Fake Divorce, Real Retribution

The American Express alert chimed on my phone at exactly 2:47 PM, interrupting my review of quarterly investment reports. I glanced at the notification with the casual indifference of someone accustomed to substantial charges—until I saw the amount. Six thousand dollars. Hermès Beverly Hills. I set down my Mont Blanc pen, the burgundy leather of my home office chair creaking as I leaned back. Six thousand dollars wasn't unusual for our household expenses, but something about this particular charge felt off. Tanner typically consulted me about major purchases, a courtesy born from years of managing our combined finances with military precision. I opened the detailed statement on my laptop, my manicured fingers clicking across the keyboard with practiced efficiency. The transaction details populated: one limited-edition children's backpack, custom monogrammed, purchased for immediate delivery to the Shaw residence on Maple Drive. Atlas and Eliana's address.

Chapter 1 of Fake Divorce, Real Retribution

My throat tightened. A six-thousand-dollar backpack for Violet? She was only six years old. What six-year-old needed a Hermès backpack that cost more than most people's monthly salary?

I pulled up Tanner's location on our shared family app—still at his downtown office, deep in client meetings according to his calendar. The rational part of my mind supplied reasonable explanations: perhaps it was Violet's birthday, or maybe Tanner was feeling generous after his recent promotion. But the tightness in my chest suggested something else entirely.

The grandfather clock in the hallway chimed three times, its resonant notes echoing through our Bel Air mansion. I found myself staring at the framed photo on my desk—Tanner, Rhett, and me at last year's charity gala, all smiles and perfectly coordinated formal wear. Tanner's arm around my waist, his expression warm and attentive.

When had he last looked at me that way?

Two weeks later, the second charge arrived like a slap across the face.

$130,000.

I was reviewing invoices in the conservatory when my phone buzzed with another American Express alert. This time, I didn't wait to check my laptop. My hands trembled slightly as I opened the banking app, the afternoon sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows suddenly feeling too bright, too harsh.

European Heritage Craftsmen, Ltd. Custom dollhouse commission. Delivery address: the Shaw residence.

One hundred and thirty thousand dollars. For a dollhouse.

I set the phone down with deliberate care, my breathing shallow. The conservatory's abundant plants—carefully maintained by our gardening staff—seemed to close in around me. The sweet scent of jasmine that usually calmed my nerves now felt cloying, overwhelming.

This wasn't generosity. This was something else entirely.

That evening, I waited for Tanner in our bedroom, perched on the edge of our king-sized bed with its Egyptian cotton sheets and hand-carved Italian headboard. He entered at eight-thirty, loosening his Hermès tie—the irony wasn't lost on me—and offering me the same distracted smile he'd perfected over the years.

"Long day," he murmured, moving toward the walk-in closet without making eye contact.

"Tanner." My voice carried the crisp authority I'd inherited from my father's boardroom presence. "We need to discuss your recent purchases."

His shoulders tensed, but he continued hanging up his suit jacket with methodical precision. "Which purchases would those be?"

"The backpack. The dollhouse. Both for Violet."

When he turned to face me, his expression was carefully neutral—the same mask he wore during difficult client negotiations. "Violet's a sweet kid. I wanted to spoil her a little."

"To the tune of one hundred and thirty-six thousand dollars?"

"It's our money, Adaline. I didn't realize I needed permission to buy gifts for family."

Our money. The phrase hit me like ice water. Technically, it was my money—inherited wealth from the Kennedy family trust, carefully managed and multiplied through decades of shrewd investments. Tanner's architect salary, while substantial, was a fraction of what funded our lifestyle.

"That's not the point," I said, rising from the bed. "It's the amount, Tanner. A hundred and thirty thousand dollars for a child's toy?"

He shrugged, the gesture casual and dismissive. "Atlas has been struggling financially. I thought Violet deserved something special."

The lie slipped from his lips with practiced ease, but I caught the slight flutter of his left eyelid—a tell I'd noticed during our early dating years when he'd downplay his poker losses.

"And what about Rhett?" The question escaped before I could stop it. "When was the last time you spent even a fraction of that amount on our son?"

Tanner's jaw tightened. "Rhett doesn't need to be spoiled. He needs to learn the value of hard work and responsibility."

I stared at my husband—this man I'd shared a bed with for eight years, who'd held my hand during Rhett's birth, who'd once promised to love and honor me—and felt something fundamental shift between us. The foundation of our marriage, built on what I'd believed was mutual respect and partnership, suddenly felt as fragile as tissue paper.

"I see," I said quietly. "Well, I suppose that explains everything."

But as I watched him disappear into the bathroom, I realized it explained nothing at all. It only raised questions I wasn't sure I was ready to answer.

Questions that would change everything.

Alpha Rejected True Mate
Alpha Rejected True Mate
The greenhouse was my sanctuary in a pack house that had never felt like home. Dawn hadn't yet broken when I slipped inside, the familiar scent of damp soil and blooming flowers wrapping around me like an embrace I'd long been denied elsewhere. My fingers trembled slightly as I reached for the watering can—a weakness I couldn't afford to show outside these glass walls. I focused on the white lilies, my favorites. Their pure petals reminded me of what I once was—hopeful, untainted. Before the mate bond that became my prison. "You're wilting too, aren't you?" I whispered to a drooping bloom, gently supporting its stem. My wolf, Luna, whimpered softly in the back of my mind. Once silver and strong, she now barely stirred, weakened by the sickness that had been consuming us both since I gave too much blood to save William three years ago. A sudden tremor ran through my bones, stronger than the usual morning weakness.
