Chapter 1 of Betrayed by the Don, Claimed by the Dark Emperor

Rebirth & Safety Protocol

The smell of blood was still thick in Vittoria’s lungs. Coppery, warm, and endlessly suffocating.

She gasped, her eyes snapping open as her body shot up from the mattress. Her hands violently clawed at her own chest, expecting to find the gaping hole where her heart had shattered, expecting to feel the slick, crimson tide of her son’s blood on her fingers.

Matteo.

A breathless sob tore from her throat as she frantically looked around. The room was bathed in the soft, golden hue of early morning sunlight filtering through the heavy silk drapes. This wasn't the cold, grimy pavement of the harbor. This wasn't the alleyway where the gunfire had echoed like the drums of hell. This was her bedroom in the Romano estate. The opulent cage where she had spent the last five years of her life playing the dutiful wife.

Vittoria threw off the velvet duvet, her bare feet hitting the cold marble floor. She ignored the trembling in her legs as she rushed across the hallway to the adjoining room.

She threw the door open, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

There, tucked under a blanket patterned with cartoon sports cars, was Matteo. Her four-year-old son. His chest rose and fell in a steady, peaceful rhythm. He was whole. He was unharmed.

Vittoria collapsed to her knees beside his bed, burying her face in the edge of his mattress to stifle the agonizing sob that wracked her body. She reached out with trembling hands, gently stroking his soft, dark curls. The warmth of his skin sent a jolt of electricity through her.

He’s alive. I’m alive.

The memories of the past life crashed into her mind like a devastating tidal wave. It had been this exact day. Marcello, her husband and the current Underboss of the syndicate, had walked into her room and claimed he needed to reassign their personal security detail for a "high-level negotiation." Like a fool, Vittoria had believed him. She had taken Matteo out for a simple walk in the city, thinking the lingering shadows of her father's empire still protected her.

But there was no negotiation. Marcello had pulled the guards so he could take his mistress, Camilla, shopping for a diamond ring in the city's most exclusive boutique. Camilla—the sweet, innocent civilian who was actually a viper, an assassin from a rival family planted to destroy them from the inside.

And because the guards were gone, a rival cartel had ambushed them. A stray bullet. A scream. Matteo’s tiny body going limp in her arms.

Vittoria’s grief morphed into a cold, hardened rage. The sadness that had paralyzed her in her past life vanished, replaced by a dark, simmering fury that belonged to the daughter of a true Capo. For years, she had suppressed her nature, trying to be the perfect, peaceful wife Marcello demanded, believing that violence only bred more violence.

But pacifism hadn't saved her son. It had only made them prey.

She stood up, her posture straightening. The reflection in the mirror caught her eye—a pale, terrified woman in a silk nightgown. But her eyes... her eyes were no longer those of a victim. They were the eyes of a predator waking from a long slumber.

I am Vittoria Rossi. Daughter of the late Don. And they will pay in blood.

A knock on the door pulled her from her dark thoughts.

"Vittoria?"

It was him. Marcello. His voice was smooth, a velvet lie that had once wrapped her in false security.

Vittoria took a deep breath, smoothing her features into a mask of calm indifference. She cracked the door open and stepped into the hallway, pulling the door shut behind her so he couldn't see Matteo.

Marcello stood there, dressed in a sharp, tailored charcoal suit. He looked every bit the powerful Underboss—handsome, imposing, with a charismatic smile that hid the rot in his soul.

"You're up early," he said, adjusting his cuffs. He didn't lean in to kiss her. He hadn't for months.

"Matteo had a bad dream," she lied smoothly, her voice eerily calm. "What is it, Marcello?"

He cleared his throat, not meeting her eyes. "Listen, I need to borrow your personal security detail today. Carlo and the boys. I have a highly sensitive sit-down with the Russians at the docks, and I need every capable gun I have."

A sensitive sit-down. At Tiffany’s. Vittoria felt the bile rise in her throat, but she swallowed it down. In her past life, she had argued, begged him not to leave them unprotected. It had only annoyed him.

"Of course," Vittoria said, her tone light and unquestioning. "Take them. The estate is secure enough. Matteo and I will just stay indoors today."

Marcello blinked, clearly taken aback by her easy compliance. A flicker of suspicion crossed his face, but his arrogance quickly smothered it. "Good. That's a good girl. I'll be back late tonight. Don't wait up."

He turned on his heel and walked away, the sound of his expensive leather shoes echoing down the marble hall.

Vittoria watched him until he disappeared around the corner. Enjoy your time with the viper, Marcello. It will be your last.

