Bond By The Silverblood

🐺 CHAPTER FOURTEEN - The Alpha's Trial

The sanctuary was quiet at dawn, but Kael's voice was not.

"Again."

Lyra stumbled backward as Kael caught her wrist, using her momentum to guide her into the correct stance. His touch was firm but controlled, his breath steady despite the hours they'd spent training.

"I said again, Lyra. Your reflexes are too slow when you're tired. The Darkfangs won't show mercy."

She gritted her teeth. Sweat stung her eyes, her muscles burned, and the mark on her shoulder pulsed like it was alive.

"I'm trying!" she snapped.

Kael's eyes narrowed-not in anger, but in focus. "Trying isn't enough. The Oath gives you power, but without discipline, it will consume you."

Lyra closed her eyes briefly, inhaling deeply. The Oath responded instantly, flooding her senses with Kael's heartbeat, his wolf's growl, the tension in his shoulders.

She opened her eyes again. "Okay. Again."

Kael moved first-a blur of speed and shadow. Lyra raised her hands, summoning the silver energy of the Oath. This time, her shield formed faster, brighter. Kael's strike hit the barrier and rebounded with a surge of light that made him step back.

A slow smile tugged the corner of his mouth. "Better."

Lyra pushed herself upright. "That felt... different."

Kael circled her, studying her aura. "Your control is growing. But something happened when you channeled that last burst."

"What do you mean?"

He touched her wrist, and the Oath responded sharply-Lyra's breath caught, the silver glow intensifying.

"You didn't just shield," Kael murmured. "You linked directly to my energy. You took strength from me without meaning to."

Lyra's eyes widened. "I didn't... I wasn't trying to."

"I know," Kael said, stepping closer. "But the stronger the bond becomes, the more dangerous it can be. If you draw too much, it could drain me completely."

Her heartbeat faltered. "I don't want to hurt you."

"You won't." His thumb brushed the inside of her wrist-accidentally or deliberately, she couldn't tell. "But we have to learn the limits. Together."

Before she could answer, a distant howl ripped through the sanctuary. This one wasn't Darkfang-it was deeper, older, filled with authority.

Kael stiffened instantly.

"No," he muttered. "Not now."

Lyra's pulse raced. "What is it? Who is that?"

Kael's jaw clenched, his wolf flickering in his eyes. "The High Alpha."

Lyra paled. Every pack had an Alpha, but above all of them was one leader-chosen by blood, ancient right, and moon-given power.

"Why is he here?" she whispered.

Kael faced the forest, muscles tense. "Because I broke the Council's decree. I disobeyed the Moonblood. And I chose you."

Lyra stepped beside him. "Then we face him together."

Kael looked at her-really looked at her-and for the first time, fear crossed his features. Not fear for himself.

Fear for her.

"Lyra," he said quietly, "the High Alpha doesn't negotiate. His word is absolute. If he believes our bond is a threat... he will destroy the Oath."

A chill ran through her. "He'll kill me."

"And he will expect me to let him."

The air between them thickened, the Oath pulsing wildly.

Lyra lifted her chin. "I won't be afraid. Not of him. Not of any of them."

Kael stepped closer, his voice low and rough. "Then prepare yourself. Because the High Alpha will reach the sanctuary before nightfall."

Lyra swallowed hard. The ground trembled faintly-the first sign of approaching power.

The trial was coming.

Not against a Scout.

Not against a Darkfang.

But against the most powerful wolf in existence.

And this time...

the fate of their bond hung in the balance.
