Chapter 1 of When My Ex-Husband Humiliated Me at the Hotel, the Billionaire Chose Me

The lobby of The Greenwich Hotel smells like money. Old money — cedar and white flowers and something cold underneath, like marble that never fully warms. I've mopped this floor sixty-three times. I know every vein in every tile.

I'm on my knees at the far end of the lobby, working the mop in slow arcs, when the revolving door breathes open and the afternoon light cuts in.

I hear her laugh first.

It's a particular sound — bright and slightly too deliberate, the laugh of someone who knows they're being watched. I don't look up right away. I've trained myself not to. But my hands slow on the mop handle, and the cold that lives in the marble seems to rise up through my knees.

Then I hear his footsteps.

I know that walk. I spent four years learning it — the particular rhythm of Dean Murray moving through a room like he owns it. He didn't own anything when I found him. He was outside a Brooklyn shelter in February, half-frozen, wearing a jacket with a broken zipper. I paid his ER bill with my credit card. I told him it would be okay.

I look up.

He's wearing a charcoal coat I don't recognize. Khloe is on his arm in cream Valentino, her dark hair pinned back, her smile already arranged. She's been practicing that smile since we were teenagers — the one that says she's not trying.

Dean sees me the moment I see him.

He doesn't stop walking. He adjusts his direction.

I get to my feet. It's instinct — some old reflex that says don't be on your knees when he gets here. I'm still holding the mop when he stops three feet away, reaches into his coat pocket, and pulls out a folded stack of hundreds.

He scatters them across the wet floor. One by one. Unhurried.

"You missed a spot," he says. Loud enough. Loud enough for the concierge desk, for the bellman, for the couple waiting by the elevator.

Khloe's smile doesn't change. It's the smile she had when she watched me open my hospital room door to a process server. The same smile. I've never forgotten it.

I don't say anything. I look at the money on the wet marble. Then I look at him.

His jaw is set the way it gets when he's waiting for a reaction. He always needed the reaction. That was the thing I took too long to understand.

I don't give him one.

Behind me, my supervisor's voice comes low and tight: "Campbell. Clean it up. Now."

I bend down. I pick up every bill. I cannot afford to lose this job.

---

Priya finds me in the supply closet twenty minutes later. She's a small woman, Priya Nair, with a sharp face and the kind of loyalty that arrives without announcement. She closes the door behind her.

"Tell me his room number," she says. "I have bleach."

Something in my chest shifts — not quite a smile, but close. "No."

"Diana."

"No, Priya."

She looks at me for a long moment. Then she says, quietly: "You're the most dignified person I've ever watched get humiliated. I mean that."

I fold that sentence up carefully and put it somewhere safe. The same place I keep my mother's photograph. Small things. Carried. Never displayed.

---

He comes back three more times that week. Always with Khloe. Always requesting me by name for room service — a formality routed through the concierge so there's a paper trail, so it looks like a preference rather than what it is.

On Thursday, a formal request arrives at the housekeeping desk: press one evening gown for the guest in the penthouse suite. A Valentino. The same designer whose pieces I used to wear for my father's charity galas, back when photographers knew my name.

I press the gown. I do not leave a wrinkle.

My supervisor pulls me aside afterward. "Your personal drama," she says, "is creating a difficult atmosphere."

I nod. I go back to work.

---

That night I take the crosstown bus home to Washington Heights. Lulu is at the window when I come up the street — I can see her small silhouette from half a block away, her forehead against the glass.

I make dinner with both hands. The scarred one and the whole one. I've never let the right hand become an excuse, even when it aches in cold weather, even when I catch someone's eyes drop to it on the subway. The bones were crushed beyond repair. That's what the surgeon said. I remember the ceiling tiles of that hospital room more clearly than I remember the pain.

I bathe Lulu. I sit on the edge of her bed until her breathing goes slow and even, her fingers curled loosely around my damaged hand like it's the most natural thing in the world.

I allow myself three minutes in the hallway. Then I go to the kitchen.

I don't cry.

---

It's after midnight when I notice the car.

A black SUV, parked across from the building. Engine off. Windows dark. It's been there three nights running — I've started clocking it the way you clock something that doesn't have a reason to be there.

I stand on the sidewalk in my coat and look at it for a moment. The tinted glass gives nothing back.

Then I go inside.

I don't know yet who's watching. I just know that someone is.
