After My Alpha Took His Beta to Bed

The gown arrived at four in the afternoon.

I stood in my quarters while the seamstress made final adjustments—silver silk, hand-beaded, the kind of dress that photographs well under banquet lighting. She pinned the hem and stepped back to admire her work. I looked at my reflection. The woman staring back looked exactly like a Luna celebrating ten years of a fated bond.

I wondered if anyone would notice that I had chosen a dress with no train. Nothing that would slow me down.

"Beautiful, Luna," the seamstress said. "Alpha Evan will be speechless."

I smiled. "Thank you."

She packed her supplies and left. I stood alone in front of the mirror for a long moment, touching the scar beneath the silk. Then I turned away and began the final preparations.

The encrypted tablet went into the hidden compartment in my study. The leather notebook—ten years of strategy notes—into the small bag Declan would collect at eight forty-five. My mother's pendant around my neck, tucked beneath the gown's neckline where no one would see it.

I did not pack sentiment. I packed survival.

At six thirty, I walked down to the banquet hall.

---

The hall was already filling when I arrived.

Five hundred wolves, allied Alphas, pack elders—all dressed in formal attire, all wearing the careful expressions of people navigating a high-stakes political event. The air smelled like expensive cologne and territorial tension. I moved through the crowd with Luna composure, greeting allies, acknowledging elders, my face a mask of perfect celebration.

Evan was near the dais, speaking with the Alpha of the Ridgeline Pack. He looked up when I entered. Our eyes met across the room. He smiled—genuine warmth, the kind that used to make my wolf sing—and gestured for me to join him.

I walked over. Let him take my hand. Let him introduce me to the Ridgeline Alpha as if we were still the formidable pair everyone believed us to be.

"Ten years," the Ridgeline Alpha said, raising his glass. "An extraordinary bond."

"Extraordinary," I agreed.

The word sat in my mouth like ash.

Evan's hand tightened on mine. Possessive. Proud. Completely oblivious.

Across the hall, I caught sight of Lilian.

She had positioned herself at a table with clear sightlines to the dais—eastern section, maximum visibility, exactly where someone who wanted to be noticed would sit. Her gown was deep emerald, cut to emphasize the curve of her belly. Subtle. Calculated. She was speaking to three she-wolves I recognized from her inner circle, leaning in close, her hand resting on her stomach in a gesture that was becoming her signature.

I watched her for exactly three seconds. Then I turned back to Evan and the Ridgeline Alpha and continued the performance.

---

The reception stretched on.

I moved through the required conversations with mechanical precision. Smiled at the right moments. Laughed at the appropriate jokes. Accepted congratulations on our tenth anniversary with gracious nods. My wolf was silent. Not in pain anymore. Just... waiting.

At seven fifteen, I noticed him.

Kingsley Shaw stood near the western entrance, dressed in formal Lycan Council attire—dark suit, no ornamentation, the kind of restraint that somehow made his presence more commanding rather than less. He was not mingling. He was observing. His gaze moved across the hall with the unhurried attention of someone who noticed everything and revealed nothing.

Our eyes met.

I felt something shift. Not the mate-bond pull—I had never felt that with him, would never feel it while Evan's bond still existed—but something quieter. Recognition of a different kind. He saw me. Not the Luna performing for five hundred wolves. Me.

I looked away first. Returned to the conversation I was supposed to be having. But I felt his attention remain, steady and patient, from across the room.

---

At eight thirty, my phone buzzed.

I excused myself from the table—something about checking the evening's schedule—and stepped into the corridor outside the banquet hall. Pulled out my phone. The she-wolf group chat notification glowed on the screen.

I opened it.

The photo loaded. Lilian at her table, gown perfectly arranged, hand on her belly, expression radiating quiet triumph. The caption: *The future Luna of Silvercrest is already here.*

I stared at the screen.

Around me, I could hear phones buzzing. The message spreading. She-wolves checking their devices, whispering to each other, the gossip igniting like wildfire.

I read the caption again. Let it sit. Let the rage that should have come stay exactly where it had been for weeks now—buried beneath cold, surgical clarity.

Then I walked back into the banquet hall.

The room had shifted. Conversations had fractured into smaller, more urgent clusters. Eyes darted toward Lilian's table, then toward me, then away. The tension was palpable. She had done exactly what she intended—created a moment that demanded response, that forced the pack to choose sides, that positioned her claim as inevitable.

I walked to my seat at the dais. Set my phone face-down on the table. Picked up my wine glass. Took a single, measured sip.

Across the room, Declan Voss met my eyes.

I gave the smallest nod.

He turned and walked toward the eastern exit. Casual. Unhurried. Just another warrior moving through the crowd. Within thirty seconds, I saw Kira slip out through the western doors. Then another warrior. Then another. Twelve wolves moving to their positions with the efficiency of a plan executed flawlessly.

No one noticed. They were all watching Lilian.

I set down my wine glass and stood. The hall quieted. Five hundred wolves turned toward the dais. Evan looked up at me, surprised—the speeches were not scheduled until nine thirty—but I was already moving toward the center platform.

The Luna's position. Where everyone could see me.

I smoothed my gown. Touched the pendant beneath the silk. And prepared to speak the words that would end everything.
