Chapter 1 of After My Alpha Took His Beta to Bed

The scent hit me at eleven forty-three at night.

I was sitting at my desk in the Luna's private quarters, reviewing next week's alliance meeting agenda, when the mate bond flared with a sensory link so vivid it felt like being doused in ice water. Evan's scent—pine and leather and the particular musk that had been mine alone for ten years—threaded through with something else. Another she-wolf. Not the faint, deniable traces I had been catching for weeks and telling myself were explainable. This was intimate. Total. The kind of scent saturation that comes from skin on skin, from mouths and hands and bodies pressed close enough to leave no doubt.

My wolf howled inside my mind. The sound was so raw, so anguished, that I actually flinched. My hand went to the scar on my left ribs—old habit, private talisman—and I pressed hard enough to feel the ridge of tissue through my shirt.

I did not move for a long time. I sat very still and let the scent information settle into certainty. Then I stood, walked to my desk drawer, and pulled out the tablet I used for pack house security access.

The footage was not hard to find. Evan's office. Camera angle from the upper corner. Time stamp: two hours ago.

I watched in dead silence.

Evan and Lilian Fox. His Beta-ranked assistant. Her back against his desk, his hands in her hair, his mouth on her neck. The way she tilted her head to give him better access. The way he touched her—casual, familiar, like this was not the first time or the tenth. Like this was something they had been doing long enough to develop rhythm.

I watched the entire recording. Eight minutes and thirty-two seconds. I did not pause it. I did not look away. When it ended, I set the tablet down on my desk, very carefully, and stared at the blank screen.

Something behind my eyes changed. I felt it happen. It was not rage—rage would have been loud, hot, immediate. This was colder. Quieter. A decision being made in a place deeper than thought.

I had given this bond everything. Ten years. My body. My wolf. The pregnancy I lost during the rogue raid because I shifted to protect the western flank while Evan was fighting on the eastern perimeter. The fact that I could never carry another child because of that night. The empire we built from a twenty-wolf splinter group into five hundred wolves who answered to our combined authority. I had bled for Silvercrest. I had bled for him.

And he had taken the most sacred bond a werewolf can have and treated it like something that would always be there, no matter what he did.

I stood. Walked to the window. Looked out over the pack house grounds—the training fields I had designed, the warrior barracks I had funded, the alliance hall where I had negotiated treaties that kept this pack safe and prosperous.

My wolf whimpered. I could feel her inside me, confused and in pain, reaching for the bond that was supposed to anchor us and finding only betrayal threaded through every fiber of it.

"I know," I whispered to her. "I know."

I touched the scar on my ribs again. Pressed until it hurt.

Then I pulled out my phone and made an appointment with the pack Healer for first thing in the morning.

---

The Healer's clinic was in the east wing of the pack house, quiet and private. I arrived at dawn, before most of the pack was awake. The Healer—an older she-wolf named Maren who had been with Silvercrest since the early days—greeted me with the calm professionalism I had always appreciated.

"Luna," she said. "What brings you in?"

"Routine check," I said. My voice was steady. "My wolf has felt... off lately. I wanted to make sure everything is fine."

Maren gestured to the examination table. I sat. She placed her hands on either side of my head—the traditional Healer diagnostic position—and closed her eyes.

The silence stretched. When she opened her eyes again, her expression was grave.

"Fiona," she said quietly. "Your wolf is deteriorating."

I did not react. I had suspected as much. "How bad?"

"Rapid bond-decay syndrome." Maren's voice was careful, clinical. "It is rare, but it happens when a mate bond is... compromised. The psychic trauma accelerates the wolf's decline toward dormancy. If it continues unchecked, your wolf could go permanently silent."

Permanently silent. The words landed like stones.

"Can it be stopped?" I asked.

Maren hesitated. That hesitation told me everything.

"There is one option," she said finally. "But it is forbidden. The Moonveil Pack has a Healer—legendary, operates outside Lycan Council jurisdiction—who can sever a mate bond entirely. Erase the trauma-linked memory. It is irreversible. The Council has tried to criminalize it, but the Healer continues practicing for wolves who have no other choice."

I looked at her steadily. "I want the contact."

Maren studied my face for a long moment. Then she nodded, pulled out a piece of paper, and wrote down a single line: an encrypted communication channel.

"Be certain, Fiona," she said. "Once it is done, there is no going back."

"I am certain," I said.

That night, alone in my quarters, I sent the message to Moonveil.

---

The response came within hours.

The Moonveil Healer's message was brief and precise. The procedure was possible. The side effects were significant: complete erasure of all emotional memory tied to the bond—not just the betrayal, but the decade of shared life, the recognition at sixteen, the years of building Silvercrest together. Sporadic memory gaps during recovery. Possible identity instability.

The Healer asked once, clearly: *Are you certain?*

I typed my reply without hesitation. *Yes.*

We set the date. The night after Silvercrest's tenth Mate Bond Anniversary Banquet.

The irony was not lost on me. The night meant to celebrate our bond would be the night I destroyed it.

I closed the message, set my phone down, and looked at my reflection in the darkened window.

The woman looking back at me was composed. Calm. A Luna who had spent ten years leading five hundred wolves with authority that inspired devotion rather than fear.

But behind my eyes, something had already begun to shift.

I was done bleeding in silence.
