The sun was blazing hot as expected on a hot, summer day, and we were both lying by the pool, soaking it all in. Fresh off of high school, we had just college standing in the way of us achieving a fit, summer body. But that won't be until a month or two, so for now, we're just relaxing. I exhale, the bright glare of the bright, summer sun perfect on my skin. Beside me, Chloe hums a tune, trying to distract us from the fact that we are almost melting into our towels. But it's all good. Beauty is pain, and this summer body isn't going to magically come by itself.

"Need anything, girls?" Josh's deep, rich voice breaks the silence, and I feel more than watch Chloe sit up eagerly.

Josh guffaws. "I've told you, Chloe. Call me Josh. Mr. Martell makes me feel...old."

Chloe bats her lashes, just the same way her sister, Kiara did when she brought Chloe over this morning. I stay still, suppressing my annoyance. I don't know why Chloe's crush on Josh rattles me so bad. I thought I'd have gotten used to how smitten she's been with him ever since they first met. Maybe it's because, deep down, I feel somewhat sorry for her. Josh would never reciprocate those feelings back. The man is damn well near forty, and we... we're only nineteen. We turned legal only a year ago.

Josh retreats into the house and returns with Chloe's bottle of water. He hands it over.

"Thank you," Chloe says coolly.

His eyes lingers on me for a while, before he leaves us alone. I ignore him, still reeling from the fight we had this morning concerning how I want to spend my summer. Apparently, Josh wants me to spend half of summer with mom in Miami, but I won't stick with my diet plan or sun tan in Miami without Chloe there to encourage me. And I sure as hell know that her mom won't let her travel with me.

We're done with high school forever, and college is next. Mom wants me to apply for schools in Miami, close to where she works, but I'd rather pick a school that's close here, in this town, close to Josh.

The thing with Mom is, she cherishes her job over family. It's been six months since she got an offer to be the chief accountant of a bank in Miami, and she's not visited us once. We only see and speak through video calls on Skype, which happens once every month. So going to live with her means I'll be on my own most of the time. I don't have it in me to be idle. It's not in my nature.

She rolls her eyes, and when I stand, pushes me into the water. I gasp, hitting the water with a splash.

"Are you nuts?" I scream when I come up for air. "What did I do?"

"Incoming!" She shrieks, jumping into the water as well, and making a whole mess. I try to get out of her way but it's too late, so we both tumble down.

"Stupid bitch," I laugh when we come up together.
