Chapter 1 of Drew a Husband, Ditched the Scum, Seduced the Uncle

The deafening, relentless roar of rushing water filled her ears, a terrifying symphony of destruction. The icy, unforgiving currents of the river had invaded her lungs, bringing a brutal, searing cold that mercilessly stole her breath and her life. Aurore Henson's consciousness fractured in the absolute agony of drowning. She choked, a violent, tearing cough racking her broken body as the darkness threatened to swallow her whole.

But then, the crushing pressure of the water vanished.

She wasn't sinking into the murky, freezing abyss. The blurry, chaotic darkness in her vision slowly began to clear, replaced by a blinding, harsh light. She was sitting at a grand, expansive dining table. The brilliant glare from the massive crystal chandelier hanging above forced Aurore to instinctively raise a trembling hand to shield her eyes, her eyelids fluttering as she tried to adjust to the sudden brightness.

"Sis, what's wrong with you?" a youthful, slightly rebellious voice rang out close to her ear.

Aurore turned her head slowly, her neck feeling stiff. Sitting next to her was her seventeen-year-old brother, Dylan. He was dressed in a sharp suit that he clearly found uncomfortable, his brow furrowed in typical teenage impatience as he looked at her.

"Sister, it's time to draw lots," a timid, sweet, milky little voice chimed in from her other side.

Aurore looked down. Her five-year-old sister, Anna, was looking up at her with wide, innocent, dark eyes, her chubby little hands resting on the edge of the table. Aurore reached out on pure instinct and gently squeezed Anna's little hand. It was warm. It was incredibly soft and full of life.

Her own body was warm, too. There was no bone-chilling, icy river water soaking through her clothes. There was no torrential rain pouring down outside, turning the world into a gray nightmare.

She was back.

At the same time, the elders of the Henson and Davenport families, who had been following her previously dazed and vacant gaze toward the large dining room windows, all turned their attention back to her in unison. The collective, burning weight of their stares pulled Aurore's mind completely back to reality.

She swept her gaze across the luxurious private dining room, taking in the familiar faces, the opulent decor, the scent of expensive cuisine.

It was real. She had truly returned.

She had returned to the exact day of the marriage contract lot-drawing ceremony!

A violent tremor ran through her core, a chaotic mixture of profound shock, lingering terror, and the wild, untamed joy of survival. In her past life, her family's company had run into severe, catastrophic financial trouble. Desperate, she had gone to find her husband, J. C. Davenport, to beg him to inject capital into the Henson Group. She had planned to wait outside his private dining room at a high-end restaurant until his business dinner was over. But as she approached, through the narrow crack of the slightly ajar door, she saw a scene that shattered her universe.

She saw her parents-in-law and her own son celebrating another woman's birthday.

Through that sliver of space, she had watched her husband, the man she had loved for fifteen years, open a velvet jewelry box, revealing a green diamond necklace that blazed with blinding, expensive fire.

"Happy birthday, Summer," her mother-in-law, Susannah, had said, her voice dripping with an affection she had never shown Aurore.

"Happy birthday, Mom!" her thirteen-year-old son had cheered, hugging the woman tightly.

They were calling Summer Knapp-the illegitimate daughter the Knapp family had only officially recognized eight years ago-'Mom'.

"Summer, dear, you've suffered so much these past years," Susannah's voice had echoed in the hallway, slicing through Aurore's heart. "Not being able to be with J. C. openly, having to let your precious child be raised under Aurore's name... J. C. has truly wronged you. If it weren't for the fact that keeping the boy under Aurore's name allowed us to secure the Henson fortune and properties, J. C. should have divorced her the moment she gave birth to that stillborn girl. A useless girl, at that."

Those words had hit Aurore harder than the torrential rain outside, smashing into her soul like a sledgehammer. Her daughter had died at birth. And the son she had lovingly, painstakingly raised for thirteen years was actually her husband's child with his mistress.

Aurore couldn't remember how she had stumbled out of that restaurant. All she remembered was the blinding headlights of an out-of-control truck, the deafening crash of metal on metal, and the icy river water rapidly filling her sinking car. She had thought that was the end. The most pathetic, tragic end to a life built entirely on malicious lies.

But fate had given her a second chance.

Aurore offered a genuine, chilling smile. She slowly lifted her gaze to look at J. C. Davenport sitting across the table. The warmth in her green eyes vanished, replaced by a cold, distilled hatred that could freeze blood.

J. C. paused, a flicker of confusion crossing his handsome face. For a second, Aurore's expression seemed terrifyingly strange, almost predatory, but then she smiled at him. He brushed it off as his imagination. Right now, he just needed her to follow their plan.

"Miss Henson, it's time to draw," J. C. said, keeping his voice politely distant to hide the fact that they had secretly promised themselves to each other half a month ago.

Sitting opposite Aurore were the three eligible Davenport nephews. Compared to the other two, J. C. exuded a confident, relaxed aura. Because half a month ago, Aurore had promised to choose him. And the silver ball he needed her to draw had been tampered with. This was his only chance to win against his cousins. His father was a live-in husband who had married into the Davenport family. Though J. C. lived in the Davenport estate, he was always treated like an outsider. To avoid being crushed by them, J. C. had to succeed in business. And Aurore Henson was his ultimate stepping stone.

Aurore smiled sweetly. "Where is the box?"
