Chapter 1 of After My Alpha Replaced Me With His Mistress

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night.

I was standing beside the Alpha seat when the cold hit my neck. Not pain—not yet. Just cold, like someone pressed ice against the mark Lawson left three years ago during our Mate Ceremony. The mark that was supposed to be permanent.

The Ironmaw great hall was packed. Every ranked wolf in the territory had shown up for tonight's gathering. I'd spent the afternoon making sure the hall was ready—tables arranged, food prepared, everything in order the way a Luna was supposed to. My pendant hung against my collarbone, the silver wolf engraved on its surface catching the light. I wore the dark green dress Lawson once said he liked. I'd braided my hair the way he preferred.

But the whispers tonight were different. Sharper. The Gamma she-wolf, Dara Finch, kept glancing at the entrance with a smile I didn't recognize. The Beta's mate leaned close to another ranked female and murmured something that made them both look at me and away too quickly.

I pressed my thumb against the scar on my left palm. An old habit. The thin white line I'd gotten years ago, back in the Silvercrest court before I ran. Before I became Eleanora Voss instead of Eleanora Silvercrest. Before I chose love over a crown.

The air in the hall felt wrong. Too still. Like everyone was waiting for something.

Then Lawson walked in.

He was late. That wasn't unusual. But Mckenzie Hale was on his arm, her hand resting against his sleeve with the ease of someone who'd done it a hundred times before. Her red dress clung to her body. Her dark hair fell in perfect waves. She smiled at the pack like she already owned them.

And Lawson—

His collar was open. His neck was bare. And I could smell her all over him.

Not just perfume. Not just proximity. Her scent was layered into his skin like she'd marked every inch of him. Vanilla and something sharper, something that made my wolf—the wolf I'd kept buried under wolfsbane for three years—stir for the first time in months.

I stood perfectly still. My court training held. I didn't move. Didn't speak. Just watched as my mate walked past me without a glance and pulled Mckenzie forward.

He seated her in the Luna's chair.

My chair.

The hall went silent. Not the comfortable silence of a pack at rest. The stunned, breathless silence of wolves who couldn't believe what they were seeing.

I was still standing beside the Alpha seat. My hand was still resting on the back of the chair I'd sat in for three years. The chair I'd occupied while I quietly used every Silvercrest alliance I had to build Lawson's empire. Every treaty. Every trade route. Every border that stayed safe because I made one phone call to the right royal contact.

He thought he'd done it all himself.

Mckenzie settled into the Luna's chair like she'd been waiting for it her whole life. She crossed her legs. Smoothed her dress. Looked out at the pack with a smile that said, This is mine now.

Lawson stepped forward. His voice carried across the hall with the Alpha tone I used to think was attractive. Now it just sounded like noise.

"I have an announcement," he said.

I didn't move. Couldn't. The bond in my chest was pulling tighter and tighter, like a rope about to snap.

"Eleanora has served this pack to the best of her ability," Lawson continued. His eyes finally found mine. There was nothing in them. No regret. No hesitation. Just the flat certainty of a man who'd already made his decision and didn't care what it cost. "But Ironmaw needs a Luna with strength. A Luna with a wolf."

Mckenzie's smile widened.

The cold on my neck spread. Down my spine. Into my chest.

"I, Lawson Crane, Alpha of Ironmaw Pack," he said, and the formal cadence of the rejection vow made every wolf in the hall go rigid, "reject you, Eleanora, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck turned to ice.

Then it ripped.

I'd heard about bond severance. Heard it described as pain. But this wasn't pain. This was something tearing out of my chest from the inside. The bond—three years of smoked cedar and iron woven through every breath I took—shredded like fabric caught on a blade. It didn't break clean. It hemorrhaged.

My knees buckled. I went down hard on the stone floor, one hand pressed against the mark that was no longer warm, no longer his. The other hand hit the ground to keep me from collapsing completely.

I couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. The bond was draining out of me and taking everything with it. Every morning I woke up next to him. Every night I fell asleep listening to his heartbeat. Every moment I believed he loved me.

Gone.

Mckenzie laughed. A soft, delighted sound that carried across the silent hall.

I looked up. Lawson was watching me with his arms folded. Waiting for me to get up. Waiting for me to leave.

Pack members turned their faces away. No one moved to help. No one spoke.

I forced myself to breathe. In. Out. The way I'd learned in the Silvercrest court when I had to sit through hours of diplomatic sessions without showing a single emotion.

My hand was still pressed against the mark. It was cold. Empty. Like a door that used to open into warmth and now opened into nothing.

I looked at Lawson. At the man I'd given up a throne for. The man I'd spent three years building into something powerful while he dismissed me as wolf-less and useless.

"Do you remember," I said quietly, my voice steady despite the way my chest was caving in, "what you swore at our Mate Ceremony?"

He stared at me. Then he laughed.

It was a real laugh. Loud and genuine, like I'd just told the funniest joke he'd ever heard.

"Get out," he said.
