Chapter 1 of CROSSING THE BLUE LINE

The party was already out of control by the time Caden Mercer stepped in.

The club was packed wall to wall, bodies moving under strobing lights, music rattling the floor beneath his feet. Someone had rented out the entire venue for the night, and whoever made that call clearly had not anticipated what happened when two rival hockey teams ended up under the same roof hours after a championship defeat. The air smelled like sweat and spilled beer and something that was about to go very wrong.

Caden heard the shouting before he saw it.

He pushed through the crowd toward the sound, already knowing what he was walking into. His teammates had found their rivals near the bar, and the space between them had shrunk from tense to dangerous in the time it took someone to throw the wrong look across the room. Jaxon Calloway was right in the middle of it, jaw tight, chest out, the way he always looked right before something became a headline.

"Hey." Caden stepped between his teammate Dex and one of Jaxon's guys, putting a hand flat on Dex's chest. "Back up."

"He started it."

I don't care who started it. Back up.

Jaxon's eyes cut to him across the three feet of charged space between them, and for a moment the entire confrontation narrowed down to the two of them the way it always did. Four years of bad blood, brutal games, and public confrontations compressed into a single look.

"Call your boys off, Mercer," Jaxon said.

"You first, Calloway."

Neither of them moved.

Then the music cut.

The club owner appeared at the edge of the crowd, phone already in his hand, voice carrying over the sudden silence like a blade. He was not shouting. That was almost worse. He told them quietly and clearly that he had the police on speed dial, that he had spent a lot of money on this venue, and that he would not hesitate to end every career in this room if a single piece of furniture got touched.

The threat landed. Slowly, reluctantly, the two groups separated and retreated to opposite ends of the club. Caden steered his teammates back toward their booth, keeping his voice even, his hands steady, performing the version of himself that captains were supposed to be. Calm. In control. Unshakable.

He was none of those things.

His pulse was still hammering when he finally peeled away from the group and slipped toward the back of the club. He needed air. He needed thirty seconds where nobody was looking at him like he was supposed to have the answer. He pushed open a side door and stepped out into the quiet dark of the backyard.

He pulled out his vape, took a long slow breath, and let the night settle around him.

He had exactly four seconds of peace.

The side door swung open again and someone walked directly into him.

She stumbled back and he reached out on instinct, catching her arm before she went sideways. She yanked it back immediately, which told him everything he needed to know about her before she even looked up.

She was holding her shoes in one hand and a jacket in the other, and she had the very specific energy of someone executing a carefully planned escape that had just been ruined.

"Watch where you're standing," she said.

"I wasn't standing anywhere. I was here first."

She looked at him then, really looked, doing a quick scan that landed somewhere just short of impressed. Her eyes were dark and sharp and she had the kind of face that gave nothing away without choosing to.

"You're the one who broke up the fight in there," she said.

Guilty.

"Very heroic." She said it like the word meant something smaller than it usually did.

Caden leaned against the wall, watching her. "You were sneaking out."

"I was leaving."

"Through the back door. With your shoes off."

"I prefer a quiet exit."

"From a party you clearly didn't want to be at."

She tilted her head slightly. "Is there a question in there or are you just narrating?"

He almost smiled. Almost. "Why were you at a hockey party if you hate hockey parties?"

"I don't hate hockey parties." She paused. I'm indifferent to them. There's a difference.

"Right."

"And I don't know who you are," she added, and the way she said it made it sound less like a confession and more like a position she had decided to hold.

"Caden Mercer."

Nothing. Not a flicker.

He was not used to anything. He was not sure he had ever received nothing before, and the sensation was so genuinely strange that he found himself straightening up slightly, recalibrating.

"Should that mean something?" she asked.

Usually.

"Hm." She looked down and slipped one shoe back on, balancing effortlessly on one foot. Good for you, I guess.

He laughed. It came out before he could stop it, real and unguarded, and she glanced up at the sound like it surprised her too.

They stood there in the quiet for a moment, the muffled bass from inside pressing against the door, the night air cool between them. The adrenaline from earlier had not fully left his system and he was still running a little hot, a little reckless, in the way that big nights sometimes left him.

"You never said your name," he said.

"I know."

Are you going to?

She considered him for a long moment, something shifting behind her eyes, something that looked like a decision being made.

"No," she said. And then she stepped forward and kissed him.

It was not soft. It was not tentative. It was the kind of kiss that came from someone who had already decided exactly what they wanted and had stopped caring about the consequences. He kissed her back without thinking, one hand finding the wall beside her, the city noise falling completely away.

Then someone called his name from inside. Loud. Urgent.

He turned toward the sound automatically, the way you do when your name is called in that tone.

When he looked back, she was gone.

The side door swung gently on its hinges. The yard was empty. He stood there alone in the dark with the strange and certain feeling that he had just imagined the entire thing.

He went back inside.

The next afternoon Caden sat in the athletic director's office, shoulders tight, waiting. The fight had made it up the chain faster than he expected. He had barely settled into the chair across from Director Holt's desk when the door opened behind him.

He heard the footsteps first. Then the voice.

"Sorry we're late."

Caden turned.

Jaxon Calloway walked in looking like he owned the room. And walking two steps behind him, carrying his gym bag, was the girl from the backyard.

She stopped when she saw him. Her eyes went wide.

Director Holt looked up from his desk. "Miss, I'm sorry, this is a closed meeting. Your relation to this matter?"

Jaxon dropped a hand onto her shoulder without looking at her.

"This is my little sister," he said. She just transferred here.
