Chapter 1 of After My Mate Destroyed My Wolf

The bond breaks at 11:47 PM on the night I was supposed to become his Luna.

Not all at once. It goes cold first—that faint pull in my chest I have spent ten years naming, tending, believing in. One moment it hums, low and constant as a heartbeat I borrowed. The next it is wrong. Off-pitch. Like pressing your tongue to a tooth that has gone dead at the root.

I am standing in the corridor outside Dominic's study. The door is two inches open. I came to find him before the ceremony. I came because I wanted to see his face before everything changed.

His voice reaches me before I can knock.

"The timing works. Seraphina arrives tomorrow. By then the transition should be clean."

Kasen's voice, lower: "And the girl?"

A pause. Not a guilty one. The pause of a man reviewing a logistical detail.

"Quinn was never the mate bond. She was always the bloodline. The intimacy kept her bonded enough to be willing. That's all it needed to do."

All it needed to do.

I press my back flat against the wall. The corridor is dark. My ceremonial dress—white, the one I pressed twice because I kept finding imaginary wrinkles—rustles against my legs.

Kasen again: "She won't take it quietly."

"She'll take it the way she takes everything," Dominic says. "Because she doesn't have anywhere else to go."

My wolf comes up so fast I lose a breath. Fur crackles along my forearms, visible even in the dark—silver-pale, wrong, too early, uncontrolled. A sound builds in my throat. Low. Involuntary. I clamp my jaw shut and slam my wolf back down by sheer will, the way I have slammed her down a hundred times in pack meetings when ranked wolves looked through me, the way I learned to do it so young I stopped noticing the cost.

I press my thumb hard into the center of my opposite palm. Ground. Floor. Stone under my feet.

I do not run. I do not open the door. I do not give him the gift of seeing my face right now.

I walk back to my room, strip the white dress, fold it once, and set it on the chair. Then I sit on the edge of my cot and I wait for dawn with my hands in my lap and my wolf bleeding quietly inside me.

---

He does it in the ceremonial clearing. Full pack. Three hundred wolves in ranked lines, morning light flat and grey through the pines.

I already know what is coming. That is the only reason I am still standing when he opens his mouth.

"I, Dominic, Alpha of Shadowvale, reject you, Quinn Murphy, as my mate."

The incomplete bond does not break. It tears. There is no other word for it—a tearing, silver-wire sensation through the center of my chest, and then I am on the ground and I don't remember falling. The sound that comes out of me is not a word. It is not even a cry. It is the sound a wolf makes when something is removed from it without anesthetic.

I hear, through the ringing, the wet sound of a bite.

Seraphina makes a soft noise. Pleased. Satisfied.

I press both palms flat against the packed earth. The dirt is cold. My fingers find a root, something real, and I hold it.

Somewhere to my left, Maren—small, Omega-ranked, one of the pups I grew up beside in the sanctuary den—takes a step toward me. Kasen's hand lands on her shoulder. She stops.

No one else moves.

I push myself upright. It takes longer than it should. My legs are wrong, my chest is a hollow cavity where ten years used to live, and my wolf is entirely silent for the first time since she was born. But I get up. I do not look at Dominic. I do not look at Seraphina with his mark still glistening on her neck.

I walk to the sanctuary den.

It takes me twenty minutes. When I get there, the youngest pups are still asleep, breathing in the familiar dark, unaware. I sit against the far wall and I do what I have always done when the world removes something from me: I take inventory.

My body. Functional, if broken in places I have not yet catalogued.

My combat knowledge. Mine. Not in any record Kasen controls.

My hands. Still working.

The mind-link. Not fully severed. He was sloppy, or arrogant, or both.

And one thing more—something I have not told anyone, something that has lived in my marrow since the night I threw myself into a silver-laced ambush meant for him three years ago and absorbed enough silver to scar something fundamental. He does not know what that cost. He does not know what he spent.

He will.

---

The next morning, Seraphina stands at the pack-house entrance with Dominic's arm under her hand and announces my new rank to a cluster of warriors who have the decency to look at the ground.

"Omega. Effective immediately. Labor rotation, starting today."

She delivers it pleasantly. Her eyes are on my face, waiting.

My wolf stirs—faint, furious, a single tremor—and I let her surface just enough that Seraphina can see it in my eyes before I put her back.

I say nothing. I accept the assignment.

The absence of a breakdown moves across Seraphina's face like a cloud crossing a cold sun. There, then gone, replaced by the pleasant expression.

But I saw it.

I file it next to everything else I am collecting.

Behind her, through the pack-house window, I catch Kasen watching me with the flat attention of a man crossing something off a list—already moving on to whatever comes next.
