Chapter 1 of My Husband Gave Our Dead Son's Nursery to His Pregnant Mistress

Emma's POV

The repair shop had fixed Noah's bear.

I squeezed its paw at a red light just to hear it again. "Mama." Noah's voice, recorded eighteen months ago, small and sleepy and a little slurred. The technician had replaced the speaker for free after I explained who it was for.

I was smiling when I unlocked the front door.

Then the smell hit me. Fresh paint, thick and chemical, heavy enough to coat my tongue.

I took the stairs two at a time, the bear crushed against my chest. Noah's door stood wide open. Plastic sheeting covered the floor, and two painters in white coveralls were rolling peach-pink over the wall I'd spent a whole weekend stenciling with blue stars.

Half the stars were already gone.

The other half peeked through the wet pink like they were drowning.

Three months ago, after the funeral, I had shaken so hard I couldn't hold a cup of coffee. Ryan had wrapped his arms around me on the edge of our bed and said, "That room is his. Forever. Nobody touches it."

Now my husband stood beside a paint can, steadying the ladder with one hand.

He saw me and didn't even let go of it.

"Emma, you're home early. We were hoping to finish this before you got back."

"We," I repeated.

"Don't make this a thing."

"You're painting over his stars, Ryan."

Neither painter looked at me. One of them kept rolling.

Then I heard a hanger scrape against the closet rod.

I stepped inside. A woman stood in front of Noah's closet with her back half-turned, sorting his tiny clothes into two piles. She wore one of Ryan's old flannel shirts, sleeves shoved to her elbows, and it stretched tight over the round, unmistakable curve of her stomach.

Allison. His assistant. The woman who'd sent a fruit basket to the hospital.

She held up a pair of white baby shoes. Noah's first shoes, the soft leather ones he'd worn when he took his three wobbly steps across our kitchen. She turned them over, studied the scuffed toes, and dropped them into a black contractor bag.

I crossed the room before I knew I'd moved.

"Don't you touch those."

I shoved my arm into the bag and dug past onesies and burp cloths until my fingers closed around the shoes. They were so small they fit in one palm.

Allison didn't step back. She tilted her head and smiled, like I was a waitress who'd brought the wrong order.

"I'm seven months pregnant, Emma. Ryan's baby needs somewhere to sleep."

The room went very quiet. Even the roller stopped.

Six months.

Pieces I had been too exhausted to look at slid together all at once. The late nights at the office that kept getting later. His phone always face-down on the counter. The work calendar he'd switched to private in the spring, telling me I didn't need to see every boring meeting.

I turned to him. "Is she lying?"

Ryan finally took his hand off the ladder. He looked at Allison, not at me.

"No," he said. "It's mine."

He said it the way he'd tell me the dishwasher was broken. A problem he'd already decided to solve.

I set the bear down on Noah's mattress very carefully, because my hands had started to shake and I didn't want to drop it.

"Stop," I told the painters. "Both of you. Get out of this room."

The older one glanced at Ryan.

"He doesn't get a vote," I said. "This is my son's room."

I went to the doorframe. In Sharpie were the lines we'd drawn every three months. *Noah, 9 mo. Noah, 1 yr. Noah, 18 mo. Noah, 6 yrs.* The last mark reached almost to my ribs. I pressed my back against it and spread my hand over the ink, like the pink might come for it next.

Ryan's fingers closed around my wrist.

"Okay. Hallway."

"Get off me."

He didn't. He pulled me out of the room, past the half-dismantled bed with its frame still standing, and his grip tightened when I twisted. The doorknob was smeared with pink, and it left a streak across my sleeve as he dragged me through.

In the hall, he finally let go. My wrist was already turning red.

"Are you out of your mind?" he hissed. "She's pregnant. You want to scream in front of a pregnant woman? You know what stress does at this stage?"

"You moved your girlfriend into our dead son's room."

"It's a nursery. It was always going to be a nursery."

"It was *his*."

Allison appeared in the doorway behind him, one hand on her belly, eyes wide and wet. Ryan reached back without looking and settled his hand on her shoulder. Easy. Familiar. Like he'd done it a thousand times.

I stared at that hand.

When Noah was in the ICU, I'd slept three nights in a plastic waiting-room chair because I was afraid to be more than fifty feet from him. On the third night, Ryan had knelt in front of me and held my face and said, "We're not giving up on him. I'm never giving up on us."

"Keeping that room the way it was isn't healthy," Ryan said now. "You go in there every night. You sit on the floor. Emma, it's been three months."

"Three months," I said. "That's your timeline for grief?"

"Noah is gone, Emma. This baby is alive. You need to start thinking about the living."

Something in my chest went perfectly still.

Behind him, the roller started again. Slow, wet strokes. Another star disappearing.

I walked past them both and down the stairs, holding the shoes.

---

I didn't come out of the guest room until after ten.

The house was dark except for the lamp by the fireplace. I came down with Noah's shoes in my hands, meaning to put them somewhere safe. Somewhere Allison wouldn't think to look.

I stopped on the bottom step.

The walls were wrong.

There had been seventeen photos of Noah in this house. I knew the number because I'd chosen every one. Newborn and furious in the hospital blanket. Covered in birthday cake. Asleep on Ryan's chest on the couch. They'd hung over the mantel, beside the dining table, up the turn of the staircase.

All seventeen were gone.

Faint pale rectangles marked where they'd been, the paint around them a shade darker from years of sunlight.

New frames had already gone up in their places. Black-and-white maternity shots. Allison in a white dress, hands cupped under her bump. Allison laughing in a field. And over the fireplace, the largest one: Ryan on his knees in front of her, eyes closed, lips pressed to her stomach.

I took it off the wall.

It was heavier than I expected. I flipped it over. The studio had printed a label on the backing board.

*Maternity Session — 28 Weeks — March 3.*

I counted backward. Twenty-eight weeks, minus the two counted before conception.

September.

In September, Noah had been in Room 412 with a tube in his arm, asking me why the nurses' gloves were purple. In September, Ryan had been telling me he had to stay late to keep his job, because we needed the insurance.

"You found it."

Ryan stood in the kitchen doorway holding a glass of water. He didn't sound guilty. He sounded relieved, like I'd saved him a conversation.

"September," I said. "While our son was dying."

He took a sip. Set the glass down on the counter.

"Yes, the baby's mine. And no, I'm not going to apologize for becoming a father again."

I waited for the tears. They'd come so easily for three months, at the grocery store, in the shower, in the car outside the pediatrician's office I'd forgotten to cancel.

Nothing came.

I set the frame face-down on the mantel. Then I slid Noah's shoes into the pocket of my coat, one and then the other, and buttoned the flap over them.

Ryan watched me do it. "Emma—"

I looked past him, at the wall, at the photograph of a child who didn't exist yet.

While Noah fought for every breath in that hospital bed, his father had already been building another family.

And he'd been planning, all along, to hang it right where my son used to be.
