Chapter 1 of After My Alpha Rejected Our Secret Mate Bond

The bond went cold at half past nine.

I was folding laundry in the little cabin Carter had rented for me at the edge of Ironcliff territory when I felt it. A flicker. Like a light bulb about to die. I stopped with one of his shirts still in my hands and reached down the mind-link the way I had a thousand times before.

*Carter?*

A pause. Too long.

*Busy, Ana. Later.*

That was all. Three words. No warmth, no soft edge, no small private thing tucked in behind the syllables the way he usually did. I stood there holding his shirt against my chest and tried to convince myself I was imagining it.

I am Anastasia. Twenty-two years old. No pack, no last name anyone respects. For three years I have been Alpha Carter Blackwood's hidden mate — marked in secret under the pines behind this cabin, loved in whispers, promised forever in a voice only I could hear. He told me the secrecy was to protect me. I believed him because I wanted to.

I folded the shirt. Then I unfolded it and folded it again.

An hour later I was still standing at the window when two Ironcliff guards passed on the gravel road below. Their voices carried in the cold air.

"…ceremony tonight. Restricted grounds. Alpha's orders."

"Full circle?"

"Full circle. Inner ring only."

My stomach dropped through the floor.

I did not think. I pulled a dark hoodie over my head, slipped out the back, and cut into the treeline. The perimeter checkpoint was manned by a boy I had seen Carter train — I knew the blind seconds in his patrol pattern by heart, because Carter had once shown me, laughing, holding my hand. I used those seconds now and did not laugh.

The torchlight guided me. Deep into Ironcliff, past the old stones, past the birch grove where he first pressed his mouth to my neck and said *mine*. My breath came shallow. My wolf paced under my skin and would not settle.

When I reached the ceremonial clearing I stopped behind a wide oak and made myself look.

Carter stood in the center of the ring. Torchlight on his jaw. His inner circle around him — Owen, the Gammas, the elders with their silver braids. And across from him, in a pale ceremonial dress that caught the fire like water, stood Coraline Adams.

The woman raised in my place.

She was smiling up at him. He held her hands.

"…take you, Coraline Adams, as my chosen Luna," Carter was saying. His voice was steady. Practiced. "To stand beside me. To bind our packs. To—"

I stepped out of the trees.

I did not mean to. My body walked me forward before my head could stop it. Twigs cracked under my boots. Heads turned. A low growl went through the circle like a wind.

Carter turned last.

He saw me.

And his face — Moon Goddess, his face. I had been ready for guilt. I had been ready for shame, for the horror of a man caught. What I was not ready for was the flat, cold anger that flooded his eyes when they landed on mine. Like I was a stain on a floor he had just cleaned.

"Carter." My voice came out thin. "Carter, what is this."

He did not answer me. He looked past me, at his Beta. "Owen. Get her out."

"Carter, please — through the bond, three years, you *told* me — "

"*Enough.*"

The Alpha tone hit me like a physical wall. My knees buckled. My throat closed around the rest of the sentence. I have felt his Alpha voice before, in play, on my skin at night, gentle. I had never felt it aimed at me like a blade.

I could not speak. I could only stand there swaying with tears running down my face while every wolf in that clearing watched.

Behind me, footsteps.

Heavy. Fast.

I turned in time to see a man I did not know — big, weathered, rogue-eyed — cover the distance between us in three long strides. Coraline's voice cut the air behind him, high and pleased. "Koen — she's disturbing the ceremony — "

Hands like clamps on my upper arms.

He did not hesitate. He carried me backward across the balcony's stone tiles as if I weighed nothing and threw me over the low iron railing the way a man throws out spoiled meat.

Air. Then no air.

I remember the flip of the world. I remember seeing the torches upside down. I remember, at the very top of the fall, looking back up over the railing and finding Carter's face for one last second — and watching him turn back to Coraline without letting his eyes follow me down.

Then the ground.

My leg made a sound a leg should not make.

***

I came back to myself in pieces.

White ceiling. Bare walls. A metal cot. The smell of antiseptic and old wood. Not the healer's wing — I knew the healer's wing, it had windows and lavender and the low voices of nurses. This room had none of that. This room was a place you put something you did not want anyone to find.

A woman moved at the foot of the cot. Gray hair pulled back tight. Healer's apron. I knew her — Miriam Voss, Ironcliff's senior healer. She had stitched Carter's shoulder once while I hid in the closet.

She did not look at me.

She worked in silence, splinting my leg with quick clean movements. Every touch sent a white spike of pain up my hip. I bit through the inside of my cheek and tasted iron.

"Miriam." My voice was a scrape. "How bad."

Her hands did not stop. Her eyes did not lift.

"Miriam, please. How bad is it."

Nothing.

She finished the splint, gathered her tools, and walked out. The door clicked shut behind her with the soft, final sound of a lock finding its home.

I lay in the silence and reached, one more time, down the mind-link.

*Carter.*

What came back was not silence.

Silence would have been kinder. Silence I could have hoped through. What came back was a thin corroded hum, a channel gone gray at the edges, as if something inside the bond was rusting shut while I lay there listening to it.

*Carter. It's me. Please.*

The hum thickened. Frayed. And underneath — very faint, very far — I could feel him. Not answering. Not turning away, exactly. Just… choosing not to hear me.

I pressed my palm flat against my sternum, over the place where the bond had lived warm for three years, and I felt it beginning, very quietly, to die.
