. After midnight, behind the drawn blinds of our penthouse, I was the quiet wife who heated his milk, rubbed the tension from his temples, and waited up until his car pulled into the underground garage.

"Once the IPO passes compliance, we won't need to hide anymore," Carter had whispered into my hair two weeks ago, his fingers tracing the faint indentation on my left ring finger where my wedding band belonged. "I’ll announce our marriage to the board myself. You won't have to stay in the shadows, Vivian."

I had believed him.

I smoothed the lapel of my tailored grey blazer, picked up the velvet box, and set it directly beside the approved prospectus. Everything was ready. The board meeting was scheduled for ten, and Carter was due any second.

The double mahogany doors swung open with a heavy thud.

Carter stepped into the executive suite. He looked immaculate in his charcoal three-piece suit, his jaw sharp and commanding as always. But he wasn't alone. Walking beside him, her arm looped effortlessly through his, was a woman in a tailored ivory dress and red-soled heels.

Chloe Montgomery.

His first love, the woman who had left for Paris four years ago, shattering his pride and sending him straight into the quiet convenience of our secret arrangement.

Behind them filed the senior directors and department heads, murmuring among themselves.

"Carter," I began, stepping forward with the compliance folder in hand. "The SEC declared the registration statement effective. The Nasdaq listing date is officially locked for next week."

Carter didn't take the folder. He didn't even glance at the velvet box sitting on the desk blotter. His eyes swept past me as if I were a piece of office furniture that had been shifted slightly out of place.

"Good," he said, his tone flat and businesslike. He turned toward the assembled executives, raising a hand to command the room. "Before we review the paperwork, I have a major personnel announcement to make."

The room fell completely silent. My pulse quickened against my ribs. A foolish, desperate part of me wondered if this was the moment he had promised—if he was about to tell the board that the woman who had built their operational backbone was his wife.

"As of this morning," Carter announced, his deep voice carrying effortless authority, "Chloe Montgomery is returning to the company as Executive Vice President. She will oversee all strategic operations leading up to the IPO."

A ripple of quiet shock moved through the executives. The position had been promised to me since the restructuring began last winter. Every director in the room knew I had run operations for three years without the title.

Before anyone could speak, Carter turned his gaze back to me. His eyes were cold, distant, and completely unreadable.

"Vivian," he said, without a trace of hesitation. "You'll need to pack up your things immediately. Chloe will be taking this corner office as her private executive lounge."

The words hit like a physical slap.

"My office?" I asked, my voice steady despite the sudden tightness in my throat. "Carter, this suite connects directly to the core server archives. All the confidential IPO audit drafts are filed here. My workspace has been here for three years."

"And now Chloe needs it," Carter said, cutting me off smoothly. "Her comfort is paramount during this transition. You can move your laptop to the administrative bullpen on the forty-second floor."

The open bullpen, where junior clerks and temporary interns answered phones. He was stripping three years of authority in front of the entire leadership team in less than thirty seconds.

Chloe stepped forward, her red lips curving into a soft, sympathetic smile that didn't reach her eyes. She reached out and took my hand, squeezing my fingers with exaggerated warmth.

"Oh, Carter, don't be so harsh on her," Chloe said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Vivian has worked so hard for you. I know how much effort she puts into managing your schedule."

She turned her gaze to me, leaning in just enough so only I could hear the sharp edge under her breath. "It must be hard, giving up what was never really yours to begin with."

In her left hand, Chloe held a tall paper cup filled with an iced hazelnut latte. As she pulled back from the handshake, her elbow jerked outward with sudden, sharp clumsiness.

The heavy cup tipped over.

A wave of sticky, iced brown liquid surged across the glass desk, washing straight over the six-month IPO working drafts, soaking into my annotated review copies, and pooling around the velvet box.

"Oh, no!" Chloe gasped, pressing both hands to her cheeks in mock horror. "Look what I did! My hands are so clumsy today. Vivian, I am so, so sorry."

She didn't look sorry. A triumphant gleam flashed in her eyes as the liquid ruined hundreds of hours of my painstaking work.

She turned to the side credenza, grabbed a grey dusting cloth used by the cleaning staff, and shoved it directly against my chest.

"Carter always told me you have the quickest hands in the building," Chloe said, her chin lifting as she looked down at me. "Be a dear and wipe this up before it stains the wood. And while you're at it, my driver just parked downstairs with ten suitcases from my flight. Go down and bring them up here, would you?"

I stood entirely still. The damp rag rested against my palm.

I didn't look at Chloe. I turned my head and looked directly at Carter.

He had seen every second of it. He knew what those documents represented. He knew the hours I had spent bleeding for his company, and he knew who I was to him behind closed doors.

"Carter?" I said quietly.

Carter adjusted his cuffs, his face an impenetrable wall of indifference.

"You heard her, Vivian," he said, his voice entirely dismissive. "Wipe down the desk and follow Chloe's instructions. Don't make a scene in front of the board."

*Don't make a scene.*

The executives watched in silence, some averting their eyes, others looking on with veiled amusement. None of them spoke up.

I looked down at my left hand. Beneath the fluorescent lights, the faint, pale ring mark pressed into my skin seemed to burn. Three years of silence. Three years of warming his bed, managing his life, and carrying his company on my shoulders, only to be handed a dirty rag and ordered to carry his mistress's luggage.

The final trace of warmth in my chest went completely cold. The woman who loved Carter Vance died right there on that sodden carpet.

I did not scream. I did not throw the rag in his face.

Instead, I dropped the cloth onto the drenched papers, letting it soak up the coffee. I stepped back, cleanly avoiding the puddle dripping over the mahogany edge onto the rug.

Without a word, I reached into my blazer pocket and pulled out my personal phone.

Under the table, away from their sight, my thumb tapped open a secure, black-screen application—an encrypted terminal tied to a private Swiss ledger and the anonymous offshore fund that had quietly supplied sixty percent of Vance Group's seed capital three years ago.

Carter thought he was the master of this empire. He had forgotten who actually held the purse strings.

My fingers moved over the screen, typing out a single command sequence recognized only by Aegis Capital's private investment control desk in Manhattan:

*Initiate Protocol: Net Closing.*

I locked the screen, slid the phone back into my pocket, looked Carter straight in the eye, and smiled.