The moment the front gates of the estate closed behind his motorcade, Vittoria swung into action. She didn't have much time. Marcello's loyalists and Camilla's spies peppered the household staff. She needed to move before anyone realized what was happening.

She walked over to the grand fireplace in her bedroom, her fingers trailing along the intricate stone carvings until she found the hidden seam. She pressed hard, and with a soft click, a small compartment popped open.

Inside lay the remnants of her true legacy. A sleek, silver 9mm Beretta, fully loaded. A stack of burner phones. And a thick, black leather-bound ledger. Her father’s ledger.

Her father hadn't died of a sudden heart attack, as Marcello had claimed. In her past life, just before she died, the truth had surfaced—Marcello had poisoned him, slowly, systematically, to seize power. But her father, ever the paranoid king, had left a contingency plan. A safety protocol meant only for her.

She picked up the Beretta, the cold metal grounding her. She checked the magazine, the mechanical snick of the weapon a comforting rhythm.

She pulled out one of the burner phones and dialed a number she hadn't called in five years. The line rang twice before a gruff, gravelly voice answered.

"Who is this?"

"The sky over Sicily is bleeding," Vittoria said softly, reciting the old code phrase.

A long, heavy silence stretched over the line. Then, a sharp intake of breath. "Donna Vittoria. We thought... we thought you had forgotten us."

"I was asleep, Dante. But I'm awake now," Vittoria replied, her voice turning to ice. "Activate the Omega Protocol. I need extraction in twenty minutes. Clean, quiet, and untraceable. Have the old guard ready."

"Done. We are your shadows, Donna."

Vittoria hung up and crushed the phone under the heel of her boot, tossing the pieces into the fireplace.

She moved efficiently, packing only the essentials. A small duffel bag with cash, forged passports her father had prepared years ago, and a few sets of clothes. She didn't pack toys or pictures. The past was dead.

She went into Matteo's room and gently shook him awake.

"Mommy?" he mumbled, rubbing his sleepy eyes.

"We're going on an adventure, my little lion," she whispered, dressing him quickly in warm, dark clothes. "A secret mission. But you have to be very, very quiet. Can you do that for me?"

Matteo nodded solemnly, his big dark eyes wide with childish excitement.

Vittoria slipped the Beretta into the waistband of her jeans, pulling a long coat over her frame to conceal it. She grabbed the duffel bag and took Matteo's hand.

They didn't use the main stairs. Vittoria knew every secret passage and servant corridor in this house. They slipped through the walls like ghosts, avoiding the gaze of the maids and the remaining guards loyal to Marcello.

When they reached the hidden service exit by the old wine cellar, a nondescript black van was already idling in the alleyway. Dante, a massive, scarred man who had been her father's most loyal enforcer, stood by the sliding door.

When he saw Vittoria, he immediately dropped to one knee, bowing his head. "Donna."

"Get us out of here, Dante," Vittoria ordered, her eyes scanning the perimeter. "Before the rats realize the cage is empty."

Dante helped Matteo into the back seat, then closed the door firmly. Vittoria climbed into the front, her gaze fixed straight ahead. The van pulled out of the alley, blending seamlessly into the morning traffic.

As they drove away from the opulent estate, Vittoria didn't look back. The woman who had lived there was dead. Only the Queen remained.

Ten Hours Later.

The heavy oak doors of the Romano estate slammed open, the sound echoing like a gunshot through the silent foyer.

Marcello strode in, his tie loosened, a dark scowl marring his handsome face. He was angry. Camilla had been overly demanding today, and the supposed "surprise" attack by the rival cartel downtown had left his men scattered and paranoid.

"Vittoria!" he barked, expecting his wife to scurry down the stairs, full of anxious questions about his day.

Silence answered him.

"Vittoria!" he shouted again, his voice echoing off the high ceilings.

One of the housemaids scurried out from the kitchen, trembling. "S-Sir... the Madam... she is not here. We haven't seen her or the young master since this morning."

Marcello froze. "What do you mean, she's not here? Where the hell are the guards?"

"You... you took the guards, sir," the maid stammered.

A cold sense of dread washed over Marcello. He shoved past the maid, taking the stairs two at a time. He burst into Vittoria's bedroom.

It was immaculate. Too immaculate.

He threw open the closet doors. Her expensive dresses were still there, her jewelry untouched on the vanity. But a subtle emptiness hung in the air.

He rushed into Matteo's room. The bed was made. The boy was gone.

Marcello's breathing grew heavy as he walked back into the master bedroom. His eyes landed on the grand fireplace. The hidden compartment—a secret he had spent years trying to find—was wide open, hanging off its hinges. It was completely empty.

"No..." Marcello breathed, the reality of the situation crashing down on him.

