Chapter 1 of Divorced! Mr. CEO Kneels for Forgiveness

I loved Ryan with all my heart, but on the day our divorce was finalized, he announced his engagement to my best friend, Chloe.

I never got the chance to tell him I was pregnant.

For six years, my childhood friend Daniel stepped in, holding my hand in the delivery room and raising my son, Theo, as his own.

Daniel was the perfect father, spoiling us and silencing anyone who dared to judge my past.

I thought I had finally found my safe haven.

Until Theo had a severe allergic reaction at school, and the hospital demanded his biological father's medical history.

I had no choice but to call Ryan.

He rushed into the emergency room, only to freeze when Theo threw his arms around Daniel and cried, "Daddy, I'm scared!"

Ryan's eyes locked onto Theo's face—a carbon copy of his own.

"I intercepted her ultrasound letter six years ago," Ryan's mother confessed coldly in the hallway.

"I know," Daniel whispered, pulling me tight against his chest.

"And I burned it."

The red light above the trauma bay glared against the white wall. I squeezed Theo's worn teddy bear until the seam of one velvet ear dug into my palm.

A nurse pushed through the swinging doors with a clipboard pressed to her chest. Her mask hung beneath her chin, and a strand of hair had escaped her cap.

"Ms. Hayes, the swelling in his throat isn't responding the way we expected." Her words were brisk, but fear sharpened the edges. "Does his biological father have a history of severe allergies, unexplained swelling, or reactions to anesthesia?"

"I don't know." Shame burned behind my ribs. A mother should know the answer to every question that could save her child. "His father has never been involved."

"Find out now. It may determine which medication the attending adds before we have to secure his airway."

She disappeared through the doors. Beyond them, an alarm rose and then cut off.

My hands shook as I pulled out my phone. Ryan's number had lived on my blocked list for six years, though I had never managed to delete it. We had not exchanged a word since the afternoon we signed our divorce papers. The same afternoon I learned he had already put a two-carat diamond on the finger of Chloe Davis, my childhood best friend.

I unblocked him and called.

He answered on the second ring. "Who is this?"

"It's Emma." My voice cracked, and I forced air into my lungs. "I need your medical history. Allergies, reactions to medication, anything that runs in the Carter family."

Silence, followed by a disbelieving laugh. "After six years, that's your opening line?"

"Ryan, please. This is a medical emergency."

"I'm at St. Matthew's now. East wing, third floor. If this is important, come explain it in person." His voice hardened. "I don't have time for another one of your games."

The line went dead.

I left Theo's bear on a plastic chair and sprinted toward the east wing. My shoes slapped the polished floor. Twice, staff members had to flatten themselves against the wall to let me pass.

Ryan rounded the corner before I reached the elevators. He wore a charcoal suit and the expression that had once silenced entire boardrooms. He stopped directly in my path.

"What exactly is your angle?" he demanded. "Six years of silence, and you appear at the hospital on the morning my company is negotiating a new research contract?"

"Your family medical history. That's all I want."

I tried to move around him. His hand closed around my wrist.

"Who is sick?" he asked. "A boyfriend? A relative? Or did you hear Chloe and I finally chose a wedding venue?"

I twisted free. "A six-year-old boy is struggling to breathe, and you are making this about a wedding."

His eyes narrowed. "Why would the doctors need my history for some random child?"

The accusation in his voice stripped away the last of my restraint. I pulled a creased photocopy from my coat pocket and pushed it against his chest. It fluttered to the floor between us.

"That is the five-thousand-dollar cashier's check your mother sent when she ordered me out of your life," I said. "I never cashed it. I kept a copy in case one of you ever accused me of coming back for money."

Ryan glanced down but did not pick it up.

"I don't want your fortune," I continued. "I need ten honest minutes with a doctor and, if they ask for it, a blood or saliva sample. Refuse afterward if you still think this is a scam."

For the first time, uncertainty cracked his composure. "Where is the child?"

The doors at the far end of the corridor opened, and the nurse who had spoken to me waved urgently. "Ms. Hayes, we need the father to sign the testing consent."

Ryan looked from her to me. The color drained from his face.

"Father?" he repeated.

"Sign first," I said. "Ask questions when my son can breathe."

He followed without another argument.

Inside the treatment area, a lab technician met us with a consent form and two labeled tubes. Ryan signed with a hand that remained steady even as his eyes searched every curtained bay.

"Any known reactions to antibiotics, anesthesia, insect stings, or food?" the technician asked.

"Penicillin," Ryan said. "My father nearly died after taking it. My grandmother had episodes of facial swelling that doctors never explained."

The technician marked the form, drew two vials of blood, and hurried away. An attending physician called the family history toward the respiratory team. Orders changed. A cart rolled past us, wheels rattling over the tile.

I stood at the trauma bay doors, unable to cross the red line on the floor. Ryan remained behind me.

"Emma," he said quietly. "How old is your son?"

Before I could answer, the alarms stopped.

The sudden silence was worse.

Then the red light above the bay switched off, and a nurse opened the doors. "His airway is stable. The medication is working."

My knees almost gave way.

Theo lay beneath a thin hospital blanket, an oxygen mask covering half his face. His cheeks were flushed, and an IV disappeared beneath tape on his bruised hand, but his chest rose in a steady rhythm.

I took one step toward him.

The opposite door burst open, and Daniel Lowe rushed in wearing blue scrubs beneath an unbuttoned white coat. His stethoscope swung against his chest as he crossed the room.

He dropped beside the bed and wrapped one arm carefully around Theo. "I'm here, buddy. I've got you."

Theo's eyelids fluttered. His fingers found Daniel's sleeve and held tight.

"Daddy," he whispered through the mask.

Relief broke through me in a sob. Daniel looked over Theo's head and found my eyes. The terror in his face matched my own.

Behind me, someone drew a sharp breath.

Ryan stood in the doorway with one hand locked around the metal handle. His gaze passed over Daniel and fixed on the child in the bed.

Theo turned toward the sound. The mask shifted just enough to reveal his straight nose, stubborn chin, and gray eyes.

Ryan stared at the unmistakable echo of his own face.

Then he looked at me.

"Six," he said, his voice barely audible. "He's six."
