Chapter 1 of After My Alpha Framed Me for His Father's Death

The bond snapped shut around my legs at 6:47 a.m., three feet from the silver-wire perimeter.

I had my kit open in my palm—wolfsbane neutralizer in the left vial, copper shears in the right—and the rogue's trap laid out in front of me like sheet music I had already learned by heart. Twelve wires. Two decoys. One live detonator threaded through the hostage's collar. I could smell the wolfsbane cutting under the silver, sharp and green, and beneath that the hostage's fear-sweat and something else, something older, iron and cedar and a bloodline that pinged wrong against the back of my throat.

I would think about that wrong-note scent later. I did not have later.

I took my next step, and Stefan drove the command through the mate bond like a nail.

*Stand down.*

His Alpha tone did not arrive as sound. It arrived inside my bones. My knee locked mid-lift. My ankle refused the ground. The shears in my right hand went still as glass. I felt my own muscles turn against me one by one, the way a body drowns—first the calves, then the thighs, then the diaphragm tightening around a breath I couldn't finish. Behind me, thirty pack members made a single, small noise, like a door being softly closed.

Inside my chest my wolf woke up screaming.

She threw herself at the walls of the command and bounced. She threw herself again. I felt her ribs against the inside of mine, felt her voice try to shape a word and fail. *No—no—no—* A thin thread of warmth surfaced under my sternum, a single syllable I couldn't quite catch, and then Stefan tightened his grip through the bond and even that went dark.

Tears slid down my face because my tear ducts were the only part of me he had forgotten to freeze.

"Heidi." Stefan's voice, spoken aloud this time, casual. He did not turn to look at me. "You're up."

Heidi stepped past my locked shoulder. She smelled like his sheets. She was wearing my role and my gear-belt and her hands were already shaking before she reached the first wire. I watched her fingers tremble over the detonator's copper housing. I watched her breathe wrong. I watched her, and I could not open my mouth to say *the third wire from the left, not the second, the third,* because my jaw belonged to my mate and my mate had decided.

She touched the second wire.

The world came apart in white.

Silver went up in a column, wolfsbane going with it in a green haze that made every wolf in the treeline flinch. The hostage did not scream. There was not enough of him left to scream. The blast wave hit my chest and I felt nothing because I was already frozen, a woman-shaped statue crying on a hill.

Stefan released me.

I stumbled forward two steps before my legs remembered they were mine. He turned, finally, and looked at me with the flat, conversational calm of a man reading a receipt.

"Well." A small shrug. "Heidi put your broken old man out of his misery. That's a mercy, Alana. He'd been a burden long enough."

I did not answer him. My wolf was too quiet to answer him. But my nose was already working, already scenting the smoke, and the wrong-note under the wolfsbane was not wrong at all. It was familiar. It was iron and cedar and the specific bloodline warmth I had known since I was a child playing in the Cooper family's kitchen.

It was Alfredo.

I kept my face empty. I have had a lifetime of practice.

---

He made me stand for it that night.

The pack gathered in the clearing with torches, the way old rituals demand, and Stefan stood in the center with Heidi tucked half-behind his shoulder and said the words with the cadence of a man consolidating a kingdom.

"I, Stefan Cooper, Alpha of the Ironclad Pack, reject you, Alana Burke, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went cold first.

Then it went hollow—the specific hollow of a door closing on an empty room. Then it split. I felt the skin part in a clean seam, felt something that was not quite blood well up against my collarbone, felt my wolf make one last sound inside me like a candle being pinched. My knees hit the dirt. My hands hit the dirt. Somewhere very far away Buster made a low sound in his throat that no one else in the pack was brave enough to make.

No one moved toward me.

I counted to four with my forehead against the ground. Then I put one palm flat. Then the other. Then I stood up on my own legs, because there were no other legs available.

I walked to Buster. I took his lead. I did not cover the open mark. I did not look at Stefan. I walked past the torches and past the tree line and past the boundary stone and I kept walking until Ironclad was behind me and the road was under my feet.

Before I left the territory entirely, I turned back toward the blast site.

The remains were still warm. I crouched. I closed my eyes and let my ruined nose do the last piece of work it would ever do for this pack. Iron. Cedar. Alfredo. Unmistakable.

Half-melted against what had been a throat lay a silver coin on a blackened chain. I knew that coin. Stefan had pressed it into his father's palm at fourteen, grinning, dirt still on his knuckles from his first successful run.

I took the healer's documentation lens from my belt and photographed it. Once. Twice. Three times, from three angles, the way I had been trained to document a wound.

I slid the lens into my inner pocket, next to the cold place where the mark used to be warm.

Inside my chest, so faint I almost missed it, my wolf surfaced one syllable through the dark.

*Wait.*

Buster's lead tightened in my hand. Behind me, on the wind, I caught Heidi's laugh from the direction of the packhouse—bright, unbothered, already Luna in her own mouth.

I started walking.