Vittoria hadn't just left. She had vanished. And she had taken his leverage—the boy—with her.

His face twisted in a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. He reached under his jacket, drawing his customized Glock, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the handle.

"Find her!" Marcello roared, his voice shaking the very foundations of the house. "Lock down the city! Find my wife, or I'll put a bullet in every single one of your heads!"

The game had changed. And for the first time in his life, Marcello realized he wasn't the one playing it.

The Smuggler's Trap

The cold barrel of Marcello’s customized Glock was steady in his hand, aimed squarely at the shadows near his bedroom door.

"Who's there?" he hissed, his finger resting lightly on the trigger.

A figure stepped out of the gloom, hands raised defensively. It was Enzo, one of his top lieutenants, sweating profusely despite the cool air conditioning of the estate.

"Boss, it's me," Enzo stammered, his eyes darting to the gun. "I... I have news."

Marcello lowered the weapon slightly, though the murderous rage in his eyes didn't abate. "You found her? You found my wife?"

Enzo swallowed hard. "No, Boss. Donna Vittoria is... she's vanished. Our contacts in the police and the border patrol have nothing. But... she left a message. For you."

Enzo reached into his pocket and produced a small, encrypted burner phone. He set it on the marble vanity and took a step back.

Marcello snatched the phone and pressed the only programmed number. It rang once before a voice answered—cold, distorted, but undeniably hers.

"Looking for me, Marcello?" Vittoria’s voice echoed through the earpiece, lacking the usual warmth and subservience he had come to expect.

"Vittoria," he growled, pacing the room like a caged tiger. "What kind of foolish game are you playing? Bring my son back to the estate immediately. I won't tell you twice."

A soft, mocking laugh crackled over the line. "Your son? Matteo is my son. And we are never coming back to that mausoleum."

"You think you can run from me?" Marcello spat, his grip on the phone tightening until the plastic groaned. "I run this city. I run the Rossi syndicate. I have eyes on every street corner. You have nothing."

"I have the Port of Palermo," she replied smoothly.

Marcello stopped dead in his tracks. The Port of Palermo was the crown jewel of the Rossi syndicate's empire. It handled eighty percent of their smuggling operations—weapons, contraband, everything that funded his lavish lifestyle and paid the salaries of his men. The title and access codes were technically in Vittoria’s name, part of her father's iron-clad trust, but Marcello had always managed it.

"You wouldn't dare," Marcello whispered, his blood running cold.

"I've already locked the digital manifests," Vittoria said. "Your cargo ships are sitting in international waters. Your buyers are getting impatient. The Russians you were supposed to meet today? I hear they aren't very forgiving when their merchandise is delayed."

Marcello’s jaw clenched. The Russians. He had lied to Vittoria about the meeting, but the truth was, he did have a massive weapons shipment arriving this week. If he couldn't get it through the port, the Russians would have his head.

"What do you want, Vittoria?" he asked, forcing his voice into a calm, negotiating tone.

"A clean break. I want out of the syndicate, and I want you to officially relinquish all parental rights to Matteo. Do that, and I'll transfer the port control back to you."

Marcello’s mind raced. He didn't care about the boy. He never had. Matteo was just a pawn, a tool to keep the old guard loyal. But the port... he needed the port.

"Fine," Marcello lied. "Send the transfer documents to Enzo. But if you try to cross me, Vittoria, I swear to God..."

"Just make sure your signature is legible, Marcello. The ink will be the only thing keeping you alive."

The line went dead.

Marcello threw the phone against the wall, shattering it into pieces. He turned to Enzo, his eyes blazing with a newfound, venomous clarity.

"Sign whatever she sends," Marcello ordered. "Get control of the port. Then, find her. I don't care how many men it takes. Tear the city apart if you have to. When you find her... bring me the boy. And put a bullet in my dear wife's head."

Miles away, in a dimly lit warehouse on the outskirts of the city, Vittoria set down the receiver of the payphone. She pulled her coat tighter around her shoulders, the damp chill of the night seeping into her bones.

"Is it done, Donna?" Dante asked, stepping out from the shadows.

"He took the bait," Vittoria said, her eyes dark and calculating. "He'll sign the transfer documents by midnight. He thinks he's getting his precious smuggling route back."

Dante crossed his massive arms. "You're just going to give him the port? The Don's greatest asset?"

"I'm giving him a noose," Vittoria corrected softly. She reached into her coat and pulled out a manila folder, handing it to Dante. "This contains the true shipping manifests for the next three days. The shipment the Russians are bringing in. I've already leaked the encryption keys to an anonymous tip line at the FBI."

Dante’s eyes widened as he realized the brilliance of the plan. "The feds. When Marcello brings the ships into the port..."

"The FBI will be waiting," Vittoria finished. "He'll lose the cargo, he'll lose the Russians' trust, and he'll be facing federal indictments. He wanted to play the powerful Underboss. Let him deal with the consequences."

For the first time since they had fled the estate, a small, genuine smile touched Vittoria's lips. In her past life, she had been blind to Marcello's greed. Now, she was using it as a weapon against him.

She turned and walked towards the back of the warehouse, where a makeshift living area had been set up. Matteo was asleep on a cot, wrapped in thick blankets, oblivious to the war his mother was waging in the shadows.

Vittoria sat beside him, gently brushing a stray curl from his forehead. I will burn the whole world down before I let them hurt you again, she vowed silently.

The next forty-eight hours passed in a tense, suffocating quiet. Vittoria and her loyalists remained hidden, watching the news broadcasts on a small, static-filled television.

It happened on the third night.

Breaking News, the reporter's voice crackled. A massive joint operation by the FBI and the Coast Guard has resulted in the seizure of over fifty million dollars in illegal weapons at the Port of Palermo. Several high-ranking members of local organized crime syndicates have been arrested...

Vittoria watched as footage of Marcello’s men being handcuffed and shoved into the back of federal vehicles played on the screen.

"Checkmate," she whispered.

But her victory was short-lived.

An hour later, Dante burst into the room, his face pale—a rare sight for the hardened enforcer.

"Donna," he said, his voice tight with urgency. "We have a problem. A massive problem."

Vittoria stood up, her hand instinctively dropping to the Beretta at her waist. "What is it?"

"The Russians," Dante said. "They aren't just angry about the seized weapons. In the chaos of the FBI raid, one of the Russian boss's nephews was killed in a firefight with Marcello's men."

Vittoria’s blood ran cold. The Russian Bratva didn't play by the same rules as the Italian syndicates. They were ruthless, and they demanded an eye for an eye.

"They've issued a blood feud against the Rossi syndicate," Dante continued grimly. "They want Marcello's head. Or..."

"Or what?" Vittoria demanded.

"Or the head of his heir," Dante finished quietly.

The silence in the room was deafening. Vittoria looked at Matteo, still sleeping peacefully on the cot.

Marcello was a coward. He would never offer his own life to the Russians. He would need a scapegoat. A sacrifice to appease the Bratva and save his own skin. And the only heir recognized by the syndicate was Matteo.

He wouldn't, a small, naive part of her whispered. He's a monster, but surely he wouldn't hand over a four-year-old child to the wolves.

But the hardened survivor in her knew the truth. Marcello would do whatever it took to survive. He would sacrifice Matteo in a heartbeat, just as he had sacrificed her father.

"He's coming for the boy," Vittoria said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, deadly register.

Suddenly, the heavy iron door of the warehouse rattled.

Dante drew his weapon, motioning for the two other loyalists in the room to take cover. "They've found us."

Vittoria rushed to the cot, scooping Matteo into her arms. The boy woke up with a startled cry.

"Shh, baby, it's okay," she hushed him, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Outside, the sound of heavy boots echoed against the concrete. Through the frosted, grimy windows near the ceiling, Vittoria could see the sweeping beams of tactical flashlights.

"Donna Vittoria!" a voice boomed from a megaphone outside. It was Enzo. "The building is surrounded! Send the boy out, and Marcello promises you will not be harmed! Resist, and we burn the place to the ground!"

Vittoria tightened her grip on her son, pulling her gun with her free hand. The air grew thick with the promise of violence.

The trap she had set for Marcello had caught a much deadlier beast. And now, the wolves were at the door.

Blood for Blood

The warehouse was completely surrounded. Red and blue tactical lasers sliced through the dusty air, illuminating the grim reality of their situation. There were at least thirty men out there, heavily armed and loyal to a man who had lost his mind to fear.

Dante raised his assault rifle, his jaw set in a hard line. "Give the word, Donna. I'll take as many of them to hell with me as I can."

Vittoria looked down at Matteo. The boy was trembling, clutching the fabric of her coat with tiny, white-knuckled fists. A shootout here meant certain death. Even if Dante managed to take down ten men, a stray bullet would inevitably find them. She couldn't risk her son. Not again.

"Stand down, Dante," Vittoria ordered, her voice eerily calm amidst the chaos.

Dante snapped his head toward her in disbelief. "Donna! They'll kill you! They'll give the boy to the Russians!"

"They have to take us to Marcello first," she replied, slipping the Beretta from her waistband and placing it carefull
